A Michelin-Starred Brewpub From Chicago Is Popping Up in Beverly Hills

Moody Tongue, a brewery and restaurant group in Chicago that boasts a Michelin star for its tasting menu counter, is popping up inside the Four Seasons Los Angeles at Beverly Hills from June 13 to September 14. During the pop-up, Moody Tongue will take over the Four Seasons' lounge to offer its high-end sushi with Tokyo-meets-LA beer pairings from chef Hiromi Iwakiri. Founded by Jared Rouben, Moody Tongue debuted a 14-seat counter in 2020 that eventually earned two Michelin stars (it's been demoted to one since) under the direction of chef Jared Wentworth (previously of Michelin-starred gastropub Longman & Eagle). In February 2023, Moody Tongue opened a sushi restaurant in New York City and expanded to West Palm Beach earlier this year. Inventive sushi dishes include Ora King salmon with black truffle and mushroom duxelle, and a scallop hand roll with snap peas and corn. Moody Tongue will serve its Asian-influenced beers, such as juiced lychee IPA and pressed Asian pear saison aged in Sangiovese wine barrels. Creative sushi preparations with non-traditional ingredients have been commonplace in Los Angeles for decades; the California roll was allegedly invented here in the 1960s, while more recently, Encino's Sushi by Scratch has taken the Americanized omakase format to new heights. Reservations for Moody Tongue Sushi in Beverly Hills can be made here. No more cream tops at these cafes The Los Angeles Times has a story on how cafes in the city are tiring of serving cream tops over their carefully crafted coffee drinks. Places like Maru in Arts District and Mandarin in Pasadena are removing the add cream top option as a resistance against the dominance of the sweet, creamy float. Mariah in LA for Pride Month Just in case you happened to catch social media videos of Mariah Carey in LA this past week, the singer was indeed at the Eagle in Virgil Village, though allegedly the appearance was for a private party. More doughnuts in the Valley Beloved Woodland Hills doughnut shop Blinkies has taken over a strip mall spot in Encino, moving closer to the heart of LA, according to Reddit. Almost a billion for Dave's Hot Chicken Armenian-founded chicken shop Dave's Hot Chicken, which Eater first featured in 2017 as a 'mindblowing' take on Nashville-style hot chicken, has been sold to an investment group for somewhere in the neighborhood of $1 billion, according to LAist. Investors like Drake and Samuel L. Jackson came on board over the years, and the chain now has over 300 locations across the country, plus outlets in the Middle East and Europe. Sweetgreen's New Menu Comes from a Michelin-Starred Steakhouse—Here's What You Need to Order

If you're like me, your Sweetgreen salad order is predictably consistent. (Buffalo chicken salad, hold the carrots, extra pickles, please.) But once I heard that the fast-casual chain teamed up with COTE Korean Steakhouse—aka the first and only Michelin-starred Korean steakhouse in the U.S.—to create a Korean barbecue-inspired menu, I knew I had to mix things up. The menu just hit stores nationwide, though it's only available for a limited time. It includes three new items that are designed to deliver all the savory, punchy flavors that KBBQ is beloved for. Below, you'll find my reviews of each item, as well as original photos for transparency and an overall ranking. Read on for my hot takes. (Note: Prices and item availability may vary by location.) PSA: Sweetgreen Just Launched a Healthier Version of Your Favorite Fast-Food Side Taryn Pire What It Is: grass-fed steak with savory-sweet KBBQ glaze, romaine lettuce, white rice, apple kimchi sauce, spicy roasted broccoli, cucumber kimchi and pickled cabbage Price: $16 The glaze on the meat conjures fond memories of bulgogi as you chew. The steak was very tender, despite being fully cooked through. The apple kimchi sauce was really interesting—sweet, vibrant, fruity, just a touch sour—but I wished it was a bit spicy, too. The rice provided nice texture and bulk, while the cukes and slaw offered plenty of crunch. They were refreshing and tasty, but I wished they were more acidic. (The cucumbers tasted very fresh, more like a raw kimchi, and the pickled cabbage could've been more pickle-y, IMO.) I'd hoped the broccoli would add heat, but I didn't find it spicy at all. For peak KBBQ flavor, mix everything together before digging in. Learn more Taryn Pire What It Is: romaine lettuce, spring mix, roasted sweet potato, spicy broccoli, cucumber kimchi, bold KBBQ glaze, apple kimchi sauce, pickled cabbage and crispy onions Price: $12 Sweet potatoes took over for steak (along with crispy onion bits) to create a vegetarian option for Sweetgreen fans. Personally, I thought the spuds paired gorgeously with the umami-rich, salty, savory side of glaze. The pickled cabbage replaced much of the tartness missing from the cucumbers, but this was still equal parts satiating, refreshing and just right for eating al fresco. I'd recommend stirring in half the glaze, then seeing if you want more; the kimchi sauce will be stirred in as well, so you might not want to overdo it at first. Learn more Taryn Pire What It Is: grass-fed steak with savory-sweet KBBQ glaze, cucumber kimchi, white rice, apple kimchi sauce and pickled cabbage Price: $16 This had everything the bowl did, minus the greens. It felt less instinctual to mix everything together, but I wanted that apple kimchi sauce on every forkful. While I still wouldn't mind more spice, the ingredients were very balanced and complementary. The steak was savory and tender, but the marinade's sweetness was most dominant. The rest was mildly acidic, vegetal and crunchy, besides the impeccably fluffy-not-sticky rice. Learn more Try This Simple Sweetgreen Menu Hack to Get Two Meals for the Price of One

