
Space mission creates first ever artificial solar eclipse
The satellites aligned with the Sun in a way that allowed the Occulter spacecraft to block the giant star's bright disc, casting a shadow across the Coronagraph's optical instrument.This shadow allows the Coronagraph's instrument, which is called ASPIICS, to successfully capture images of the outermost part of the Sun's atmosphere, known as the corona.Scientists increasingly need to study the corona, but find it hard to do so without an eclipse because the sun's surface is one million times brighter.The amazing pictures are uninterrupted by the Sun's bright light."It is exciting to see these stunning images validate our technologies in what is now the world's first precision formation flying mission," said Dietmar Pilz, who is the ESA's director of technology, engineering and quality.
What is the Proba-3 mission all about?
The Sun's corona can reach temperatures of around 1,000,000 degrees Celsius or more. It's much hotter than the sun's surface below and this temperature difference is something that continues to both intrigue and puzzle researchers. The Proba-3 mission aims to tackle this longstanding mystery by studying the corona in more depth. The Coronagraph spacecraft's instrument ASPIICS is able to see more detail, finding fainter features than other missions. "Seeing the first data from ASPIICS is incredibly exciting," said Joe Zender who is a scientist on the Proba-3 project."ASPIICS will contribute to unravelling long-lasting questions about our home star."Rather than relying on humans, the spacecraft lined themselves up with the sun in a manner "akin to driverless cars", the space agency said.When the spacecraft blasted off in December last year, they had enough fuel to keep going for around two years.After five years, it is expected they will burn up in the Earth's atmosphere.

Struggling to sleep? Your gut bacteria could be to blame
Your gut health can impact everything from your mood to your immune system, but it could also be the cause of your poor sleep, a study has found. Specific types of gut bacteria have been linked to insomnia risk by researchers, while insomnia itself has also been linked to an abundance of certain 'bugs' in the gut. Insomnia, which means a person has difficulty falling and staying asleep, affects about a third of adults in the UK. It can be caused by anxiety, noise, alcohol, caffeine or shift work, according to the NHS. Several studies have explored the effects of the gut microbiome on various sleep characteristics, but it's not yet clear how different groups of gut bacteria might affect the risk of insomnia. The study, published in the journal General Psychiatry, used data on 386,533 people with insomnia from a previously study, gut microbiome data for 18,340 people from the MiBioGen alliance and for 8,208 people from the Dutch Microbiome Project with 71 groups of bacteria in common. Their analysis revealed associations between specific gut microbes and insomnia. Overall, a total of 14 groups of bacteria were positively associated with insomnia and eight groups showed a negative association. Insomnia itself was associated with a reduction of between 43 per cent and 79 per cent in the abundance of seven groups of bacteria and a 65 per cent to a more than fourfold increase in the abundance of 12 other groups. Researchers found the Odoribacter class of bacteria, in particular, was significantly associated with the risk of insomnia. This type of bacteria plays a role in producing short-chain fatty acids like butyrate, which in the right levels can help maintain a healthy gut. However, there are some limitations to the study. All the study participants were of European descent, so the results may not be more widely applicable as the make-up of the microbiome varies among different ethnicities and geographies, researchers point out. Diet and lifestyle – which affect the microbiome – were also not accounted for. Although bacteria are linked to insomnia, those same bacteria may be shaped by a person's eating habits, stress levels, and environment. 'Overall, the intertwined effects of insomnia on gut microbiota, and vice versa, represent a complex bidirectional relationship involving immune regulation, inflammatory response, release of neurotransmitters, and other molecular and cellular pathways,' study authors said. The authors conclude: 'Our study offers preliminary evidence supporting a causal effect between insomnia and gut microbiota, providing valuable insights for the future development of microbiome-inspired treatment plans for insomnia.' These treatment plans might include the use of probiotics, prebiotics, or faecal microbiota transplantation, they suggest.

People based in Asia and parts of Australia will get to see the eclipse from start to in Europe and Africa may still see it all as Museums Greenwich advises that in the UK the Moon is due to rise above the horizon just in time for people to see the total lunar eclipse. It says the "maximum will occur at 7.33pm BST from the UK, with the eclipse's actual maximum at 7.11pm when the Moon is below the horizon." The Moon will then gradually move out of Earth's shadow until 9.55pm. The advice is to find a high point with a clear view to the east, as the Moon will be low on the horizon and quite difficult to see.

Christine Baranski took aim at Gayle King and Katy Perry over their Jeff Bezos-funded trip to space as she sneered at modern corruption. Gaye King and CBS were also slammed for the gushing and glossy coverage on the network, as it was unclear who - if anyone - footed the bill for the expedition. Non-celebrities face a $300,000 fare to make the same trip. Bezos got huge exposure for his fledgling space exploration company and was seen opening the capsule door to welcome his friends back to Earth. Breathtaking footage showed King and other celebrities including Sanchez and Perry screaming while weightless and peering into the vast emptiness of space. The flight itself lasted just 11 minutes, but there was plenty of build-up to blast-off and excitement after the A-List crew touched back down in West Texas, with CBS alumnus Oprah Winfrey among those waiting to greet the crew. King responded to critics who called the trip a 'space ride ', saying it was sexist to describe it in such a way. 'They call it a ride, which I find very irritating because they never say men went for a ride,' King, 70, said. Responding to accusations that the suborbital flight had no real scientific purpose, King spoke with fellow crewmate, former NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe on CBS Mornings. 'There's so many things that have been developed in space that benefit Earth... from pharmaceuticals to, like, research on agriculture,' Bowe said. 'And, you know, I paused there because we did research and it was emotional... Part of what I accomplished in my flight was I was looking at the future of being able to produce crops that can withstand harsh environments so we can look at food security here on Earth, and simultaneously, we also were able to certify that device so more people could do research on New Shepard.' It is unclear what specific research Bowe conducted, but footage of the flight showed the all-female crew floating, marveling at the view, and holding personal items. Bowe held a small Bahamas flag and pop star Katy Perry carried a daisy and a list of the setlist of her upcoming tour while shrieking the lyrics to Louis Armstrong's 'What a Wonderful World'. King insisted the flight was significant, saying 'you have never said to a [male] astronaut, "What a ride." [Don't] call it a ride.' She added: 'It's called a flight or a journey. A ride implies it's something frivolous or light hearted. There's nothing frivolous about what we did.'
