At 43, I finally married my high school crush

'Six years ago, I felt stuck in my life. For the past 12 years I had lived as an ex-pat in Dubai, but a break up at 37 had left me with a broken heart and questioning everything. I decided I needed a break from my day-to-day life, and so my mum flew out from my home city of Edinburgh to meet me in the Seychelles in the Indian Ocean. Something about the idyllic setting, the lush greenery, the smell of the sea allowed me to take a step back and see my life with more clarity. What was it that I wanted to achieve personally and professionally? Taking a notepad and pen, I decided to write a Desire Statement. It was a technique I'd been introduced to by a life coach; a lesser-known manifestation technique where you write a note as if penned by your future self. It was the second time I'd attempted one. The first had been filled with ambitious dreams. This time I played it simpler, really being honest with myself. When you are in your late thirties and have gone through a breakup, you start to question so many things. You wonder if you are going to be alone all your life, whether you will ever have children. And so I thought about the person I would like to meet next, using very clear words of what he would look like, his personality, and how we would act together. I wrote: 'My love life has never been so fulfilling. I am in a new relationship – he is tall, in great shape, picks me up easily, loves my playful nature, and thinks I am beautiful (and tells me often). He is handsome, super thoughtful, and generous. We love working out together.' Later, when I got home to Dubai, I typed up my desire statement and stuck it on the wall in my bathroom. Six weeks later I was back in Edinburgh visiting family when mum told me she thought I should sign up to the dating app Bumble, and that it was time for me to put myself out there and meet someone new. She would manage my account, she said (on Bumble, women make the first move if they are matched). We could have some fun with it. I reluctantly agreed. Everything happened incredibly quickly after that. Graham's face was one of the first to appear. He may have been 20 odd years older than when I'd last seen him, and now with a beard, but I knew instantly who it was: the boy I'd liked all the way through school. At our prom, I may have gone with someone else, but I was determined not to leave that night without something to remind me of Graham. I asked him for a picture. But in the end I did better than that and we kissed. Not in front of my date, I hasten to add. It was a cheeky kiss, and that was that. We never saw each other again. Despite the fact I'd liked him for five years, it never went anywhere. The timing just wasn't right. I was determined to travel; first as a holiday rep, then as cabin crew. At age 24, I settled in Dubai where I ran a personal styling business. Graham meanwhile stayed in Edinburgh and worked in software for a bank. Throughout the years, I kept the photo of the two of us at our school prom. It was a forever reminder of my high school crush. And now I was looking at him again. Of course I was surprised, mostly that he was even single. There was some initial confusion after I messaged him. Had I moved back to Edinburgh, he asked? I explained mum had set up the account, which confused things even more. It was definitely me looking for a date, not mum! What struck me immediately was how at ease he was at messaging. There was no issue with communication. And so we arranged to meet one afternoon. I'd known Graham since I was 12 years old but I was still incredibly nervous as I turned up at 4pm outside Harvey Nichols in Edinburgh and had to reach up on my tiptoes to give him a kiss on his cheek. I am 5ft 2inches and he's 6ft 2inches. The date went on until 2.00am. When we kissed at high school I had butterflies and I thought that was what happens when you're 17 and kiss the guy you really like. Twenty-one years later, when we kissed on the first date, I had the same butterflies. That's when I realised it's not the age, it's the person that makes you feel like that. The last thing he said on that date was, 'When am I going to see you again?' I said he was welcome to Dubai for the second date, if he felt the same way in the morning. Four weeks later Graham came out to Dubai. That's when I remembered the desire statement in my bathroom. It was scarily accurate. From wanting someone tall, to their gym habits (I wanted someone I could work out with). The biggest thing was I'd written I wanted someone who'd tell me I was beautiful. On our first date, Graham had leant in and told me just that. I decided to tell him about it, explaining that it was something I love doing and that I'd written one just before meeting him. I said: 'You're going to think I wrote it afterwards, because when you read it, it's you.' It wasn't really Graham's thing, but he was supportive of what it meant for me, and that it had seemed very much to have worked. After that first visit to see me, we managed a long distance relationship for four years – Covid didn't help. We would have calls that lasted hours. Every Saturday, we'd have an online date, sitting down with a bottle of wine and a pizza 4,000 miles apart. Eighteen months ago, he moved out to Dubai. And last June I married my one and only Bumble date in the Seychelles. Afterwards we had a big party at a friend's castle in Scotland, with more school friends present than I ever expected I'd have at my wedding. He and I have often talked about the timing of how our relationship has happened. We are right for each other right now, but we agree that it wouldn't have been right 20 years ago. Would we still be together if we'd got together after high school? I wouldn't have travelled. Neither of us would have the life we have now, and the things we love. At the age of 44, we know what we like, we know what we don't like. We're very good at spending time alone and we're both very realistic; neither of us are perfect, but neither of us are prepared to settle for something we don't want. Graham doesn't necessarily embrace the story of the desire statement in the same way I do, but when I tell other women they find it inspiring. I know I'd have loved to have heard about our story when I was going through my breakup. I still write desire statements, I apply them to all aspects of my life. A few months after I re-met Graham I sold my personal styling business. I'm now a brand strategist and I strongly believe that you can create the life that you want. Having a desire statement helps you to do that. It's empowering. My advice to anyone feeling a bit lost would be to do one, but be honest with yourself. One thing I did differently with that desire statement was that I didn't try to be positive for the sake of it. I didn't say how amazing my life was going to be, I focused more on how I wanted my life to make me feel. We create our own lives and you get one chance at it, that we know of. Ask yourself what it is you want to create. As told to Boudicca Fox-Leonard. Broaden your horizons with award-winning British journalism.
