United Airlines tech issue that impacted more than 1,000 flights resolved, residual delays expected

A disruption to a system housing United Airlines' flight information that caused more than 1,000 delays has been resolved, but delays continued into Thursday. The impacted system, called Unimatic, houses flight information that is fed to other systems including those that calculate weight and balance and track flight times, according to United. It's not clear what caused the problem, which was resolved late Wednesday. While residual delays were expected, United said its team was working to restore normal operations. About 35% of all the airline's flights were delayed and another 7% were canceled Wednesday, according to FlightAware, a website that tracks flight disruptions. By Thursday morning, 4% of United flights for the day were delayed and 4% were canceled. Tech issue grounds departing United Airlines flights nationwideAn alert on the Federal Aviation Administration website Wednesday said all United flights destined for Chicago were halted at their departing airports. Flights to United hubs at Denver, Newark, Houston and San Francisco airports also were affected. The airline's travel alert page noted that a technology disruption might impact flights to or from several U.S. airports from Thursday to Sunday including Denver, Newark, Washington, Houston, New York, Los Angeles, Orlando, Chicago, San Francisco, Honolulu and Guam and some in Europe, such as London, Frankfurt and Munich. 'Safety is our top priority, and we'll work with our customers to get them to their destinations,' an emailed statement from the Chicago-based airline said. The system outage, as the company described it, lasted several hours, the statement said. It wasn't related to recent concerns about airline industry cybersecurity. United said it was treating it as a controllable delay, meaning it paid customer expenses such as hotels when applicable. The FAA said in a statement Thursday that it was aware of the disruption to United operations, noting that delays may continue as the airline recovers. 'We've offered full support to help address their flight backlog and remain in close contact with United,' the FAA said. United Airlines apologized on social media and said in some cases it would pay for hotel and other expenses incurred by travelers because of the delays. 'Hey there, we apologize for the travel disruption today,' the airline told a customer on the social platform X. 'Our teams are working to resolve the outage as quickly as possible. Thank you for your patience.'

Dusit signs hotel management agreement with Al Ghadeer Group

Thailand-based hotel and property development company Dusit International has entered a hotel management agreement for the new upper-upscale resort dusitD2 Al Ahsa in Saudi Arabia. The agreement was signed with Al Ghadeer Group in the presence of Saud bin Talal bin Badr Al Saud, Governor of Al Ahsa. The resort, designed by Cairo-based El Ghoneimi Architects, is inspired by the desert, nearby mountains, and the palm trees that characterise Al Ahsa Oasis. Located in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Al Ahsa Oasis in the eastern Arabian Peninsula, the property will feature 120 suites with one to three-bedroom configurations, each offering a private terrace and plunge pool. Guests at dusitD2 Al Ahsa will have access to a variety of facilities, encompassing a wellness centre, a 1,500m² ballroom, and outdoor event spaces. The resort will also offer meeting rooms, dining options, an outdoor swimming pool, and a dedicated kids' club. Dusit International chief operating officer Gilles Cretallaz said: 'This important signing reflects our strategic commitment to bringing Dusit's unique brand of Thai-inspired, gracious hospitality to key destinations worldwide and our dedication to delivering sustainable value for the communities we serve. 'We are delighted to partner with Al Ghadeer Group to create a destination that celebrates Al Ahsa's rich heritage and natural beauty while offering exceptional comfort, modern luxury, responsible design, and memorable experiences for guests of all ages.' dusitD2 Al Ahsa is scheduled to open in 2027. It is part of Dusit International's expansion in the Middle East, where it operates nine properties and has plans for further growth. This resort is the second Dusit-branded property in Saudi Arabia, following Dusit Princess Al Majma'ah in Riyadh, which is set to open in the fourth quarter of this year. Last month, Dusit International expanded its global footprint by entering a property management agreement with King Square Development. The next leg of the fastest transatlantic ocean liner's journey is underway

FacebookTweetLink From anchors aweigh to funnels ashore. As the historic SS United States gets ready to be converted into the world's largest artificial reef off the coast of Florida, a new plan for an accompanying museum is coming into focus — preserving its iconic massive funnels. The two six-story-high towering funnels will soon be removed from America's flagship, to be used as a 'dramatic centerpiece' of the SS United States Museum and Visitor Experience, according to an announcement this week by the SS United States Conservancy Board. 'By incorporating iconic components from the historic ocean liner into an architecturally stunning land-based museum, the SS United States will continue to excite and inspire future generations,' said Susan Gibbs, president of the conservancy. The SS United States — nearly as large as the Chrysler Building — is an American maritime icon, which launched in 1951 and set the transatlantic speed record the following year. But after spending nearly three decades sitting dormant in Philadelphia, the ship was sold to Okaloosa County in Florida, to be sunk and turned into an artificial reef. While fans and supporters of the 'Big U' were hoping for a different outcome, the SS United States Conservancy felt this was the best option to prevent her from being scrapped. And the eventual sinking came with the promise of a museum to commemorate the American legend. The conservancy announced on Monday that museum design firm Thinc Design has agreed to take on the project. 'In close collaboration with the Conservancy, we look forward to designing dynamic, interactive exhibits that create an unforgettable experience for all visitors,' said Tom Hennes, founder of Thinc Design. The future museum — whose conceptual renderings prominently feature the massive funnels and a dock extending into the nearby bay — will also hold 'artwork, artifacts, vintage photographs, and film footage' from and of the ship, the announcement said. Currently, the ocean liner is still in Mobile, Alabama, preparing to be sunk. A representative for the conservancy told CNN that Okaloosa County is estimating the final sink could happen by the end of the year or early 2026. The museum would be located in Destin/Ft. Walton Beach, about 20 miles north of the ship's resting place. While longtime fans of the ship are still mourning the loss of the SS United States to the bottom of the ocean, some were happy with the new museum design update. 'I like the idea that both funnels would be used,' commented one fan on the conservancy's Facebook page. 'The gutted hull will give back (to) the ocean it once sailed and much of the interior and top of the ship will be preserved for history.'
