But Boyd again had to be content with a place among the substitutes before he was summoned into action early in the second half in Drumcondra.
Within two minutes of coming on, he had gotten the better of two opponents to set up Mipo Odubeko for the only goal of the first leg at Tolka Park.
And O'Brien said: 'I'm sure of it, I know he was really disappointed, it was a really hard team to pick, because everyone wants to play in this game. Like, as young players, that's what it's about, playing Champions League football.

'I said that before the game, not many players get that opportunity, and I had to break a few of their hearts I suppose, by not playing them.
'So I'm sure he was one of them that was really disappointed, but listen, that sums him up.
'I suppose he was a person, and the relationship that I have with him, to be able to put it aside and put the team ahead of himself, and to go out and perform the way he did. He's a brilliant player in this league.
'I was delighted with his impact and I suppose on another night he probably would have scored another one himself.

'As I said to them before, it's about the squad for me. We have a super squad. Sometimes lads are going to get disappointed but they all have to be ready.
'We made five subs. Next week, we'll be making five subs again. It's a squad game. Over the next few days, training is going to be really good because they're all going to be wanting to play next week.

'That competition, to try to get into that team next week, will keep all the lads tuned in.'
O'Brien was also chuffed with Odubeko who scored for the third game running, having netted just five times in his previous 23 appearances.

The boss said: 'He's been brilliant the last few weeks. He's caused serious problems to teams. I think he's on a nice little run there with goals and all that.
'His overall play I thought was very good. It was difficult for him in the first half just with how deep they were defending.
'For that second half, he came out well and linked with Seán then going up to him. They're up there, sometimes one, two people are looking after Seán and then it creates one-v-ones with him. I thought he was brilliant.'
SUBBED OFF?
But Odubeko admitted he thought his night might have been over when he saw Boyd limbering up.

He said: 'I was thinking that, to be fair. The two up front works well. We've a good relationship, a great understanding of each other, both on and off the pitch. That does help. Credit to him.
'He's sort of like a big brother figure for me. When we're on the pitch together we work really well. I was happy to see him come on. He did the right thing and I scored. I'm happy for me but also him.'
For O'Brien, there was relief that the focus was on players before with the spotlight having been on
The former Ireland, West Ham and Shamrock Rovers player, 39, said: 'There's been so much talk about this football club over the last few weeks, about myself, the manager leaving, all that sort of stuff. I wanted the focus to be on them.

'I said to them, 'At 7.45pm, make sure you're ready to rock, go out and do your talking out on the pitch. There's too much noise around this football club. Let's show everyone how good of players we are'. And I thought they did that.'

Shelbourne hit the summit after comeback win over Waterford

Shelbourne recovered from a first-half scare to go top of the SSE Airtricity Women's Premier Division thanks to a 2-1 win over Waterford at Tolka Park this afternoon. The Reds came into the game buoyed by title rivals Athlone Town dropping points yesterday away to Bohemians and knew victory in Drumcondra would move them to the summit. However, the Blues caused a major surprise as a superb Fiana Bradley strike gave the visitors the lead on 17 minutes. The lead did not last much longer as Jessica Gargan headed into the net from close range in the 47th minute. Alex Kavanagh then struck on the hour mark to put the home side in front. Shels saw out the rest of the game to claim three points, with Waterford not troubling their goal. Eoin Wearen's side will be in FAI Cup action against Shamrock Rovers next Friday, while there is a colossal game to come in the league against Athlone in the title race in a fortnight.

