Russia says it struck Ukrainian missile plants
Russian forces destroyed a number of Western missile defence systems - including Patriot launchers and fire control radar in the Dnipropetrovsk and Sumy regions - that had been deployed to defend the plants, the ministry said.
"An attempt by the Kyiv regime, together with its Western partners, to organise the production of missiles to carry out attacks deep into the territory of the Russian Federation was thwarted," the ministry said.

Trump-Putin talks produced enough movement to justify Ukraine meeting, Rubio says
Aug 17 (Reuters) - Talks between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin produced enough movement to justify a meeting with Ukrainian and European leaders, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio told CBS on Sunday. Rubio also said both Russia and Ukraine would have to make concessions to end the war, adding that the United States might not be able to produce a scenario guaranteeing peace. European leaders will accompany Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy to meet Trump in Washington on Monday, seeking to bolster him as the president presses Ukraine to accept a quick peace deal after meeting Putin on Friday. "I'm not saying we're on the verge of a peace deal, but I am saying that we saw movement, enough movement to justify a follow-up meeting with Zelenskiy and the Europeans," Rubio told the "Face the Nation" show. Rubio's comments were among the first by senior U.S. officials present at the talks with Putin. In a social media post, Trump wrote, "BIG PROGRESS ON RUSSIA. STAY TUNED!" he gave no details Speaking separately to Fox News' "Sunday Morning Futures" program, Rubio said the talks had narrowed down the key issues. These included drawing borders, long-term security guarantees for Kyiv, and which military alliances Ukraine could have, he said, adding "there's a lot of work that remains." Putin has ruled out Ukraine becoming a member of NATO. Article 5 of the alliance's charter is a mutual defence pact obliging allies to defend a member from attacks. Steve Witkoff, Trump's special envoy to Russia, told CNN that the U.S. side had won "the concession that the United States could offer Article Five-like protection." Pressed for details, he said, "the United States is potentially prepared to be able to give Article Five security guarantees, but not from NATO, directly from the United States, and other European countries." This would be one of the topics for discussion on Monday, he said. According to sources, Trump and Putin discussed proposals for Russia to relinquish tiny pockets of occupied Ukraine in exchange for Ukraine ceding a swathe of fortified land in the east and freezing the front lines elsewhere. "We may not like it, it may not be pleasant, it may be distasteful, but in order for there to be an end of the war, there are things Russia wants that it cannot get, and there are things Ukraine wants that it's not going to get," said Rubio. In a separate interview with ABC, Rubio said if a deal could not be reached to end the war, existing U.S. sanctions on Russia would continue, and more could be added. When Zelenskiy visited the White House in February, the meeting ended in a shouting match. Rubio, speaking to CBS, dismissed the idea that the European leaders were coming to Washington to protect Zelenskiy. "They're not coming here tomorrow to keep Zelenskiy from being bullied. They're coming here tomorrow because we've been working with the Europeans," he said. "We invited them to come."

Miss Universe contestant, 30, is killed in freak accident with her $100K Porsche
A former Miss Universe contestant tragically died in a freak accident when an elk smashed through the windshield of her luxury Porsche. Kseniya Alexandrova, 30, was initially placed in a coma with severe brain injuries following the crash alongside her husband in Tver Oblast, Russia on July 5. The model's husband survived the crash, while she remained in hospital for over a month until she died on Friday. Her husband, who was driving the supercar when the elk jumped out in front of them, said he didn't have time to swerve out of the way before colliding with the animal. 'From the moment it jumped out to the impact, a split second passed. I didn't have time to do anything,' he told Russian outlet RIA. 'The elk flew into the car. The blow hit Ksyusha in the head. She was unconscious, her head was broken, everything was covered in blood.' He said that they were driving slowly at the time and were wearing seatbelts, but the low front of their vehicle meant it collided with the legs of the elk and the airbags did not deploy. The heartbroken spouse said they had married just four months before the crash, and revealed that his wife was making progress for some time as she lay in a coma before she passed away. The model had participated in the 2017 Miss Universe pageant and was a well-known model in her native Russia. Alexandrova's husband said his wife was directly hit as the elk went through their windshield, saying the 'blow hit Ksenia in the head.' 'She was unconscious, her head was smashed, everything was covered in blood. The worst thing is that the frontal bones of the skull were broken. It was clear that there was an open head injury,' he said. He said a passerby stopped and called for an ambulance, which arrived within 15 minutes and raced the Miss Universe contestant to hospital in Rzhev. Doctors decided she had to be transported to Moscow for more intensive treatment, and revealed that she briefly regained consciousness at Sklifosovsky Research Institute of Emergency Medicine. 'At first, they did not do a second operation. She could not speak because she was on a ventilator, but she was absolutely conscious,' he said. Alexandrova's husband said that they were driving slowly at the time of the crash and were wearing seatbelts, but the low front of their $100,000 Porsche Panamera (seen in a stock image) meant it collided with the legs of the elk and the airbags did not deploy He said medics then carried out a second operation, and although it was initially believed to be successful, she then 'suddenly plunged back into a coma.' 'Meningitis was diagnosed, which turned into more severe inflammatory brain diseases. The tests began to deteriorate, it came to blood sepsis,' he continued. 'Once they were able to start the heart... But the next day Ksenia died - it was not possible to restart the heart.' Tributes poured in for the model following her sudden death, with the Miss Universe pageant extending its 'deepest and most heartfelt condolences' to her family. 'Her grace, beauty, and spirit left an unforgettable mark on the Miss Universe family and beyond,' they wrote. 'May her memory continue to inspire kindness, strength, and love in all those who were fortunate enough to know her.'

Ukrainians left disappointed at Trump rolling out red carpet for ‘tyrant' Putin
Ukrainians have reacted with anger to the welcome received by Russian president Vladimir Putin as he arrived in Alaska for a summit with his US counterpart Donald Trump on Friday (15 Aug). Trump failed to secure assurances from Putin to an end to Russia's conflict with Ukraine, despite describing the meeting as 'great progress'. However, residents in Kyiv were less enthusiastic. 'I was hoping that the U.S. wouldn't roll out the red carpet for an enemy. How can you welcome a tyrant like this?' said Natalya Lypei, 66, who lost her son during the war. Another, 60-year-old Natalya Cucil, said: 'There are no results. I am very surprised that Trump, the leader of a country that acts as an international police force and is always trying to maintain order in the world, meets with a terrorist who is wanted by the whole world.'
