New Delhi, Aug 11 (PTI) A 38-year-old woman was arrested in Delhi for allegedly transporting more than 12 kilogram of cannabis concealed in trolley bag from West Bengal via train, police said on Monday.
According to police, she was supplying the contraband as part of an interstate drug supply network.
The accused, Archana Manna, from Kolkata, was arrested at Ashram Flyover while travelling in an autorickshaw with her daughter and two grandchildren, they said.
Preliminary investigation revealed that Manna, moved to Delhi in 2014 and has been working as a domestic help. Her husband died two decades ago.
She was allegedly lured into drug trafficking by acquaintances in Govind Puri, who offered her Rs 10,000 for each delivery.
Police said she was trained by the network in using encrypted apps and deleting call logs to avoid detection. Videos found on her phone showed her discussing the quality of ganja during purchase, they added.
They said that 12.55 kilogram of ganja, packed in 12 polythene packets and concealed in a trolley bag, was seized from her possession.
The contraband was confirmed to be ganja by a Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team at the spot, they said.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Harsh Indora said the operation followed specific intelligence received on June 16 about a woman transporting cannabis from Odisha and West Bengal to Delhi by train.
Police were deployed at Kashmere Gate railway station to monitor the suspect. The accused managed to slip out of the station amid the rush but was later traced to an autorickshaw heading towards Govind Puri.
She was intercepted at Ashram Flyover and the narcotics were seized after due legal procedures under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS) Act.
The accused has been booked under the NDPS Act and further investigation into the supply chain, believed to operate across Odisha, West Bengal, and Delhi, is continuing. PTI SSJ OZ OZ

After 5 years in jail, four set free from drug smuggling case

MUMBAI: A special Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) court on Friday acquitted four individuals, including two Nigerian nationals, who were arrested in 2020 for allegedly attempting to smuggle 502 grams of Cocaine into the city. The court said that the prosecution had failed to provide evidence against them. After 5 years in jail, four set free from drug smuggling case The incident dates back to November 2020, when the four individuals, Soniya Rafiq Khan, Ejike Offor, Kenechukwu Nelson Uteh, and Hazel Donald Corriea, were arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle cocaine from Trinidad, a Caribbean island, into India in a FedEx parcel addressed to a person named 'Andrea Tellies' in Kharghar, according to the Mumbai zonal unit of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI). Special Judge PP Jadhav on Friday ordered the release of the four individuals, who had been in custody since their arrest on November 18, 2020, and highlighted multiple gaps in the prosecution's case. Noting that none of the accused was present in the Air Cargo during the seizure, Judge Jadhav pointed out that the seizure panchnama does not bear the investigating officer's signature. 'Also, no person from the FedEx Courier Services has been examined by the prosecution as a witness. The prosecution claimed that Khan allegedly collected the parcel using forged documents and was about to hand it over to her co-accused, Offor and Uteh, to which the court said that the evidence produced was insufficient and also noted that there was no evidence for Offor and Uteh approaching Khan for taking the parcel. While acquitting the four individuals, the court said, 'The prosecution has failed to prove the seizure of contraband and there is no evidence for Khan visiting the FedEx Office to accept the delivery of the consignment.'

HC orders CB-CID probe into assault of convict prisoner

Madurai: Madras high court on Monday ordered the CB-CID to investigate the case concerning the assault on a convict prisoner by police personnel in Trichy Central Prison. A division bench of justice A D Jagadish Chandira and justice R Poornima passed the order while hearing a habeas corpus petition filed by M Angammal of Madurai, mother of the convict prisoner M Harikarasudhan. The petitioner stated that her son, Harikarasudhan, was arrested by the SS Colony police in Madurai for offences under the NDPS Act in 2020. In 2024, the I additional NDPS special court in Madurai convicted and sentenced him to 14 years of imprisonment. He was lodged in Madurai Central Prison, where he completed Class X. She mentioned that her son was transferred to Trichy Central Prison six months ago for his studies since he applied to pursue an ITI course. On July 26, her son was beaten up by deputy jailor, Manikandan using a lathi when he was lying in his prison cell. She claimed that several other police personnel came to the cell and assaulted her son, causing him severe injuries. On July 28, when their lawyer visited the prison for an interview, Harikarasudhan showed him the injuries. The police personnel forcibly took her son away without allowing him to speak to the lawyer and assaulted him. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 20 Things Women Should NEVER Wear! Undo Hence, the petitioner moved court seeking action against the police personnel. Earlier, the court called for a report from the Trichy principal district judge, who is the chairperson of the district legal services authority. According to the report, while Harikarasudhan was reading a newspaper, Manikandan came to the block for usual rounds and asked Harikarasudhan to stand and inquired why he did not go to work. Harikarasudhan, without standing, replied while sitting on the floor. Angered by this, Manikandan slapped him. Harikarasudhan retaliated by slapping Manikandan. Thereafter, Harikarasudhan was dragged from the prison block and assaulted by Manikandan and other prison personnel. The doctor's report confirms that Harikarasudhan sustained injuries and was referred to the prison hospital on July 27. Subsequently, treatment was provided to him. Admittedly, it is a case of assault and ill-treatment of a prisoner by prison staff inside the prison, the court observed.
