Major rockfall closes popular southwestern Colorado mountain road

CBS News03-03-2025

Ouray County authorities declared a disaster emergency last week after rockfall caused significant damage to Camp Bird Road.
Large boulders fell from directly above the road on Feb. 25 at a drainage just beyond Senator Gulch, according to the county. Photos show massive boulders completely blocking the roadway. Plus, significant damage can be seen to the retaining wall supporting the road where it crosses the drainage.
A smaller number of rocks which fell tumbled to the valley floor.
A mudslide damaged this same section of road in 2022. It was re-opened after a single day's work.
Also known as Ouray County 361, Camp Bird Road, a popular access for backcountry recreation, now "is not safe for any mode of travel, including foot traffic."
It has been temporarily closed to all access. The sheriff's office will enforce the closure and issue citations to violators, the county stated in a social media post.
Ouray County Road & Bridge workers first examined the damage the day after the rockfall occurred. The next day, on Jan. 27, the Road & Bridge superintendent met with county administration, legal counsel, emergency management, and the sheriff. The indefinite closure and emergency declaration were then put in place.
"After this latest analysis from Buckhorn," a Front Range-based structural engineering firm, the City of Ouray stated on social media, "it was determined essential to declare an emergency for this area, due to the severity of the damage and equipment necessary for full mitigation and repair."
"[A] certified professional geologist," the county countered, "alerted the County that the area is not safe and is considered life-threatening and more rockfall is likely, due to fluctuating cool and warm temperatures."
Camp Bird Road extends southwest from Ouray and into Yankee Boy Basin. It leads to camping, hiking and climbing areas, and is used by cyclists. It is also the opening stretch of road over Imogene Pass, a popular four-wheel-drive route between Ouray and Telluride during the summer.
Ouray officials have not established when repairs might begin, let alone when they could end.
The emergency declaration does put into motion the need for flexible coordination between Ouray first responders and those in neighboring counties with special resources. Any emergency calls in Yankee Boy Basin will likely see very extended response times.
That's because San Miguel County side of Imogene Pass was closed in August of last year, also due to rock fall. The closure was extended through the remainder of the summer four-wheeling season due to retaining wall damage. Getting that part of the road repaired and open for off-road travel this summer is "a very optimistic timeline," a USFS ranger told the Telluride Times last week.
The road to the Camp Bird Mine and the town of Gothic was built in 1879, according to the U.S. Forest Service. The mine and road were named after "the thieving Canada jays that were known to pilfered miners' lunches." The mine's gold lode was discovered in 1895. It soon became one of the state's top three gold mines. The mine, after decades of on-and-off production, was last closed in 1990.
Camp Bird Road is known as one of the more dangerous backcountry roads in Colorado. Three people on a Jeep tour were killed in 2022 when the vehicle fell from the route and rolled to the bottom of the canyon.

Flight passenger stands firm against entitled seat swapper's demands: ‘I'm not moving'

