India is open to modifying its electric car manufacturing policy to factor in possibly lower import tariffs under the India-US trade agreement. The Scheme for Promotion of Manufacturing of Electric Passenger Cars in India (SPMEPCI) was announced in March 2024, but it is yet to be operationalised.SPMEPCI planned to offer discounted import tariffs to high-end EV companies committing investments in India.The scheme details have not been announced amidst lukewarm response from potential investors. "The guidelines could be launched in a few weeks," a senior official said while adding that a final nod from some ministries is awaited. These guidelines will spell out operational contours of the scheme, after which applications from EV companies can be invited.The incentives can be modified once the India-US bilateral trade agreement is finalised.SPMEPCI required applicants to invest at least ₹4,150 crore in EV manufacturing, offering in return a lower 15% duty for importing high-end electric cars. Beneficiaries also need to achieve a minimum domestic value addition (DVA) of 25% within three years, scaling up to 50% at the end of five years.But recent considerations to lower import duties on cars following pressure from US President Donald Trump threatens to render the scheme ineffective. Earlier this week, Elon Musk-led Tesla officials red-flagged India's import tariffs on cars as a major deterrent for their entry to the country.These comments were in the backdrop of India-US bilateral trade agreement (BTA) talks where import duties are a major flashpoint. Officials said India will tweak SPMEPCI if import duties on cars are lowered and incentives for local manufacturing need to be sweetened.India currently charges an import duty of up to 100% on cars to protect its domestic manufacturing industry. There are various levels of duties on auto components as well. Trump first announced but subsequently paused reciprocal tariffs to fire up domestic manufacturing in the US. He has repeatedly criticised India's high import tariffs on automobiles and others that make US exports uncompetitive.

The US Embassy in India Saturday again addressed foreign nationals in the United States announcing incentives for those willing to leave. In a post on X, the US Embassy warned international individuals illegally present in the country to leave immediately. However, it followed this message with what it called a 'historic opportunity for foreign nationals who wish to leave the United States, including those unlawfully present.' The statement said: 'Depending on their circumstances, they might receive financial and other assistance from the US government to depart.' Those interested have been directed to register through the Trump administration's self-deportation Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Home App. The US government is promoting the CBP Home App for its incentives tied to voluntary exits of illegal immigrants. US Secretary of Homeland Security described self-deportation as the 'best, safest and most cost-effective way to leave the United States to avoid arrest.' Foreign nationals in the United States residing illegally should leave immediately. Currently, the DHS claims that the average cost to arrest, detain and deport someone from the US is $17,121, The Guardian reported. According to the official Homeland Security website, incentives tied to self-deportation include a $1,000 stipend, and financial and travel document assistance. The stipend is granted once confirmation is received through the CBP Home App that the return has been completed. Those who voluntarily register may also receive help with booking tickets and obtaining necessary travel documentation. 'Aliens requesting assistance will have a timely departure arrangement facilitated for them (estimated departure to be within 21 days of approval),' the website states. Other incentives include a longer departure period for self-funded travellers, deprioritisation for detention or removal by ICE, and improved chances for future immigration options. The DHS outlines two eligible categories: 'Non-criminal aliens illegally in the United States who had an encounter with CBP either at a port of entry or between ports of entry' and 'categorical parolees whose legal presence in the United States has expired or will soon expire.' Applicants must be physically present in the US at the time of applying. Just days earlier, the US Embassy in India had issued another alert for visa overstayers, warning they 'risk arrest and heavy fines or incarceration… may be deported and could face a permanent ban on future travel to the United States.'

Tension at Durgadi Fort as rival Shiv Sena factions clash during Id-ul-Azha prayers
Tensions escalated in Maharashtra's Thane district on Saturday (June 7, 2025) after members of both the Eknath Shinde-led and Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray-led factions of the Shiv Sena attempted to reach Durgadi Fort while Id-ul-Azha prayers were being offered at its foothill. According to police officials, protestors from both factions tried to ascend to the Durga temple atop the hill during the course of the Id-ul-Azha prayers being held at the base, resulting in chaos in the area. Prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC were in effect, and several protestors were subsequently detained for violating the restrictions. Leaders from both sides, including Shinde faction functionary Ravi Patil and Uddhav faction leader Vijay Salvi, led rallies demanding that 'Durgadi Fort should be freed'. Their convoys converged at Shivaji Chowk, near the Durgadi temple, where slogans were raised by supporters of both groups. 'Police took measures to prevent protestors from both factions from reaching the fort. The protestors attempted to breach the barricades, triggering scuffles and a standoff with the police. We detained several members in preventive custody so that it does not escalate,' Deputy Commissioner of Police Atul Zende said. Durgadi Fort has long been at the centre of a communal dispute regarding the control of a mosque located within its premises. Access to the Durga temple is typically restricted during Id-ul-Azha to facilitate prayers at the foothill. Members of the Shiv Sena have criticised the arrangement, alleging discrimination against Hindu devotees and calling for equal access to the site. The Idgah located at the fort has been under litigation since 1976, when the Majlish-e-Mushavreen Majjid Trust filed a suit seeking control. In 2024, the court ruled in favour of the State government.
