Kerry Washington's new action movie is a blast — and blew my expectations away

Tom's Guide09-05-2025

It's tough to decide whether to go to the theaters or stick to what's on the best streaming services. But if you want something to watch this weekend, go to your local cinema and check out Kerry Washington in "Shadow Force."
I'll be honest, when I saw the trailer, I wasn't particularly impressed. It felt like a cliche action movie in all the worst ways.
But I had a chance to see it at the Atlanta Film Festival and felt I had an obligation to go.
I'm glad I did, because I had a blast (pun somewhat intended).
Don't get me wrong, this movie doesn't break the mold, and it definitely has some of those aforementioned action movie cliches.
But it also has some great performances, hilarious moments and impressive action set pieces with some spectacular kills. Here's why you should go see 'Shadow Force' when it hits theaters this weekend.
'Shadow Force' stars Kerry Washington and Omar Sy as Kyrah and Isaac, respectively.
These two were former members of a special forces team known as Shadow Force, but they fell in love, had a son named Ky (Jahleel Kamara) and decided to abandon their team and go dark to keep Ky safe.
Unfortunately for them, one day Isaac's location is exposed to the world, and now Shadow Force director Jack Cinder (Mark Strong) has unleashed the remaining members of his kill squad to hunt Kyrah and Isaac down — offering $50 million to whoever can get the job done.
Full disclosure: This movie is borderline a rom-com masquerading as an action comedy at times.
There's an ex who isn't over the relationship, a woman trying to protect her family, and even star-crossed lovers connecting through the soulful music of Lionel Richie.
But for as much as this movie can be a love story, it's also got gunfire, explosions, and well-executed hand-to-hand combat.
The climactic action set piece, in particular, is up there with set pieces from the best action movies.
Set on an island villa, this scene devolves into a shootout that's thrilling to watch, with quite of few impressive kills. It then transitions into a chase sequence and a few final battles with another fantastic kill or two, and by the end, you feel like you more than got your money's worth.
Action isn't the only thing 'Shadow Force' has going for it — Jahleel Kamara is hysterical as Kyrah and Isaac's son and Da'Vine Joy Randolph kills it as Auntie, one of Kyrah and Isaac's old friends who is also hunting Cinder and the remains of Shadow Force.
Mark Strong as the villainous Cinder also produces a few incredible moments, including one that had people in my screening gasping in shock.
But these performances ultimately wouldn't make this a movie worth going to the theater for if the action isn't well-executed.
That's the main reason to go see "Shadow Force." So, go to your local theater, grab some popcorn and a soda and strap in for 104 minutes of mindless fun and Hollywood violence.

'The Gilded Age' season 3 trailer teases wedding drama, divorce and fabulous Carrie Coon outfits

"The Gilded Age" season 3 trailer has dropped, and it's clear the stakes are higher than ever in the HBO period drama, which returns June 22. It's been nearly two years that we last caught up with the Russells, the Van Rhijns, the Astors and all the other moneyed families that make up the New York society of "The Gilded Age," which stars Carrie Coon, Morgan Spector, Cynthia Nixon and Christine Baranski, among others. Back in December 2023, season 2 left off with Bertha Russell (Coon) officially winning the "opera war" against Mrs. Astor (Donna Murphy); Marian Brooke (Louisa Jacobson) breaking off her engagement to Dashiell Montgomery (David Furr); Ada Forte (Nixon) inheriting a surprising amount of money after the death of her new husband Luke (Robert Sean Leonard); and Peggy Scott (Denée Benton) leaving the newspaper after things got complicated with her editor. The new two-minute trailer sees both parental and marital discord hitting the Russell residence, with Bertha and George (Spector) disagreeing on whether their daughter Gladys (Tessa Farmiga) should marry for romantic love or financial security. During a February 2025 interview with Deadline, HBO Executive Vice President Francesca Orsi teased that season three of the series would explore a new era, when "divorce came to the forefront in United States relationships." "I think that there's a conversation to be had about arranged marriages, and if it doesn't necessarily work, what divorce looks like in that time, and what that bodes for society," Orsi told the outlet. "And then whether you're accepted in society or not, based on a divorce.' Does that signal major troubles ahead for the Russells? Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. Romance-wise, things look like they're going far more smoothly for Marian Brook and Bertha's son, Larry Russell (Harry Richardson), as well as Peggy, who sees a new love interest in one Dr. William Kirkland (played by Jordan Donica), a handsome doctor from Newport. The official season 3 logline reads: 'Following the Opera War, the old guard is weakened and the Russells stand poised to take their place at the head of society. Bertha sets her sights on a prize that would elevate the family to unimaginable heights while George risks everything on a gambit that could revolutionize the railroad industry — if it doesn't ruin him first." "Across the street, the Brook household is thrown into chaos as Agnes refuses to accept Ada's new position as lady of the house," continues the synopsis. "Peggy meets a handsome doctor from Newport whose family is less than enthusiastic about her career. As all of New York hastens toward the future, their ambition may come at the cost of what they truly hold dear.' It's here! the Nintendo Switch 2 just landed at my desk — and yes, I've got photos

We've just received our Nintendo Switch 2 review unit! Not only did Nintendo send Tom's Guide its new handheld/console hybrid, but we also received a handful of accessories for the system. Naturally, we're excited to finally have the Switch 2 in our office, and we wanted to show you everything we got. First up is the actual console, which comes in a box that looks similar to the original Nintendo Switch. The package has the system, left and right Joy-con controllers, an AC adapter, a USB-C charging cable, a Nintendo Switch 2 dock, a Joy-con grip for the controllers, two Joy-con straps and an HDMI cable. Next up is the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro controller. Though it appears similar to the previous Pro controller, this updated version is slightly thinner and has smoother edges. The biggest addition is a 'C' button that enables the Switch 2's voice chat feature. I spent a lot of time using this controller when I played Mario Kart World for 6 hours and can tell you it's a must-have peripheral. Speaking of must-have peripherals is the Nintendo Switch 2 Camera, which you'll need if you want others to see and hear you when you're in a group chat. I also got to check out this camera and found it works as advertised. I'd argue it's better than what you saw during the Nintendo Switch 2 reveal, since the frame rate is a lot smoother in person. Lastly, we also received a pair of Joy-Con wheel accessories. While the Pro controller is great for Mario Kart World, using this peripheral could make playing the game feel way more immersive. I can't wait to try this one out! The Nintendo Switch 2 launches worldwide on June 5. If you haven't already secured a system, be sure to bookmark our Nintendo Switch 2 restock page for the latest updates. We'll have a full review of the Nintendo Switch 2, so stay tuned!
