Nathan Collins hopes Thomas Frank remains at Brentford after international break

Independent3 hours ago

Nathan Collins will return to Brentford from Republic of Ireland duty hoping Thomas Frank is still in charge amid speculation he is set to be appointed Tottenham boss.
The PA news agency understands Spurs are closing in on the Dane to replace the sacked Ange Postecoglou, after former manager Mauricio Pochettino ruled himself out of the running.
Bees defender Collins admitted it had been difficult to avoid the rumours as he and his international team-mates prepared for Tuesday night's friendly in Luxembourg.
The 24-year-old said: 'Every time I turn on the TV, I see it. I can't get away from it, unfortunately.
'But I have my own problems with the game tomorrow, staying fit and looking after myself. I haven't taken too much of an interest.'
Since the squad first assembled in Dublin ahead of Friday night's friendly draw with Senegal, Collins has been joined at the Gtech Community Stadium by Ireland colleague Caoimhin Kelleher after the keeper completed an £18million move from Liverpool.
The pair have joked about the possibility of the man who signed him leaving within days, but even if that does happen, the defender is confident the club will have a plan.
He said: 'Yes, we have been joking about it. But he is all right. Brentford is a good club that whatever happens, they will have a plan. There are good people in the back room plan, so there will be a plan.
'If he stays, even better. We can only see what happens.'
Whatever happens, 26-year-old Kelleher will be lining up in a Brentford shirt next season and his new club-mate cannot wait to play in front of him.
Collins said: 'I am looking forward to it. I get on really well with him here.
'He shows his qualities as a keeper as well, but it will be even better when we can train together every day and build our relationship a bit more, on and off the field, to help Brentford and Ireland as well.
'I am buzzing for him. It's a great move for him and he deserves to be a number one at a club.'
In the meantime, the pair will hope to help extend Ireland's unbeaten run to four games since they were beaten 5-0 by England in the Nations League at Wembley in November when they run out at the Stade de Luxembourg.
That was a painful evening for Collins and his team-mates, but one he believes served a purpose.
He said: 'The hurt in the dressing room after, it was not a nice place. For me, it created a new hunger. It did definitely reset me to want to do better and improve for the next camp.
'It might work in a good way for us.'

Thomas Tuchel drops England team hint with contrasting plans for two hopefuls

England boss Thomas Tuchel is set to make changes to the side that only beat Andorra 1-0 at the weekend for the meeting with Senegal at the City Ground, and goalkeeper Dean Henderson may be handed an opportunity Ivan Toney may have to wait for his England chance. Former Brentford striker Toney has been out of the picture since going to the Saudi Pro League and must have been hoping to start against Senegal having not featured against Andorra. ‌ But Thomas Tuchel has hinted heavily that Harry Kane will start which means that Toney - back in the squad for the first time since leaving the Premier League last summer - may only get a run-out as a substitute. ‌ England boss Tuchel said: 'Let's see what the game demands. It is important we get to know him as a personality and it is clear in training what he can do as a goalscorer. Let's see what the game brings but he has every chance to play.' One player who could get an England audition against Senegal on Tuesday night however is Crystal Palace stopper Dean Henderson. READ MORE: Harry Kane handed 'Cristiano Ronaldo warning' by England boss Thomas Tuchel Tuchel also rates Burnley 's James Trafford highly as England look to their keeper options to put pressure on No1 Jordan Pickford. The England boss is preparing to change the keeper but still wants to go strong against Senegal after the lacklustre win against Andorra. Tuchel said: 'Jordan is, in the moment, in front. We chose a very, very serious line-up against Andorra to also not give the signal that we are preparing something or trying something. 'There was no doubt we could have played with Trafford or Dean Henderson in goal against Andorra but Jordan is, in the moment, slightly ahead. 'He will do everything to stay ahead and the others, hopefully, to do everything to challenge him but it could be a time to give some minutes to Dean or Trafford.'

