Silver Finally Confirms Platinum's Take
Another day, another bearish confirmation.
And I don't even mean (not one but) two breakdown in silver that we see in today's pre-market trading.
Yes, this is bearish. Even if silver moves back up in a way later, the fact that silver moved below the support lines based on the intraday price extremes is already notable. Actually, a move back up (perhaps to the rising support line) before the slide continues wouldn't be surprising at all.
Yes, it is in perfect tune with the signals coming from the platinum.
And yes, it is particularly bearish given what's happening in the USD Index. But before I move to that, let's take a look at gold.
It broke down below its rising support line and continued to decline since that time. Right now, gold is below its late-May high, and with just a little more weakness, June will become a down month for gold.
While gold's and silver's breakdowns are important on their own, what makes them truly remarkable is that they both happened while the USD declined.
The USD Index corrected a bit today, which is quite normal as it encountered a strong, medium-term resistance. While I fully expect this resistance line to be broken given the significance of the recent buy signals (invalidations of breakdowns + the super-strong long-term support from which the USDX rallied), seeing a pullback right now is simply natural.
What is not natural is that both precious metals declined despite that.
Think about it: if gold failed to rally despite dramatic increase in tensions in the Middle East and a new military conflict in general AND despite the decline in the USD Index… Then what could possibly drive its price higher here?
Yes, there are some extreme cases like the financial system meltdown, introducing of a government-backed cryptocurrency that everyone would be forced to adopt instead of using anything else… But aside of those extreme cases, it looks like there's very little that can contribute to further rallies.
I mean, I saw many situations where gold and the rest of the precious metals market was weak throughout 20 years of my precious metals market analysis, but this… This is exceptional.
I wrote about how the platinum market confirms all this, and I'm going to add one more detail today: the price-volume link during the most recent price moves.
Volume peaked when platinum reversed about a week ago. That was the first top. The second top formed on declining and much weaker volume. This is how it looks like when buying power is drying up.
And now, when platinum is starting to decline, the volume is picking up again.
Now, please consider the following: the platinum market is tiny market compared to gold and silver. So, if the investment public entered the precious metals market, the impact was likely felt here in the most dramatic way. This is exactly what I think happened – and we saw the exact same thing at the 2008 top.
This is extremely important (and quite exciting) to see that during the second top in platinum, the volume actually declined. This is like the first crack in the dam. Perhaps in one of the most investment-public-saturated markets, the wave of buying is ending – the buyers get tired. The buying frenzy is over.
And as no new buyers are able to keep pushing the price higher, it can do only one thing – decline. To clarify, when there are no buyers or sellers, the price doesn't stay at the same level – it declines until buyers emerge.
So, as it seems that those that enter the market in the final parts of the rally are not only in the market, but that all of them already entered… It tells us that the rally is indeed over. Not just in this market, but in the entire precious metals complex, and perhaps in many other markets. The 2008 top in platinum wasn't an isolated signal just for PMs, was it?

Interactive Brokers' Stock Split: Time to Buy Shares?
A stock split does not change anything about the underlying business fundamentals of a stock, and yet, stock-split stocks tend to outperform over the 12 months following a split. This makes them interesting to pay attention to. One under-the-radar stock split that occurred this month is Interactive Brokers (NASDAQ: IBKR), performing a 4-to-1 split on its common shares. The technology-focused investing brokerage has grown users, revenue, and earnings at an impressive rate in the last 10 years, with customers drawn to its advanced trading platform. Does this make the stock a perfect buy for investors right now? Let's take a closer look at why Interactive Brokers is a winning stock to add to your portfolio. Comprehensive offering for the masses Interactive Brokers is an advanced trading platform that brings professional service to the masses. By enabling its customers to trade virtually any foreign market, currency, bonds, futures, and more, the brokerage has built up a better value proposition than traditional brokerages, even online-focused ones. It has an easy-to-use mobile application as well as more advanced trading tools, helping it cater to the more sophisticated individual investor as well as professional investors and hedge funds. It does all this at a reasonable price, including free stock trading on its IBKR Lite platform. This consistent focus on a wide swath of trading capabilities at a reasonable price has helped Interactive Brokers convince investors to switch to its brokerage platform. Back in 2012, Interactive Brokers only had 200,000 active customers, a minnow in the brokerage world. Today, it has 3.6 million customers that skew toward wealthier, advanced, and professional traders. This is a valuable set of customers with high lifetime values. To keep furthering its brokerage offering, Interactive Brokers is now offering more cryptocurrency trading and the fast-growing prediction marketplace, which allows users to bet on things such as the outcome of a country's election. The more types of trades you can make on Interactive Brokers, the more valuable it is for customers. This is why investors are switching from legacy players to Interactive Brokers. An impressive run of earnings growth Typically, fast-growing companies are not very profitable because of how much they need to spend on advertising, marketing, and technological development. Not Interactive Brokers. The company has built up a culture of efficiency and product-led growth combined with a highly automated brokerage platform that needs fewer employees to manage. Last quarter, Interactive Brokers had a pre-tax profit margin of 74%, which is one of the best profit margins of any company globally. The average profit margin for the S&P 500 index has ranged from 10% to 15%. Interactive Brokers has used this increasing operating leverage to put up impressive earnings growth in the last few years. Net income is up 400% in the last five years, hitting $793 million over the last 12 months. With only a small portion of investors using Interactive Brokers, the company has plenty of room to keep growing in the years to come; it is nowhere near one of the largest players in the brokerage market today. IBKR PE Ratio data by YCharts Should you buy IBKR stock? Investors who are backward-looking may think they have missed out on owning Interactive Brokers stock. It is up 67% in the last 12 months and just went through a stock split. I believe these investors are missing the forest for the trees. At today's stock price, Interactive Brokers trades at a price-to-earnings ratio (P/E) of 28. Most value investors would look at this high earnings ratio and scoff at investing in this company. However, we need to remember that Interactive Brokers has put up impressive levels of user, revenue, and earnings growth in the last five years and still has a long runway to keep stealing market share of brokerage customers. Its superior platform is not going to be replicated overnight, and it keeps improving its breadth of products and services every year. If Interactive Brokers can keep growing its earnings at a fast clip (which I think it can), the stock is a great buy after its recent stock split. Want to Invest in Quantum Computing? 2 Stocks That Are Great Buys Right Now.
