Japan's June household spending rises but slower than expected

Business Times3 days ago
[TOKYO] Japanese household spending in June rose 1.3 per cent from a year earlier, internal affairs ministry data showed on Friday, short of the median market forecast for a 2.6 per cent rise.
On a seasonally adjusted, month-on-month basis, spending decreased 5.2 per cent, versus an estimated 3 per cent fall.
Consumption and wage trends are among key factors the Bank of Japan is monitoring to determine the timing of the next rate hike.
Japan's real wages fell in June for a sixth consecutive month as inflation continued to outpace pay growth, data released on Wednesday showed, raising concerns about consumption-led recovery in the world's fourth-largest economy.
The government on Thursday cut its growth forecast for this fiscal year as US tariffs slow capital expenditure and persistent inflation weighs on private consumption. REUTERS

India estimates about 55% of goods exported to US will face Trump tariff

[MUMBAI] About 55 per cent of India's merchandise exports to the United States will be subject to the tariff imposed by President Donald Trump's administration, the Indian government said on Monday (Aug 11). Last week, Trump imposed an additional 25 per cent tariff on Indian goods as punishment for Delhi's purchases of Russian oil. That raised the total duty on Indian exports to the US to 50 per cent – among the highest on any American trading partner. The Indian government had taken into account the 25 per cent tariff that Trump initially imposed on goods while providing Monday's estimate, Pankaj Chaudhary, India's junior finance minister, said in a written response to a question from a lawmaker. 'The Department of Commerce is engaged with all stakeholders including exporters and industry for taking feedback of their assessment of the situation,' Chaudhary added. Goods trade between the United States and India – the world's biggest and fifth-largest economies respectively – was worth about US$87 billion in the last fiscal year, according to Indian government estimates. Malaysia's Petronas to boost international portfolio to 60% over next decade

[KUALA LUMPUR] Malaysia's state energy firm Petronas plans to raise the share of its international portfolio to 60 per cent of its total business over the next decade, it said on Monday (Aug 11). The firm will build on its current international portfolio, which now accounts for around 40 to 50 per cent of its investments, by integrating its domestic expertise with global partnerships, it said in a fact sheet shared with Reuters. In a volatile market, Petronas is upgrading its upstream operation portfolio to focus on high-quality assets while at the same time ensuring that energy supplies for Malaysia remain reliable, the company added. 'Malaysia remains a core part of our investment portfolio, and we are committed to this market,' executive vice-president and chief executive officer of upstream business Mohd Jukris Abdul Wahab said in the fact sheet. Malaysian state news agency Bernama reported that Mohd Jukris saying Petronas would review its operations including maintenance, field operations and others in order to mitigate the impact of lower crude oil prices. Crude oil prices are currently trading at US$66.68 per barrel as of 1006 GMT. He added that Petronas is also considering expanding its presence in Canada, given that the country has now become one of its major liquefied natural gas suppliers, Bernama reported. In July, Petronas delivered its first LNG Canada cargo to Japan from its newly operational LNG facility in Kitimat. Petronas has a 25 per cent stake in the Kitimat LNG plant in British Columbia on Canada's west coast. REUTERS

Indonesia eyes ‘sovereign AI fund' to drive development, document shows

[JAKARTA] Authorities overseeing the development of artificial intelligence in Indonesia have proposed a 'sovereign AI fund' to finance the archipelago's ambitions to become a regional hub for the fast-growing technology, a government document showed. Last month, Reuters reported that South-east Asia's largest economy would release its first national roadmap on AI in a bid to attract foreign investment as it looks to join the global AI and chip-making race. The race has seen neighbouring Malaysia secure billions of US dollars from global tech firms seeking to build critical infrastructure to meet growing demand for cloud and AI services. The Indonesia strategy, released in the form of a 179-page white paper seen by Reuters, recommends, among other things, a sovereign AI fund mainly handled by the country's new sovereign wealth fund Danantara Indonesia, which controls over US$900 billion in assets. Danantara Indonesia did not immediately reply to a request for comment. The paper did not specify the amount that would be needed, but estimated a 2027 to 2029 timeline to set up the fund, and a public-private model to finance Indonesia's AI push. It also suggests increasing fiscal incentives for domestic investors in AI, without providing details. 'Indonesia right now is in the early stages of AI adoption,' the document reads. Industry players including Chinese giant Huawei and Indonesia's biggest technology company GoTo contributed to the report. An April report by the Boston Consulting Group said Asean nations were positioned for substantial AI-driven gains, with GDP contributions ranging from 2.3 to 3.1 per cent by 2027, and Indonesia could see the highest impact in terms of absolute gross domestic output growth. The roadmap also details challenges for Indonesia including a lack of talent, low research funding, uneven connectivity outside big cities, risks of misinformation and data leaks. Global tech companies have courted the AI drive in Indonesia, including Nvidia and Microsoft. REUTERS