Liverpool star to follow John Heitinga to Ajax as the former Reds assistant bids to rebuild Dutch giants after leaving Anfield

Ajax want Liverpool goalkeeper Vitezslav Jaros on loan. The Czech Republic international, 23, is well known to Ajax coach John Heitinga after working with him last season. Heitinga, a former Everton defender, arrived at Anfield last summer and served as Arne Slot 's No 2 throughout their Premier League-winning campaign before agreeing to become Ajax boss at the end of last month. Jaros, meanwhile, signed for the Reds as a 15-year-old but only made his Premier League debut this term after replacing the inured Alisson Becker in a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace. The stopper, who earned his first cap for his national team in March last year, has had spells on loan with St Patrick's Athletic, Notts County, Stockport County and sturm Graz. The Premier League champions moved quickly to bolster their goalkeeping unit after the sale of Caoimhin Kelleher by bringing in 20-year-old Hungarian stopper Armin Pecsi from Puskas Akademia. With the arrival of Giorgi Mamardashvili following a loan spell at Valencia, first team opportunities are likely to be even harder for the Czech keeper to come by. In May, Heitinga agreed a two-year contract and replaces Francesco Farioli, who departed the club after a single season in charge. The moves confirmes the 41-year-old's fourth stint in Amsterdam, having enjoyed two spells at the club as a player and a brief stint in charge of the senior side in 2023.

Bukayo Saka speaks out on injury fears in 'horrible' time for Arsenal star

Bukayo Saka has opened up on the concerns he had for his future as a player when he underwent surgery on a hamstring injury in December. The Arsenal forward's season was derailed when he was forced out of the Gunners' 5-1 win over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on December 21. It proved to be a nightmare injury for the 23-year-old who would miss 101 days of action and not feature again till April 1. Incredibly he scored just seven minutes into his return, netting in a 2-1 win over Fulham, but he had genuine concerns over how he would be when recovering from injury. 'The first two days were the toughest – that realisation that I've got what I've got and I need an operation. You start to think … am I going to be the same?' Saka said while on England duty. But after two days, the surgery was done and successful and you just look forward. 'I was really positive and put in all the work I needed with my diet, in the gym, on the pitch. I feel I've come back in a good place. 'It is about how much you want it – and I wanted it a lot. I knew the games I was coming back to and wanted to be in the best shape possible which is why I did everything.' The timing of the injury made the difficult situation even more stressful as Saka felt a bit rushed into the decision to go under the knife. 'It was horrible. Normally, you get more time to make a decision,' he said. 'But it was going to be Christmas, the surgeons want to be with their families, so I decided on the spot that we were doing the surgery. 'It was about deciding whether I was going to be there on Christmas Day and, obviously, that was the last thing I wanted. 'So I had to do it at 5am on Christmas Eve. Credit to the surgeon – he got up early to do it. I was out of the hospital at about 3 or 4pm and home. Christmas Day, I went to my cousin's house but I was in a big brace and had crutches.' Saka scored twice more after his return from injury, netting against Real Madrid and PSG in the Champions League. He picked up another injury on the last day of the Premier League campaign, but is fit again and ready to play for England on Tuesday against Senegal in Nottingham. 'After the last game of the season I had a little strain,' Saka said on Monday. 'Fair play to England, they managed me well. The manager left me out (on Saturday against Andorra) and said I will play tomorrow. More Trending 'I love coming to England camps and playing for England. It has been a bit of frustrating year with injuries but I am here now and looking forward to tomorrow.' On the prospect of Saka returning to the England starting XI on Tuesday, Three Lions boss Thomas Tuchel said: 'Very excited, because I could see that he worked hard to come back from his injury. 'He had this minor discomfort in the last match [of Arsenal's season], which worried me a little bit. Then he just had one full training session and one half training session. 'We decided in the end, to protect myself a little bit, to not let him be in the squad. But he is happy. He will start tomorrow and, of course, is a key player for us.'
