
Good Samaritan unites Springs to feed the needy
Springs is in for a cold winter, but Franci Swanepoel vows to do something about it. The Daggafontein resident has brought together people from all over Springs to feed the less fortunate.
Franci started the Greater Springs Soup Kitchen because of her experiences and deep connection to the community.
'As founder of the Greater Springs groups, which began with addressing municipal issues like power outages and waste, we naturally expanded to other community-serving initiatives.
'When someone suggested a feeding scheme, we launched the Greater Springs Soup Kitchen as a community project.'
She said the initiative has a place in her heart because of her lived experiences.
'My eldest son has been missing for years, and I understand the struggles many face. We can bring hope and kindness to those who need it most by providing a simple cup of soup and bread.'
Her husband, Jaco, spoke about how Franci has become a mother to many in Springs.
'Franci does not do this for money or recognition. She genuinely cares about people, and it shows in how she is loved.'
Despite their challenges, he said she was resolute, strong, and kept fighting the good fight.
'Everything she does is a testament to her passion for Springs. During Covid, we fed 27 families from our pockets because she could not stand seeing anyone go hungry.'
Franci hopes that with the weekly soup kitchen being held all over Springs, the initiative could bring people together.
'By coming together, showing kindness and offering hope, we demonstrate gratitude for life's blessings. Our motto, 'Together we stand, divided we fall', reflects the power of unity in making Springs a better place for everyone.'
Franci asks that whoever wants to donate should refrain from donating money.
'Donations from individuals and businesses can make this outreach regular. Contributions of ingredients, time, love and support are invaluable. A warm meal and smile can go a long way as winter approaches.'
The soup kitchen runs every Saturday from 16:00 (volunteers should arrive an hour earlier) in the Meat Mecca parking lot.
Anyone wishing to contribute can do so on Saturdays from 15:00.

Over 23% of SA households experienced inadequate or severely inadequate access to food, a recently released report on food security has revealed. The report, Food for Thought: Reflections on Food Insecurity, — which was launched by the Socio-Economic Rights Institute (Seri) on Tuesday, — aims to better understand how vulnerable communities in the country experience hunger and food insecurity, particularly in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. The results of the report comes from interviews Seri conducted with partner organisations representing informal workers, recyclers, domestic workers, and residents in informal settlements. The report also exposes the harsh realities of food poverty in both rural and urban settings. While SA produces enough food to feed its population, the report highlighted that economic access, not food availability, is the biggest barrier. 'Many households may 'move in and out of hunger' during the course of the month as they have to make decisions about food based on their income. In addition to economic or direct access, another way in which households or individuals are able to access food in dire economic circumstances, is through food aid,' read the report. Low wages, rising food prices, and structural inequalities leave many unable to afford nutritious meals. This not only affecting the unemployed but also working-class families earning minimum wage, the report added.

Over 330 arrested in Gauteng during joint high-density operations The Gauteng Traffic Police and Traffic Wardens, the SAPS and other law enforcement agencies arrested over 330 people in joint high-density operations across Gauteng on May 30 and June 1. The CoE recorded 69 arrests in areas including Etwatwa, Tembisa, Benoni, Springs, Boksburg, Tokoza, Dunnotar, Norkem Park, Duduza, Primrose and Zonkizizwe. Among the arrests, 15 were for drinking and driving, 14 for drug possession and five for selling liquor without a licence. The entities searched 944 individuals and 416 vehicles. High-density operations in the CoT saw 96 arrests in areas including Mabopane, Akasia, Mamelodi, Sunnyside and Olievenhoutbosch. The Department of Community Safety (DCS) commended law enforcement officials for their continued collaboration and commitment to making these arrests. 'Drinking and driving, public drinking, possession of drugs and dealing in drugs are a sore thorn that officials are continuously dealing with decisively,' said Gauteng DCS spokesperson Ofentse Morwane. Louis Massyn aims for historic 50th Comrades Marathon medal
Louis Massyn is ready to make history and claim his 50th medal at the Comrades Marathon on Sunday Image: Supplied Louis Massyn is looking forward to making history on Sunday and becoming the first person to achieve 50 Comrades Marathon medals. Massyn, 74, from George in the Eastern Cape, completed all 49 Comrades Marathon races since first entering in 1973. "The only events I missed were the two years during the Covid-19 pandemic when the race didn't take place and in 2022 when I entered but did not participate due to a knee injury."I am so thrilled and excited for Sunday. I prefer the down run, so I am really looking forward to it," said Massyn. This year's running of the iconic race from Pietermaritzburg to Durban will be a challenging 89.98km and with a new street finish outside People's Park. It is also the 98th edition of the Ultimate Human Race and is the 49th down run. Massyn, who is running for the Outeniqua Harriers, will leave the Pietermaritzburg City Hall at 6am on Sunday with a special starting batch, including 50 friends from overseas and locally. I am especially happy that the 50th run is a downhill race as I prefer going down all the major hills along the route. "A number of friends and family are heading to KwaZulu-Natal to see me at the finish. It is going to be quite special and for the first time a street finish," he said. Massyn said the idea of running the Comrades Marathon started in an Anglican church in Odendaalsrus in the Free State. "I was part of the congregation when the Bishop challenged any runner when he made reference to the Comrades Marathon in his sermon. I then decided that I was going to run the next Comrades Marathon. "I was 22 years old then and I did not belong to any running club. I paid the R4 entry fee and entered as an independent athlete. At that time you didn't need to run qualifying races to enter. In 1973 I ran my first road race, the Comrades Marathon and it was a down race," he said. He said at that time they did not receive anything at the finish.
