New York's governor on Monday proposed the construction of the state's first new nuclear power plant in decades.
Gov. Kathy Hochul directed the state's power authority to develop an advanced, zero-emission facility in upstate New York that she hopes will help create a clean, reliable and affordable electric grid for the state.
She said the state power authority will seek to develop at least one new nuclear energy facility with a combined capacity of no less than one gigawatt of electricity. That would increase the state's total nuclear capacity to about 4.3 gigawatts.
The Democrat said the state needs to secure its energy independence if it wants to continue to attract large manufacturers that create good-paying jobs as it deactivates aging fossil fuel power plants.
We're going to get it done, Hochul said, speaking at the Niagara County Power Project in Lewiston. This historic initiative will lay the foundation for the next generation of prosperity.
The governor said the state hasn't decided on a potential location, but that upstate communities appear receptive, given the potential for creating 1,600 construction jobs and 1,200 permanent jobs once the facility is operational.
Everybody is raising their hand right now, Hochul said. It's going to be hard to decide.
Among those likely in the running is the Nine Mile Point nuclear plant in Oswego. Hochul's administration has been supportive of Maryland power company Constellation's bid to build a new nuclear reactor at the two-reactor facility.
American utilities have been broadly reluctant to launch new nuclear plants due to high cost overruns and delays on recent high-profile projects.
Georgia Power Company completed the first two new nuclear reactors in the country in a generation last year. But Units 3 and 4 at Plant Vogtle in Waynesboro, Georgia, cost nearly USD billion and were powered up some seven years later than initially hoped.
Last month, the Tennessee Valley Authority, the nation's largest public power company, applied to the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission to develop what it bills as a next-generation nuclear power plant at its Clinch River site in Oak Ridge.
The federally owned utility provides electricity to seven states and operates three traditional, large nuclear power plants, providing about 40 per cent of the Tennessee Valley's power.
New York currently has three active nuclear plants, all located upstate along Lake Ontario and owned by Constellation. The Nine Mile Point, Robert Emmett Ginna and James A. FitzPatrick plants provide about 3.3 gigawatts of power, or roughly 20 per cetn of the state's electricity, according to Hochul's office.
The last nuclear power plant built in the state was Unit 2 at Nine Mile Point in 1989. At its peak, nuclear power provided about 5.4 gigawatts, or roughly one-third of the state's electrical supply, according to the advocacy group Nuclear New York.
The New York Power Authority previously operated two nuclear plants, including the Indian Point Power Plant, which shut down in 2021. That facility was located along the Hudson River some 40 kilometres north of New York City in Buchanan.
The other facility, once operated by the state, was the FitzPatrick plant, which the power authority sold in 2000 and is now run by Constellation.

Israeli PM confirms ceasefire, says achieved objectives of Op Rising Lion

Tel Aviv: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday confirmed that Israel has accepted a ceasefire proposal with Iran, marking the end of 12 days of intense hostilities between the two regional rivals. In an official statement released by the Prime Minister's Office, Netanyahu declared that Israel had met all strategic goals of its military campaign, dubbed Operation Rising Lion, and even exceeded expectations. "Israel had achieved all the objectives of Operation Rising Lion, and even far beyond that. Israel has removed a dual immediate existential threat – both in the nuclear domain and in the ballistic missile domain," the statement read. According to the statement, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) had "achieved complete air superiority over Tehran's skies, struck a severe blow to the military leadership, and destroyed dozens of central regime targets in Iran." "In the past 24 hours, the IDF has struck hard at targets of the regime in the heart of Tehran, eliminated hundreds of Basij operatives -- the oppression mechanism of the terror regime -- and eliminated another senior nuclear scientist," Netanyahu's office said. Netanyahu expressed gratitude to US President Donald Trump and the United States for their role in supporting Israel's operations and for "participation in eliminating the Iranian nuclear threat." "In light of achieving the operation's objectives, and in full coordination with President Trump, Israel has agreed to the President's proposal for a bilateral ceasefire," he added. However, just before the ceasefire came into effect, Iran launched a final barrage of ballistic missiles toward Israel. One of the missiles struck a residential building in Beersheba, resulting in the deaths of four civilians. Iranian state media later clarified that the missiles were launched prior to the formal implementation of the ceasefire. Netanyahu's office also warned of serious consequences in case of any future violations of the ceasefire, stating, "Israel will respond forcefully to any violation of the ceasefire." US President Donald Trump confirmed the ceasefire on his social media platform, Truth Social, announcing that the truce between Iran and Israel was now in effect. He urged both nations to adhere strictly to the ceasefire terms and avoid further escalation. The ceasefire comes after nearly two weeks of escalating violence that began with Israel's Operation Rising Lion, which targeted key Iranian military and nuclear assets. In retaliation, Iran launched missile attacks on Israeli cities and, later, on US military bases in Qatar and Iraq. Tehran's move followed American strikes on its nuclear facilities in Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan.