The DF plate brings a large sope topped with beans and a thin slice of beef alongside the soup of the day and starchy plantains. For anyone who misses the predecessor's rotisserie chicken, half-bird orders are still available, served with sauteed greens and potatoes. Wash it down with a tepache, a sweet cider made in-house with guava and pineapple that's spiked with tequila. 3481 18th St., San Francisco. Colorful sweets and more Local chocolatiers Topogato launched its first brick-and-mortar store just in time for Mother's Day. Confections in the display case may feature smoked tea peach truffles and others decked out with paint splatter flourishes. Brews by the bay Sip on crisp lagers near sleeping sea lions. Humble Sea Brewing Co. opened its third Bay Area location at San Francisco's Pier 39, where restaurants have created a thriving dining scene. Hot pizza popup goes steady Recent arrival Jules has brought crowds to the Lower Haight since opening mid-May. The main draw is chef-owner Max Blachman-Gentile's pizza that bends regional genres, with a crust that's crispy like New York pies but topped with the Bay Area's prime produce. Find personal spins on classic pepperoni and mushroom, along with dishes like chicken with blistered snap peas, and charred arrowhead cabbage with Calabrian chile butter. Plan ahead, as reservations seem to vanish as soon as they go live. Shooters only Darts gets the augmented reality treatment at an expansive new bar and entertainment center. Visitors to SoMa's Golden Eye are now shooting for triple bullseyes with a drink in hand, or trying at least. Eater SF reports there are classic cocktails with a twist along with non-alcoholic drinks. To munch in between rounds there are plates of seven-layer tuna tartare, oysters and a seared mushroom steak. New Vietnamese restaurant Pho Star is cooking with everyday favorites around the corner from Guerrero Street in the Mission District. The menu is straightforward, with noodle soups and rice plates served with fragrant chicken and tender meats. Spring rolls and banh mi with five-spice chicken rank high among Yelp users. 3214 16th St., San Francisco. New spin on beloved space The former home of the Mission District's Universal Cafe is back with a new tenant and a new tune. Side A, a bistro mashing up Midwestern flavors and Japanese listening bar style, is now offering short rib gnocchi and chicken cutlets in mustard sauce. Parker Brown, a former chef at shuttered seafood temple Aphotic (which may resurface), and his wife, Caroline, aim to keep the mood casual, with bottles of Miller High Life and straightforward wine list. The Browns hope these elements, plus live DJ sets, set a mood akin to a dinner party. The space where Ritual Coffee served lattes in the Lower Haight did not sit empty for long. Eater SF reports the Coffee Lama has taken over the location, with a similar menu of coffees and expanded food options that include burritos and fruit bowls. 1300 Haight St., San Francisco.