Quantum computing will change the world someday. Next-generation systems will be able to do certain kinds of advanced math and pattern-matching much faster than today's digital chips. The quantum computing era will change everything you know about encryption and data security, but will also enable incredible innovation in fields such as medical research, weather forecasting, and economics. So the "quantum advantage" and "quantum supremacy" milestones are coming up, eventually making quantum systems incomparably more powerful for a very specific set of tasks. Problems involving large data sets and extremely precise calculations may look impossible now, but quantum computers may breeze through them quickly. It's a long journey, though. Investors recently got very excited about a couple of baby steps toward this future, sending a few quantum computing stocks sky-high in just a few months. As of June 23, early favorites IonQ (NYSE: IONQ) and D-Wave Quantum (NYSE: QBTS) have seen price gains of 471% and 1,188% over the last year, respectively. But I don't think these are the best bets on quantum computing in 2025. Many of the biggest names in Silicon Valley are funneling their massive resources into quantum research, and I'd much rather hitch my wagon to these innovative powerhouses instead. Alphabet and IBM are quantum's real power players My preferred quantum computing investments happen to be the engines behind the recent market uproar. Google parent Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOG)(NASDAQ: GOOGL) got the ball rolling with the Willow chip in December 2024. This small quantum computing processor features advanced error correction, which is an important function in the noisy and error-prone quantum computing process. As impressive as the Willow chip's performance was, it's just the second milestone on the 6-step road to quantum supremacy. Each step so far has taken several years. Just a couple of weeks ago, IBM (NYSE: IBM) announced the construction of a large quantum computer with its own set of powerful error correction features. Mind you, this system is more of a plan than a real-world project. IBM expects the Starling computer to be available in 2029. Deep pockets matter in this expensive research race Alphabet and IBM can invest billions of dollars in quantum computing research without breaking a sweat. As the largest company on the pure-play side of the quantum computing fence, IonQ has just $588 million of cash equivalents available. IonQ also burned more than $127 million of cash in 2024, and its cash pile won't last forever. It may sound crass, but this cash advantage gives IBM and Google a huge leg up on the smaller and deeply unprofitable competition. A single dead-end research project or management misstep could be enough to put the smaller organizations out of business, or at least make them easy targets for deep-discount buyouts. The tech giants don't work under the same sink-or-swim pressure. They can rely on an established portfolio of profitable business operations to get over any quantum computing setbacks. Meanwhile, they can enjoy success in unrelated business operations, like Google's online search and advertising or IBM's consulting services. Sleep easy with Alphabet and IBM Investing in D-Wave and IonQ is very risky in this early stage. Sure, they could evolve into solid sector leaders in due time, but they are also vulnerable to greater risks along the way. At the same time, IBM and Alphabet happen to trade at very reasonable valuation ratios right now. Picking these tech giants is not an act of high-wire acrobatics, but more like resting on fluffy blankets. And make no mistake -- IBM and Google are right on the leading edge of quantum computing research. What's not to love in this blend of investor safety and long-term growth opportunity? Long story short, the pure plays can be exciting but the real smart money is on the tech giants. Should you invest $1,000 in Alphabet right now? Before you buy stock in Alphabet, consider this: The Motley Fool Stock Advisor analyst team just identified what they believe are the 10 best stocks for investors to buy now… and Alphabet wasn't one of them. Why Alphabet Stock Crept Higher in Price on Wednesday
Like a robotaxi slowly advancing down a street to approach its destination, Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOG)(NASDAQ: GOOGL) stock advanced on Hump Day. Its two share classes both rose in excess of 2% in price during the trading session, on the back of good news for one of its businesses. That bump higher was good enough to beat the flat S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) on the day. New day, new city That Alphabet business posting the positive development was its accelerating robotaxi service, Waymo. On Tuesday, in partnership with ride-sharing incumbent Uber Technologies, the company rolled out Waymo in Atlanta. The Georgia metropolis now becomes the fifth metropolitan area serviced by Waymo (the others are San Francisco and the Bay Area, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and Austin). Alphabet doesn't plan on slamming the brakes on the project anytime soon, as it aims to Waymo Washington, D.C., and Miami next year. The combination of a widening footprint and positive word-of-mouth has boosted Waymo's popularity -- and its ridership. According to recent reporting from Barron's, these days the service is providing over 250,000 rides per week. That's more than double the 100,000 from last year at around this time. With the Atlanta launch, Alphabet extends its lead over ever-ambitious electric vehicle (EV) giant Tesla. That company launched its Robotaxi brand in Austin this past weekend; however, it was limited only to a select group of hand-picked users. A good Way(mo) forward Both Alphabet's development and rollout of Waymo feels as if they have been well planned and smoothly executed. In Los Angeles, for example, now it's common to see Waymos ferrying customers around the car-clogged city. While robotaxis aren't yet a massive business for Alphabet, they're looking like they'll become an important revenue generator sooner than many might expect Should you invest $1,000 in Alphabet right now?
