Attendance of doctors, staff in secondary hospitals needs to improve, says A.P. Minister

The Hindu08-07-2025
Noting that there is an improvement in the functioning of secondary hospitals in the State, Minister for Health, Medical Education and Family Welfare Satya Kumar Yadav said there is still substantial scope for improving the attendance of doctors and administrative staff in the hospitals.
After inaugurating a four-day training programme being held for District Coordinators of Health Services (DCHSs) at the office of the Director of Secondary Health in Tadepalli on July 8, Tuesday, the Minister recalled that in his previous meeting with DCHSs in May, a few key points were identified and the importance of training for healthcare professionals for better performance on these points was outlined.
Training
Thanking the Director of Secondary Health A. Siri for organising the training programme, the Minister said the desired changes can be brought about with coordination among healthcare professionals. While stressing the need for improving attendance of doctors and administrative staff at District Hospitals, he also noted with concern the poor utilisation of Dr. NTR Vaidya Seva services by the secondary hospitals.
Out of the total admissions of 1,33,011 during March 2024, only 20,641 pre-authorisations under Dr. NTR Vaidya Seva could be done, which means a conversion rate of 15.5%, the Minister pointed out. While the conversion rate has improved to 24% in June this year, it should reach 50% in the next two months, the Minister told the DCHSs.
Infrastructure
He said the government is focussed on improving healthcare infrastructure and that in the past one year, Ultra Sonography (USG) services were made available in 90 secondary hospitals, 149 X-ray machines were upgraded and provided, tele-radiology services were enabled in 89 hospitals and 20 new dialysis centres were approved for secondary hospitals. Also, 13 new Integrated Public Health Laboratories (IPHL) were made functional during the last one year. Each IPHL enables 134 diagnostic tests, he added.
The Minister asked the DCHSs to make field visits to learn about the ground-level issues, and that they should work with dedication towards achieving the goals of Viksit Bharat and Swarnandhra.
DCHSs of all 26 districts were present on the occasion.

Minister orders inquiry into Anakapalli DCHS and 21 medical staff for ‘dereliction of duties'

Minister for Health, Medical Education and Family Welfare Satya Kumar Yadav ordered that an inquiry be conducted into the alleged irregularities committed by 22 medical staff at a government hospital in Anakapalli district. According to a press release from the Medical and Health Department on Sunday, a team from Anti-Corruption Bureau (ABC) had conducted surprise inspections at the hospital in February 2020 and submitted the findings to the department last month. Based on the ACB report, the Minister said that a speedy inquiry should be conducted and disciplinary action taken against the 22 medical staff of the hospital, including District Coordinator of Health Services (DCHS), nine doctors and 12 head and staff nurses. The hospital had been operating a canteen without a valid licence and did not have proper documentation of the food being served to patients, the release said. The canteen failed to serve quality food and the nurses did not perform their duties properly, the Minister said quoting the report. The ACB held the DCHS responsible for failing to supervise the workings of the hospital and suggested penalties for the the official and also disciplinary action against the other 21 medical staff for dereliction of duties. Meanwhile, the Minister said that the incident from 2020 reflects the situation of government hospitals under the previous regime. After the TDP-led NDA government came to power, regular meetings are being held to review and monitor attendance of medical staff and to check corruption in government hospitals, the Minister said. It has been made clear to the district-level officers that they would be responsible for proper implementation of health schemes and performance of medical staff, he added.

Sports Min Mandaviya leads ‘Sundays on Cycle' honouring Kargil heroes

Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Mansukh Mandaviya led the 'Sundays on Cycle' campaign here, marking Kargil Vijay Diwas and celebrating the spirit of fitness and patriotism. The event witnessed over 800 participants, including personnel from the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), National Service Scheme (NSS), Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS), Gujarat Vidyapeeth, local cycling groups, and fitness enthusiasts. Across the country, CAPF personnel took centre stage as special partners in the campaign. A prominent rally in Srinagar was organised by the Srinagar Sector CRPF, with officers and jawans cycling from the historic Lal Chowk Clock Tower to SKICC Srinagar, echoing national pride and unity. The 'Sundays on Cycle' initiative was simultaneously conducted at over 6,000 locations, uniting people in the dual mission of saluting our Kargil War heroes and promoting a healthier, fitter India. 'Every year on July 26, we honour the bravery of our soldiers on Kargil Vijay Diwas. Carrying that spirit forward, today we proudly joined hands with our armed forces for the 'Sundays on Cycle' campaign. I had the honour of cycling alongside our armed forces and CAPF personnel to pay tribute to our brave soldiers," said Mandaviya. "The vision of a Viksit Bharat (Developed India) begins with Swasth Bharat (Healthy India). When people are physically fit, their mental and emotional resilience also grows—and a nation made up of such individuals becomes unstoppable. Fitness is not just about the body; it's a way of life that fuels discipline, focus, and purpose. I urge every citizen to dedicate at least one hour everyday to cycling or physical activity. When we move together, we grow together. A fit Bharat is a united Bharat, and together we will build a stronger, healthier, more self-reliant India," he added. In Delhi, despite overcast skies, more than 1,000 people joined the Sundays on Cycle event at Cannaught Place. The event was energised further by a spirited biking rally by the SHOR Foundation, which led a youth contingent through the city, raising slogans and waving the Tricolour in remembrance of the Kargil martyrs. Colonel Bakshi, a Kargil War veteran, who joined the Delhi rally, said, "This initiative has brought people of all ages together. At nearly 70, I feel proud to be part of something so inspiring." At the Delhi cycling rally was captain Akhilesh Saxena who lauded the movement. "The one most important aspect of a nation's strength, is the health of its citizens. I am filled with immense joy and pride in seeing citizens coming together to focus on their health and participate in Sundays on Cycle campaign," he said. The Delhi edition, conducted in collaboration with Raahgiri Foundation, also included yoga, Zumba, rope skipping, and interactive games for children like carrom, chess, ludo, and mini golf. 'Fit India Sundays on Cycle' is spearheaded by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, in collaboration with the Cycling Federation of India (CFI), Rope Skipping team led by Dr. Shikha Gupta, Raahgiri Foundation, MY Bharat, and My Bikes. The drive runs concurrently across all state and UT capitals, SAI Regional Centres, National Centres of Excellence (NCOEs), SAI Training Centres (STCs), and Khelo India centres.
