
Australia's clean energy industry has just survived a near-death experience. Where to from here?
A shift toward nuclear power and a significant expansion of gas electricity would have stalled renewable energy investment at the worst possible time, potentially derailing Australia's transition to a clean, modern energy system. This election was not just a political moment, it was a turning point.
This result might offer a much-needed shot in the arm for the clean energy sector, but this is no time for self-congratulation or complacency. Australia's energy transformation is happening in country towns and centres right around the nation with windfarms, solar projects, battery installations and the transmission lines that connect them being built in regional and rural communities. These communities have legitimate concerns. While the benefits from the jobs, investment, upgraded roads and bridges will come, they also bear the brunt of change. It is our responsibility as an industry to do better by them.

That begins with honesty. We must acknowledge that renewable energy companies have not always engaged regional communities as well as they should have. While these companies contribute hundreds of millions of dollars to local benefit schemes, pay landholders and neighbours, and partner with councils, we must go further. Token consultation is not enough. We need genuine, sustained, two-way relationships built on respect, transparency and trust. The vast majority of renewable energy companies already do this to the highest of standards, but there are those few that don't treat regional communities as they should.
The responsibility for the sector is creating local jobs, prioritising local businesses and exploring ownership models that give communities a meaningful stake in projects. It means engaging early and respectfully with First Nations peoples and being transparent about the impacts of renewable developments while ensuring benefits flow fairly to the people who host them.
This approach isn't just about fairness, it's essential to our success. Without social licence in the regions, the energy transition will slow down or fracture. With it, we can build a system that is not only cleaner and more reliable, but also more equitable.
The federal government has set an ambitious target of 82% renewable energy by 2030. Reaching that target will be challenging, but it's achievable. And now, with a clear political mandate, the investment community can proceed with renewed confidence. One important tool at the government's disposal is the capacity investment scheme, which helps de-risk projects and provide the certainty investors need to back renewable generation and storage. It's the bridge we need to transition smoothly as ageing coal-fired power stations exit the system.

To ensure a stable and reliable grid, energy storage must become a top infrastructure priority. Batteries are the unsung heroes, capturing surplus solar and wind energy when generation is high and releasing it when demand peaks. Australia is already a global leader in large-scale battery deployment, with flagship projects such as the Waratah Super Battery in the Hunter Valley and Tesla's Hornsdale Power Reserve in South Australia proving that batteries can maintain grid stability and prevent blackouts. But we need many more of them, and quickly, as well as longer duration storage technologies and pumped-hydro.
We must also learn from the experiences of other countries. In Spain and Portugal, underinvestment in storage and poor planning have led to grid instability and economic consequences. Australia cannot afford to make the same mistakes. Every additional megawatt of storage brings us closer to a zero-emissions energy system that is not only clean but dependable.
Australians have spoken with clarity. We want a renewable-powered future backed by storage and pumped-hydro and supported, when necessary, by gas. Nuclear power is too slow, too expensive, too divisive and that debate has been settled at the ballot box. Still, achieving our clean energy goals will take more than policy and investment. It requires humility from the sector, collaboration across all levels of government and a genuine commitment to partnering with regional Australia.
The mandate is clear. Now, we must rise to meet it.

Cornwall farmer urges consumers to pick high-quality fibres
For Caz Rimmer, from Cornwall, using natural wool is a way to cut down on plastic."A lot of cheap yarn is just acrylic," she said. "It sheds in the washing machine, it sheds when you are walking around, so you're literally putting microplastics into the environment."The rare breed sheep farmer is one producer trying to tap into what some in the industry have said is a resurgence in consumers seeking out eco-friendly and renewable materials. Bosses at the Natural Fibre Company, a woollen mill in Launceston, said they did business with more than 100 rare breed sheep farmers, as well as commercial flocks, to create a product mixing bobbin waste with natural wool fibres. Ms Rimmer, who has Wensleydale and Teeswater sheep, said she processes the fleeces at the Launceston mill and then hand dyes makers tend to use Wensleydale and Teeswater wool for their hair and it is also used for felting. "I wanted to do something with wool that was different," she said."There's a lot of people knitting and crocheting... but not everybody can knit and crochet." Ms Rimmer said the mill was "like having a sweet shop on the corner"."The key ethos of my business is nature and sustainability and sending wool up to Scotland is just madness when I've literally got one of the best mills in the country on my doorstep," she said."I've got a big kick against plastic it was really important to me that any yarns that I had spun didn't have any acrylic in it. "So all of our yarns are 100% natural fibre, which means you don't get the microplastic shedding."So it was a case of it needs to be 100% natural and biodegradable, and working with the mill they can achieve anything if you ask."Specialising in small batches, the mill blended Ms Rimmer's white fibre with bobbin waste that is a result of the processing of another farmer's wool. Katie Waller, a Falmouth University graduate who now works at the mill as an apprentice knitwear designer, said the process was "amazing". "I came to visit here on the national manufacturing day and I fell in love with the whole processing because it is so cool," she said."I get to experiment with so many different wools and different blends which I otherwise wouldn't be able to. "I either knit samples for customers who want to see what they can do with their yarn and I also design and knit things and make hand knitting patterns that people can purchase. "People are moving away from synthetic fibres and polyester and choosing natural fibres and adding to your fleece is what we can do here."

Labor reveals plan to deliver 1.2million new homes
Breaking ground on delivering 1.2million homes starts by untangling the maze of bureaucratic approvals, the federal government says. Housing Minister Clare O'Neil has signalled a second-term Labor administration will move quickly to boost construction. 'We've just been elected with a really clear mandate to improve our housing system in this country,' she told reporters on Saturday. 'We've got big reforms to implement, and not a day to waste in getting on with them.' The minister vowed to simplify local, state and federal planning regulations by leading a council of planning ministers. 'If we are going to address the housing needs of Australians, it is going to require the three levels of government to work together in new ways,' she said. She will work with the building sector to implement innovative technologies to move past time consuming and costly methods of construction. Her comments come after an interview with ABC on Friday where she said 'builders face a ridiculous thicket of red tape that is preventing them building the homes we need.' Master Builders Australia CEO Denita Wawn said the cost of building a home had skyrocketed by 40 per cent over the past five years while construction times had ballooned by 80 per cent over the past decade. 'It is critical that we remove the red tape that is hampering our capacity to build homes,' she said. Ms Wawn was hopeful the ambitious goal of 1.2million homes coming onto the market would be achieved, but said the group's projections showed there could be a slight drop-off. She argued that along with the focus on reducing red tape, there was an urgent need to apprenticeships and fast-tracking migration for skilled people. 'For the first time, the federal government is leaning in and trying to ensure that there is a focused attention on housing,' she said. But opposition housing spokesman Andrew Bragg said the government's plans were a 'joke' and described Labor as 'red tape champions.' 'Labor's signature housing policy, the Housing Australia Future Fund has built zero new homes in three years,' Senator Bragg said. 'Approvals are way down under their watch and their 1.2million new home target is a dead duck.' The Paris-based Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development warned Australia on Tuesday to boost housing supply and address falling affordability. The OECD said easing zoning restrictions would strengthen competition and productivity, as well as raise housing investment to 'reverse the long-standing decline in housing affordability'.