As summer travel kicks into high gear, the game of musical chairs in the sky shows no signs of slowing down as the seat-swapping trend continues. In the 'r/americanairlines' forum on Reddit, a user titled a post, 'Finally happened to me.' Advertisement The person wrote, 'Maybe I should stop reading about seat swappers … because it finally happened to me. Get in my 2A seat and I tell the woman, 'Hey, before you get settled, I'm at the window.' And she goes, 'Well, my husband and I are apart in separate aisle seats.'' The user continued in the post, 'I go, 'OK, well, I'm not moving, so I hope you figure it out.' She goes, 'Well, it's still business class.' No.' The Reddit poster added, 'To clear this up, I'm on an airbus 2×2. No middle. And it was my seat that I paid for. Moving to an aisle when I booked a window months ago is not the same … otherwise [I] would've obliged,' the flight passenger clarified. The post garnered over 1,000 reactions as people took to the comments section to discuss the issue and share their own encounters with seat swappers on board flights. Advertisement A traveler's Reddit post about seat swapping on airplanes kicked off a debate on the practice. kasto – 'I'm not at all for seat swapping. It's ridiculous,' wrote one user. Another user wrote, 'Returned recently from Munich and the lady across the aisle kept asking me to switch seats so she could sit next to her husband.' Advertisement Another person wrote, 'I mean, there's no harm in asking, but if the answer is 'No,' politely drop it and move on.' 'Unless a person has some sort of illness where their traveling partner needs immediate proximity, there's no point in this,' wrote one user. Many users addressed fellow flyers' need to be near their spouses or family members on planes. 'Why can't grown-ups just suck it up if they are not next to one another for a few hours?' commented one user. Advertisement A Redditor wrote that she and her spouse 'fly often, and sometimes we can't sit next to each other — big deal. We never ask someone to trade seats.' A user admitted, 'I am one of these seat swappers any time I travel with family. We reserve a row and the window and aisle seat … hoping no one gets the middle … If we happen to get a middle [seat]er, we ask them if it's OK if they get the window instead or aisle. Haven't had a complaint yet … Hoping it stays that way.' California-based etiquette expert Rosalinda Randall weighed in on the situation, telling Fox News Digital that 'no one has the obligation to switch their seat.' 'The person making the request has no right to expect [this] or make a scene when they don't get their way,' said Randall. Randall said there may be some circumstances in which it would be a minor inconvenience to switch. 'It's a short flight, you can find a similar seat in another row, or anyone would be an improvement from the passenger [you're currently] sitting next to,' said Randall.

New Portage Travel Club Allows Rural Students to Join School Trips

Students who have not previously been able to join international school trips now have the chance to travel abroad with the newly created Portage Travel Club. Portage Collegiate Institute teachers JoEllen Sevcenko and Laura McMaster have co-founded the new club, aimed at broadening students' horizons which will no longer be organized by the Portage la Prairie School Division. 'They're not approving international trips anymore,' said Sevcenko. 'Anything outside of Canada, we are going to take care of as a club now,' she said. There are still upcoming trips planned through the school division. PCI is offering two final international student trips: Amsterdam, London & Paris in 2026, and Japan in 2027. There's still space available for the Amsterdam trip, while Japan has now moved to a waitlist. Newly minted this month, the club's goal is to keep providing the opportunity for students to travel the globe—which will now include students from outside the division. 'Some of the smaller communities that haven't had a chance to travel will get to join us now,' said Sevcenko. Laura McMaster is a new French Immersion teacher at PCI, coming from Winnipeg about a year ago. She said she met Sevcenko during previous EF Tours trips, which was part of the reason she came to town. The club will still be working with EF Tours. 'We just believe too much in student travel and what it offers kids and I would say especially kids from a smaller town like Portage, to really get a chance to see the world and not to have just one perspective, multiple perspectives and different ways of living,' said McMaster. Trips are already planned and underway. McMaster will be in charge of French-language trips on odd-numbered years, while Sevcenko will be doing English-based travel on even-ended years. In 2027, students will have the chance to visit Paris, the Riveria and Rome, while in 2028, there is a 12-day Greece trip planned that includes a three-day cruise through the islands. The club will be holding their first information session at the Herman Prior Activity Centre on June 16 at 6:00 p.m. for all interested students and parents. They can RSVP here: The Plap Travel Club trips will still be fundraised, with the club doing Grocery Bucks. Sevcenko says the earlier a student registers for a trip, the more chance they have to raise funds or get a job, making it more affordable. 'If you enroll early enough, then the cost becomes much more manageable for most families. So there's been some sort of red tape stuff that slows things down. And that means the less time that people have to pay, the less inclusive travel is,' she said. 'So if you have two years, lots of kids that we work with can just get a job and pay it themselves with no trouble, plus the fundraising.' Trips are available for students in grades 9-12.
