A joint study by Duchesnay and PeriPharm exposes critical gaps in access to innovative women's health products in Canada

The research reveals the challenges of introducing innovative medications in women's health in Canada
BLAINVILLE, QC, May 29, 2025 /PRNewswire/ - Duchesnay, member of Duchesnay Pharmaceutical Group (DPG), winner of the 2024 Life Sciences Innovation Award by ADRIQ, in collaboration with PeriPharm, is proud to announce the results of a landmark study exploring the accessibility of innovative women's health products in Canada. The research exposes systemic gaps and significant barriers that prevent Canadian women from accessing the innovative therapies they need.
The study found that of the 45 women's health products approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) from January 1, 2003, to December 31, 2023, only 24 (53%) had received regulatory approval by Health Canada as of July 2024 and only 13 of these products are currently reimbursed publicly.1
'These findings highlight a clear need to address inequities in how women's health is assessed, valued and prioritized,' said Dany Hallé, Vice president, Commercial Affairs, DPG. 'Striving to shape women's health ecosystem in Canada, we, at Duchesnay, believe that Canadian women deserve to have timely access to healthcare innovations.'
Another important issue highlighted by researchers is the delays Canadian women face when it comes to approval and reimbursement processes for women's health therapies. Compared to the general access timeline for medications in Canada, the process for obtaining public coverage listing for women's health medications takes one year longer and can even exceed three years.
The study suggests that the current evidence-based Health Technology Assessment (HTA) framework may not fully capture the added value of innovative drugs in women's health, potentially contributing to delays or barriers in reimbursement and market access.
'This is a call to action,' said Catherine Beauchemin, Ph.D., partner at PeriPharm. 'This initiative marks an important first step toward improving access to innovations in women's health. To advance women's health outcomes in Canada, we must start by understanding their needs and preferences.'
This study will serve as a benchmark and lay the groundwork for the development of a position paper co-written by leading experts in the domain addressing the challenges women ultimately face in the assessment of innovative medicines in Canada. This white paper would be hopefully available by year end.

Panama will allow controversial mine to export already mined copper to fund maintenance

PANAMA CITY -- Panama will allow a controversial mine that was closed after months of protests to export more than 120,000 tons of already mined copper concentrate to pay the costs of maintaining the inactive mine site, government officials announced Friday. Opposition to the massive copper mine led to some of Panama's most widespread protests in recent years before the country's Supreme Court rejected a deal that allowed a Canadian company to operate it. Toronto-based First Quantum Minerals said Friday that exporting the material that's sitting at the site will fund maintenance and environmental protection measures. Panama's President José Raúl Mulino called for those steps in March, when business groups were lobbying him to reopen the mine. Income from the mine accounted for nearly 5% of Panama gross domestic product the last year it operated. 'The purpose is to avoid, above all else, environmental damage,' Trade and Industry Minister Julio Moltó said Friday. He emphasized that the mine was not reopening, but said that the plan would ensure the site remained safe. The open-pit mine was temporarily closed in 2022 when talks between the government and First Quantum broke down over payments the government wanted. In March 2023, Panama's Congress reached an agreement with First Quantum, allowing subsidiary Panama Copper to continue operating the mine in a biodiverse jungle on the Atlantic coast west of the capital for at least 20 more years. The deal faced opposition from those who believed Panama wasn't getting as much as it should and from environmentalists and Indigenous groups who raised concerns about the mine's impact. Protests included a blockade of the mine's power plant. Protesters also blocked parts of the Pan American highway, including a stretch near the border with Costa Rica. On Nov. 28, 2023, Panama's Supreme Court ruled unanimously that the 20-year concession was unconstitutional

Canada Post asks jobs minister to force union to vote on ‘final offers'

OTTAWA - Canada Post says it has asked Jobs Minister Patty Hajdu to force a union membership vote on the proposals the Crown corporation put forward earlier this week. Canada Post presented its 'final offers' to the union representing 55,000 workers on Wednesday, with concessions including an end to compulsory overtime and a signing bonus of up to $1,000. But it stuck to a proposal for a 14 per cent cumulative wage hike over four years and part-time staff on weekend shifts – a major sticking point in the talks. Canada Post said in a statement Friday that the parties are at an impasse and it believes the best hope of reaching a new collective agreement is a vote administered by the Canada Industrial Relations Board. 'Despite months of conciliation and mediation, the parties remain unable to reach new agreements at the table,' it said. The Crown corporation said this week it logged nearly $1.3 billion in operating losses last year, raising further questions about its business model as letter volumes plunge and fears of a second strike in six months persist. Hajdu said in a statement that she and Secretary of State John Zerucelli met with Canada Post and union officials on Friday. 'A strong postal service is vital to a united Canadian economy and to the many Canadians and businesses that depend on it,' she said. 'I urged both parties to continue working together to find an agreement that works for both parties and maintains a strong and lasting postal industry.' The Canadian Union of Postal Workers said it shared its thoughts and concerns about negotiations and Canada Post's recent offers during the meeting. 'We were assured that the minister would continue to play an intermediary role in the bargaining process but will not intervene at this time,' it said in an update. Union officials say rallies are planned across the country on Saturday. This report by The Canadian Press was first published May 30, 2025.
