The Hindu25-04-2025

A Detailed Project Report (DPR) is being prepared for the proposed construction of a road overbridge across railway level crossings situated between Solagampatti and Tiruverumbur along the Tiruchi - Thanjavur broad gauge section.
This was conveyed through a written response by the Southern Railway authorities to a plea from Tiruchi Lok Sabha MP Durai Vaiko during the Southern Railway General Manager's recent meeting with the MPs of Tiruchi Division. Mr. Durai Vaiko had raised a host of railway related issues pertaining to his Parliamentary constituency at the meeting seeking their implementation.
One of the pleas by Mr. Durai Vaiko was to construct a road overbridge in lieu of a level crossing gate at Melakumaresapuram in Tiruverumbur on the outskirts of Tiruchi. The level crossing gate is situated between Solagampatti and Tiruverumbur along the Tiruchi - Thanjavur BG section.
In its written response to the MP's request, the Southern Railway authorities stated that the level crossing had recorded a TVU (Train Vehicle Unit) of 1,27,325 during a census conducted in July 2024. Following representation from the MP on various occasions, a survey was conducted. 'The Detailed Project Report for the proposed construction of a road overbridge is currently under preparation'.
In response to another request from Mr. Durai Vaiko for the construction of a road overbridge in lieu of a level crossing in Inamkulathur area in Manikandam panchayat union to avoid traffic congestion, the railway authorities said the TVU (Train Vehicle Unit) of the level crossing situated along the Tiruchi - Dindigul broad gauge section was 1,62,208 as on April 2024. 'The feasibility for the construction of a road overbridge will be explored'.
At the meeting, Mr. Durai Vaiko sought the halt of the Chennai Egmore - Tiruchi - Chennai Egmore Cholan superfast express trains at Tiruverumbur station. The railway authorities replied that halt of the Cholan express at Tiruverumbur had been recommended to the Railway Board, New Delhi as powers for provision of halt comes under its purview.

Not Abhishek's only Mamata's photos on Trinamool Martyrs' Day rally

The Trinamool Congress leadership on Saturday (June 14, 2025) decided that photographs of party chairperson Mamata Banerjee will feature on all official posters for the July 21 Martyrs' Day rally, as national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee has opted out stating he was not part of the movement in 1993. Often, the posters of Trinamool Congress feature the photographs of both the party chairperson and the general secretary. Over the past few years, as the stature of the Diamond Harbour MP grew, his photographs have prominently featured in the posters and banners of West Bengal's ruling party. 'The poster for the July 21 rally will contain only Mamata Banerjee's photograph. Abhishek Banerjee himself said his photo should not be there as he was not part of the original movement in 1993,' senior Trinamool Congress leader and the party's leader in the Lok Sabha, Sudip Bandopadhyay, told media persons. The decision of Abhishek Banerjee to opt out of the posters for the Martyrs' Day rally puts an end to all speculation about whose photographs should be given prominence at official events. From calendars to party posters, the Trinamool Congress has often grappled with the issue of which leaders' photographs should be prominently displayed. A few months ago, the 2025 calendar sent to district units displayed the photographs of both Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee, but the state leadership later instructed district leaders not to use the calendar. Earlier in February 2025, Abhishek Banerjee's photograph was not used at a party event at Netaji Indoor Stadium. The Martyrs' Day rally, held every year on July 21, is a major event of the State's ruling party, where the Trinamool Congress pays homage to the 13 Youth Congress workers who were killed in police firing during the Left Front regime. Check infighting Amid preparations for the annual rally, the Trinamool Congress leadership is trying to check infighting in the party, particularly in the State's Birbhum district. Senior Trinamool Congress leaders Subrata Bakshi, Firhad Hakim, and Aroop Biswas held a meeting with Anubrata Mondal and Kajal Sheikh, both of whom have been embroiled in a long-standing feud in the district. The party leadership urged both leaders to ensure that the factional feud does not spill into the public domain. The meeting comes days after an audio clip of Mr. Mondal abusing and threatening a police officer went viral. Mr. Mondal was heard not only threatening the officer but also using vile language against the officer's wife and mother. Mr. Hakim said that the party has given a 'last warning' to Anubrata Mondal and that he will not repeat such mistakes in the future. The July 21 Martyrs' Day rally is a widely anticipated event by the Trinamool rank and file, where the party chairperson is expected to outline the strategy for the Assembly polls scheduled in 2026.

EBC leader set to become next RJD Bihar unit chief

Patna, The Rashtriya Janata Dal on Saturday appeared all set to have an EBC leader as its Bihar unit chief with veteran politician Mangani Lal Mandal filing his nomination papers at the party office in the presence of founding president Lalu Prasad. Mandal, a former state minister and an ex-MP with tenures in both Houses of Parliament, had returned to the RJD in January this year after severing ties with the JD headed by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. According to RJD spokesperson Chittaranjan Gagan, who is also the returning officer for the party's organisational polls, Mandal was the only candidate to have filed his nomination papers for the post till the process came to an end in the afternoon. "Tomorrow is the date for scrutiny of nomination papers and if these are found to be in order, and Mandal does not withdraw from the poll, he will be declared elected to the post of state president on June 19," Gagan added. Mandal had joined the JD ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha polls alleging that the Extremely Backward Classes were getting a raw deal in the RJD. He was made the national vice president of the JD, but downgraded a year later, when he found himself among a dozen national general secretaries. He is said to have grown disillusioned with the JD upon being denied a ticket in last year's Lok Sabha polls. He would succeed Jagadanand Singh, an upper caste leader who had two consecutive terms as state president. Singh, whose son Sudhaker is the MP from Buxar, has not been keeping well for some time. Mandal's rise to prominence could be seen as part of the party's strategy to galvanise, in its favour, the numerically powerful backward classes ahead of the assembly polls.