New Delhi: The rising tensions in the Middle East have thrown international air travel into disarray, with many airspace closures amid the Israel-Iran conflict. The airspaces over Qatar, the UAE, and Bahrain were closed on Monday night after Iran launched a missile attack on US military bases in Qatar in retaliation for the American strikes on Tehran's three key nuclear facilities - Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan. LIVE UPDATES As a direct fallout of the closure, many flights were cancelled and delayed. As soon as Iran struck the US base last night, Qatar temporarily closed its airspace, forcing planes to divert away from Doha - one of the world's busiest airports. In a post on social media, Qatar said this is part of a set of precautionary measures being taken based on developments in the region. Soon after, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain also joined Qatar in closing their airspace. All flights flying around the UAE were also diverted. A picture by FlightRadar24 shows flight chaos as all airlines avoided flying over Doha. Not a single plane can be seen in or around Qatar airspace. "Lots of aircraft are forced to turn around," the flight tracking website said. The airspace in the Middle East opened nearly 12 hours after the Iranian attack as Tehran hinted at a ceasefire with Israel. The imagery by FlightRadar24 today shows many flights flying over Qatar. However, the air traffic remains constant around the Middle East. Iran's retaliatory attack on US Base in Qatar In retaliation for the US bombing Iran's nuclear sites, Tehran last night targeted an American base in Qatar, Al-Udeid air base, the largest strategic asset of the US army in the West Asia region, with a "devastating and powerful missile attack". Tehran underlined that it will "not leave any attack on its territorial integrity, sovereignty, and national security unanswered" under any circumstances. "The number of missiles used in this successful operation was equal to the number of bombs the United States used in its assault on Iran's nuclear facilities. The targeted base was also located far from urban areas and residential zones in Qatar, ensuring minimal risk to civilians," read a statement from the Secretariat of Iran's Supreme National Security Council. A spokesman for Iran's Armed Forces said the attacks on the American base in Qatar were carried out by the Revolutionary Guards Corps, the ideological arm of the Iranian military. A few hours later, Trump said Iran gave the United States notice prior to shooting missiles at its military base in Qatar. "I am pleased to report that NO Americans were harmed, and hardly any damage was done. Most importantly, they've gotten it all out of their 'system,' and there will, hopefully, be no further HATE," Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social. Iran-Israel ceasefire US President Donald Trump on Tuesday said that the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Iran has "now come into effect", and warned the two arch enemies in the Middle East not to violate the truce deal. "THE CEASEFIRE IS NOW IN EFFECT. PLEASE DO NOT VIOLATE IT," he wrote in a post on his Truth Social platform. Iranian state-run media also said that the ceasefire with Israel came into effect following five waves of missile attacks on Israeli-occupied territories, which killed at least seven people. Even moments before the ceasefire came into effect, Iran reportedly fired its last round of missiles. After Iran, Israel too confirmed the truce deal, saying a "test ceasefire" is in effect till 7 pm.
