A British Columbia ostrich farm is under federal pressure to cull hundreds of ostrich birds after a rare and concerning strain of avian influenza was found, one not seen elsewhere in Canada. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) announced Friday(May 30) that Universal Ostrich Farms in Edgewood has been fined $20,000 for failing to cooperate with containment measures, including ignoring quarantine orders and not reporting bird deaths during an earlier outbreak. The CFIA confirmed that the virus on the farm is a mutation of H5N1 that includes a genotype linked to a human case in an Ohio poultry worker. It warned that the situation poses a serious risk to both animal and public health. The agency said the farm failed to implement standard biosecurity controls, such as keeping wild birds out, containing water flow between quarantine zones, and securing fencing, actions the CFIA says 'significantly increase the risk of disease transmission.'The farm lost 69 ostriches between December and January due to the outbreak, and around 400 birds remain.Farm owners say the surviving birds have shown signs of herd immunity and could be valuable for scientific research. However, the CFIA said, 'CFIA has not received any evidence of scientific research being done at the infected premises.' It added that the farm's facilities are not suitable for controlled studies and that no research documentation was provided during the owners' request for exemption or court hearings.US Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. wrote to the CFIA's president last week, calling for the birds to be spared for joint research. Dr. Mehmet Oz, now administrator of the US Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, also supported preserving the flock and offered to relocate the birds to his Florida ranch. But the CFIA rejected these proposals.A Federal Court judge ruled on May 13 that the cull could proceed. The farm has appealed the decision, but has not been granted a stay. Protesters have been at the site for weeks, with more arriving Friday in a convoy, according to social media footage. The CFIA confirmed plans for 'humane depopulation with veterinary oversight' are moving forward. It said ongoing delays are 'resulting in ongoing health risks to animals and humans.'The discovery of this mutated strain comes as global health authorities monitor a troubling rise in avian influenza cases. In recent years, the H5N1 virus has been detected in mammals, including sea lions, bears, and even house pets, raising fears of potential transmission to humans. While human cases remain rare, experts warn that mutations like the one found in Edgewood could signal evolving risks to public health.

Alerts issued as more than 200,000 people in these US states told to stay indoors amid heightened risks
US states issue air quality alert Live Events (You can now subscribe to our (You can now subscribe to our Economic Times WhatsApp channel Three US states Michigan, Minnesota and South Carolina have asked people to stay indoors as air quality alerts were in effect across them on Monday morning, reports NewsWeek. Health officials said that vulnerable populations—such as children, older adults and individuals with existing respiratory issues—face heightened risks during periods of poor air matter from wildfire smoke can worsen asthma, trigger heart problems, and lower lung function in developing children, reports said. In Michigan and Minnesota, smoke from Canadian wildfires remains a major cause of concern. The National Weather Service (NWS) said smoke from fires in Manitoba and Saskatchewan is spreading south due to a cold counties affected included Mackinac, Chippewa, Menominee, Keweenaw, Dickinson, Iron, Marquette, Baraga, Schoolcraft, Houghton, Delta, Ontonagon, Gogebic, Luce and Alger, NewsWeek report said."It is recommended that, when possible, you avoid strenuous outdoor activities, especially those with heart disease and respiratory diseases such as asthma," read the entirety of Minnesota was also under air quality alert. People are being advised to avoid outdoor activity, especially strenuous exercise, stay indoors with windows closed, use air purifiers if available and avoid outdoor burning and other pollution-causing activities."A cold front will continue to drag smoke from large wildfires in Manitoba and Saskatchewan southward into Minnesota. This will be a long duration event with multiple rounds of smoke expected," read the air quality alert for an air quality alert had been issued for Catawba and Upstate regions of South Carolina. The alert said that weather conditions were expected to cause high ozone pollution levels."This has been further compounded by higher than projected ozone readings from over the weekend and an influence from interactions with the Canadian wildfire smoke that has poured across the Plains and Southeast," it of pediatric respiratory and environmental medicine Jonathan Grigg, with Queen Mary University of London, previously told Newsweek: "There are vulnerable groups and classically they are children because they've got an extra issue to do with their lungs developing, whereas our lungs are not developing as adults."Their trajectory can be deviated so they don't actually achieve their maximum lung function."There are also "very clear links" between inhaling particles and earlier death from both respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, Grigg Grigg said conditions such as asthma are also exacerbated by exposure to air May, when Florida's air turned toxic, more than 50,000 residents were warned to hunker down indoors as dangerous pollution levels warned it could cause coughing, breathing problems and exacerbate any chronic heart or lung conditions in sensitive groups, with older adults at risk because their bodies are less able to compensate for environmental hazards. According to the EPA, the orange AQI level (101–150) marks the point at which outdoor air becomes a threat to anyone with asthma, heart conditions, or other respiratory illnesses. Symptoms like coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, and even chest pain can appear or intensify - and for some, may require emergency medical intervention.

Forget ozempic, this natural fibre mimics its effects, aiding dramatic weight loss and blood sugar control, say experts
Fibre's comeback moment What's so special about beta-glucan? Live Events More than just weight loss Foods that are rich in beta-glucan Oats Barley Sorghum Rye Maize (corn) Triticale (a wheat-rye hybrid) Wheat and durum wheat Rice Mushrooms Seaweed (You can now subscribe to our (You can now subscribe to our Economic Times WhatsApp channel We've all heard about Ozempic , the diabetes drug that's become popular for its strong weight loss effects. But what if a simple, natural ingredient like fibre could do something similar? That's what a new study from the University of Arizona and the University of Vienna suggests. Researchers have found that beta-glucan , a special type of fibre found in oats and barley, may help with weight loss and blood sugar control , just like Ozempic, but without any a long time, fibre wasn't the star of the nutrition world. People mostly focused on carbs and protein. But now, fibre is making a comeback, especially as we learn more about how it helps our gut and overall gut is home to trillions of tiny bacteria, known as the gut microbiome . These bacteria love fibre. In return, they help us digest food, fight off illness, and even manage weight. In the new 2024 study, scientists gave different types of fibre to mice who were on a high-fat diet . Only one type worked for weight loss: is a soluble fibre. That means it dissolves in water and can be easily used by gut bacteria. You can find it in common whole grains like oats and the study, mice that ate beta-glucan didn't eat less food, but they still lost weight and fat. Their metabolism changed. One of the biggest changes was an increase in a helpful gut bacterium called Ileibacterium, which other studies have also linked to weight key change was the production of a chemical called butyrate. This is made when gut bacteria digest fibre. Butyrate helps your body release GLP-1, a hormone that reduces hunger. Ozempic works by mimicking this same hormone. So in simple terms, beta-glucan might help your body make more of this hormone doesn't just help with weight. It also protects the lining of your gut, supports the liver, and may lower inflammation. Scientists say we still have a lot to learn, but the early signs are said, remember: this research was done in mice. We still need more studies in humans to be sure it works the same beta-glucan to your diet is easy. Here are some foods that naturally contain it:These foods slow down digestion, which keeps you full for longer and helps your body manage blood sugar from TOI