Calvert-Lewin ditches agent in bid to seal dream transfer after Man Utd snub

Former Everton forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin has dismissed his agent and will now take charge of his own transfer negotiations as he seeks a new club, with Manchester United being his ultimate aim. The 28 year old is currently without a club after his contract with the Toffees expired and he's on the hunt for his next venture, ideally at Old Trafford. Despite struggling to find the back of the net last season, Calvert-Lewin has previously shown his goal-scoring prowess, although injuries have hampered his career. Many thought that his past performances would attract a flurry of offers, particularly as he's been associated with United and Newcastle before, but no offers have materialised yet. The England international, who won 11 caps for his country, is ready to take his destiny into his own hands, reports The Sun, with his next move yet to be decided. Calvert-Lewin was once linked with a £50million switch to Manchester, but that never materialised. Ruben Amorim has just spent big on Benjamin Sesko, signing the striker from RB Leipzig, and it remains to be seen if there's any appetite to bring in more firepower. It has been reported that Aston Villa would be keen on the ex-Everton man whilst Premier League new boys Sunderland are also interested in him. Calvert-Lewin came through the ranks at Sheffield United but it has been sometime since he consistently hit his best level. From 2019 to 2021 the striker scored 36 times - including his single-season best haul of 21 when Carlo Ancelotti was in charge. One of those goals included a 95th minute equaliser for Everton during a 3-3 draw against United at Old Trafford. The striker was once the deputy to Harry Kane with England and was pushing for more involvement, but his career has dipped. However he has made it clear previously that he has lofty ambitions which he believes are still attainable. "The main thing for me is I want to win, I want to be in a winning environment," he said after leaving Everton. After the last three or four seasons it has been about survival. When I started my career I wanted to play in the Premier League, play for England a go to major tournaments with England and play in the Champions League. "I have played in a major tournament for England, I have played in the Premier League, but I haven't played in the Champions League. There are still things I would like to achieve before my time is done."

"No quick fix" declares Russell Martin after Rangers limp to consecutive draw

Russell Martin warned disheartened Rangers supporters that there is "no quick fix" after his team surrendered another two points in the William Hill Premiership title chase with a 1-1 home stalemate against Dundee. The Gers manager was displeased following the 1-1 stalemate in their league curtain-raiser at Motherwell the previous week and his squad answered with a 3-0 triumph over Viktoria Plzen in the opening leg of their Champions League qualifier on Tuesday evening. Nevertheless, the tension amongst the supporters resurfaced against Steven Pressley's outfit, who grabbed the advantage in the 51st minute via a Ryan Astley header. Gers defender Nasser Djiga was sent off for a last-man challenge on Finlay Robertson but as the game moved into added time Rangers captain James Tavernier, who came off the bench, levelled from the spot, after Drey Wright pulled down Djeidi Gassama. To add to the consternation amid the Light Blues support, Cyriel Dessers had the ball in the net in the seventh minute of added time only to be ruled offside. Martin said: 'Every club I have been at, it's a bit of pain and when you get through that pain, it's so worth it. I don't think I expected anything less coming here, it's not going to be a quick fix. 'This club has not had success for a long, long time. I've been asked about the supporters' reaction and I just don't have a problem because I understand it. 'We are at a point now at this club where something needed to change. 'The ownership has changed, there's a new coaching staff, there's new players, there's hopefully a new way of behaving in the training ground – properly, every single day, regarding standards and what's expected at this football club. So it's not a quick fix and this is not me coming out and making excuses. 'I think we change the manager from year to year and nothing really changes. 'So now it's about really changing the culture and the feel of the club day in and day out. That will end up in a good outcome. Good process, good people, will always end up in a good outcome. But maybe not so quickly as everyone wants.' Martin admitted he was surprised at the boos which rang round the stadium when he brought on Kieran Dowell, along with Nicolas Raskin, to replace Lyall Cameron and Mohamed Diomande. He said: 'Yeah, that surprised me. I'm not on any social media or anything like that, so I don't really know what the narrative is around Kieran. 'I don't think it helps him, I don't think it helps the rest of the guys. That's how I feel about it really. 'I'm disappointed for Kieran, because what we've seen at the training ground and I speak to everyone there, he's really valued as a person and a character. And he's played out of position for us for three games, so today he actually played a bit more in his position, played forward, I thought he was good with the ball, he ran really hard for the team.' If Rangers get through their Euro tie against Plzen they will postpone the league match against St Mirren on August 24 to prepare for the play-off tie which means Djiga will miss the Old Firm game against Celtic at Ibrox the following week. Dundee boss Steven Pressley 'could have cried' for his players after coming so close to an historic win. He said: 'I went on record all week talking about the perfect performance, the club haven't picked up a point here since 2001. 'So we needed an incredible performance, we needed luck, and I think the players delivered that, they were exceptional. 'I said to them in the dressing room I could have cried for them at the end. 'They left every last ounce out on the pitch, they showed the courage that I spoke about, so, of course, exceptionally proud. 'But we're under no illusions, there's a lot, a lot of hard work ahead of us, one point in this league gets you relegated, so there's so much hard work ahead.'
