Missing college student found dead in retention pond after crash, Virginia cops say
A college student was found dead in a retention pond three days after he was reported missing following a car crash, police said.
Authorities confirmed the identity of a body found June 10 in a retention pond to be 19-year-old Kyle Coleman, the Fairfax County Police Department said in a June 11 news release.
Detectives on June 9 linked Coleman — a rising sophomore at Morehouse College in Georgia, according to a Facebook post by the school — to a June 6 car crash after he was reported missing the next day, police said.
Officers responded to the crash at about 11:15 p.m. in Tysons after receiving an emergency activation call from an iPhone, police said.
A blue Toyota Yaris that was headed west crossed into eastbound lanes, then went off the road and hit a tree, according to police, who said they found the crashed vehicle empty.
Witnesses told officers they saw a person leave the vehicle after the crash, but occupants of the car or evidence of foul play was not found during an initial search of the area, police said.
Coleman's body was found days later 'submerged in a nearby retention pond surrounded by thick brush,' according to police.
Detectives are investigating the circumstances of Coleman's death, police said.
Tysons is about a 15-mile drive west from Washington, D.C.
Community mourns 'college kid full of promise'
LeLe Jones, who said Coleman was her son's best friend and came over on the weekends for pancakes, remembered him as 'a college kid full of promise' in a June 11 Facebook post.
'He is the kid who opened his Bible app before bedtime no matter where he was because that's who his mama and daddy raised,' Jones said.
Coleman was involved in several campus organizations while majoring in business administration with a finance concentration, school officials said in a June 11 statement on Facebook.
'Our entire Morehouse family grieves this unimaginable loss. Kyle was known for his warmth, humility, and peaceful spirit,' officials said. 'May we honor Kyle's life by holding tightly to community, ambition, and peace.'

Australian Olympic dressage rider suspended after video appears to show him repeatedly whipping horse
An Australian dressage rider has been provisionally suspended and will be investigated, according to Equestrian Australia (EA), after a video emerged on social media that appears to show him repeatedly whipping a horse. Heath Ryan, who represented Australia in dressage at the 2008 Olympics, can be seen in the video – which the rider said is about two years old – hitting a horse around 40 times. Ryan said in a lengthy Facebook post defending the incident that everything in the video 'transpired sincerely with the (horse's) best interests the sole consideration.' CNN Sports has reached out to Ryan for comment. EA said the provisional suspension will last until 'a thorough investigation of this matter' has been completed, adding that it had also received a formal complaint about the incident. 'Equestrian Australia is extremely alarmed and concerned by the treatment of the horse shown in this footage,' the governing body said in a statement. 'Equestrian Australia has this afternoon imposed a provisional suspension of this person's membership of Equestrian Australia and their rights, privileges and benefits associated with their membership.' EA said it 'takes matters of animal welfare very seriously.' In his Facebook post, the 66-year-old equestrian rider said the horse was brought to him on the way to the 'knackery,' where animals go to be killed, after a riding accident had left his owner in intensive care. Ryan described the horse, Nico, as a 'problem child' that got 'worse and worse until the accident.' 'I felt obliged to the horse to just have a look and see if it was possibly salvageable,' Ryan wrote on Facebook. 'Well did I get a shock and so the video. I have never ridden anything like it. I am so sad this was caught on video. 'If I had been thinking of myself I would have immediately just gotten off and sent Nico to the knackery. That video was a life or death moment for Nico and of that I was very aware. 'I felt I genuinely had to try my very hardest to see if Nico would consider other options. Anyway by the end of that initial ride I did feel Nico was responding. I rode Nico for another couple of days and he responded very well and started to go without the use of excessive driving aids.' Alongside his statement, Ryan posted a new video, which he described as Nico 'thriving in a loving and competitive home with an exciting future.' Ryan said the video which prompted the EA suspension was posted by an 'unhappy ex employee.' 'All I can say is that this awful video was collateral damage of me from the bottom of my heart launching a rescue mission,' Ryan added.

3rd suspect in connection with Mass. teen's stabbing death fled the country, DA says
A second man facing charges in connection with the stabbing death of a Chelsea high schooler has fled the country, Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden's office said. Ezer Lenin Ramirez-Maldonado, 18, of East Boston, faces counts of murder, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and assault with intent to murder, Hayden's office said in a statement. No other information about Ramirez-Maldonado's whereabouts was shared. Ramirez-Maldonado is one of three people charged in connection with the stabbing death of Juan Carlos Lemus, 17. Chelsea and State Police learned of a double stabbing on Eastern Avenue around 8:45 p.m. on March 8, Hayden's office said previously. A 15-year-old boy was also stabbed during the incident, but he survived. On Thursday afternoon, Brayan Alfredo Lopez-Padilla, 26, of Chelsea, appeared in Suffolk Superior Court, Hayden's office said. He was charged with murder, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and assault with intent to murder. Lopez-Padilla is expected to return to court for a pretrial hearing on July 10. A 17-year-old boy suspected of the high schooler's death was also not arraigned on Thursday because of a "defense attorney work stoppage," Hayden's office said. The teenager was held overnight and is expected to appear in Boston Juvenile Court on Friday. Lemus's friends and family remember the Chelsea High School student as a 'cherished young soul' who loved hip-hop, video games and Burger King. He was a member of Ministerio Monte De Sion Church in Chelsea and aspired to read the Bible cover to cover. No further information about the double stabbing — including the relationship between Lopez-Padilla and Lemus or a motive — has been released. Fact Check: AI-generated image shows Trump on Epstein's jet with underage girls
Claim: A photo shared online authentically depicts U.S. President Donald Trump on an airplane with underage girls. Rating: An image being shared online in June 2025 purported to depict U.S. President Donald Trump on board an airplane surrounded by five young blonde girls. Many users sharing the alleged photograph pointed out the girls are underage, with others ruminating how their looks are reminiscent of Trump's daughter Ivanka. The image was shared widely on X (archived, archived, archived), Threads (archived), Facebook (archived) and TikTok (archived), with some of the posts (archived) further alleging that the airplane in question belonged to disgraced financier and accused sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein (now deceased). The image shared online purporting to show Donald Trump alongside underage girls, allegedly on Epstein's private jet, is fake. While there are authentic images of Trump alongside Epstein, plenty of false images have spread widely on the internet, including other fake photos of Trump with underage girls. The specific image in question has been shared online since at least 2023. It appeared in posts on meme websites Imgur and 9GAG in April 2023 before spreading to social media. In January 2024, Hollywood actor Mark Ruffalo even apologized for sharing fake images of Trump with underage girls, including the one in question. The actor wrote, "Sorry Folks. Apparently these images are AI fakes. The fact Trump was on Epstein's plane and what Epstein was up to is not." Indeed, the photograph was generated with artificial intelligence (AI). The AI-detection tool Hive Moderation reported a 99.8% chance the image was made using AI and was thoroughly debunked when it originally circulated. While the image was debunked during its original circulation, Trump's public feud with Elon Musk, who posted on social media that Trump appeared in Epstein's files in June 2025, brought the image back to prominence and is likely to blame for the proliferation of new claims. Snopes previously debunked fake images of Trump and Epstein with a minor as well as Trump and Epstein together on a private jet, though there have been authentic images of the pair together.
