Police find human remains in Hamilton landfill as search for missing woman continues
Partial human remains have been found in a months-long search of a Hamilton landfill as police investigate the disappearance of a woman who was last heard from in December.
Hamilton police said Thursday they are now waiting on DNA test results to confirm an identity.
Det. Sgt. Daryl Reid said investigators believe Shalini Singh was killed in her apartment and her body was removed through the building's garbage system.
Singh was initially reported missing in December alongside her boyfriend, but police said he showed up at a family member's house outside the city the next day and has allegedly refused to co-operate with the investigation.
Police said they obtained surveillance footage from the apartment building where the couple lived and there's no video of Singh leaving after Dec. 4, the day her family last heard from her.
Police have been searching the Glanbrook landfill since late February and the partial remains were found last week.
Reid said Singh's family has been informed about the discovery and is receiving support from the force's victim services unit.
'Information that I provided to them last week was hard for them to hear, but it's also a first step in hopefully getting some answers for the family,' he told a news conference.
'They have been very patient and anxious just waiting to find out what happened to their loved one.'
Anyone with information about the case is urged to come forward.

Toronto police identify boy, 15, fatally shot on weekend in Weston
Social Sharing Toronto police have identified a 15-year-old boy who died in hospital after he was shot in Weston neighbourhood on Saturday night. Jahkai Jack, of Toronto, was shot near Emmett Avenue and Jane Street, police said in a news release on Wednesday. Officers were called to the area shortly after 10 p.m. When police arrived, they found him outside, suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead. No suspect has been arrested in the case. Police said the suspect fled the area before they arrived on the scene. Jack is the city's 14th homicide victim of the year. No photo of him has been released.

Winnipeg school's tipi stolen during National Indigenous History Month

According to Jean-Paul Rochon, principal at Angus McKay School, a tipi was set up on the school grounds for a two-week land-based learning residency. In an emailed statement, Rochon said the tipi was stolen during the early hours of Tuesday morning, prompting a police report to be filed. He said the tipi was also set up to acknowledge National Indigenous History Month, the summer solstice on June 20, and Indigenous People's Day on June 21. 'Further, it was a visual reminder of our commitment to reconciliation with Indigenous communities whose children attend Angus McKay,' said Rochon. In a post to social media, the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs said, 'The theft of this special tipi has deeply impacted an important learning and reconciliation opportunity for the school and community.' The Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs is asking for anyone with information to contact Angus McKay School.
