Gerakan deputy president Oh Tong Keong has filed an appeal against a High Court ruling that ordered him to pay RM550,000 in damages to DAP veteran Lim Guan Eng for defamation.
Oh's lawyer, Chai Ko Thing, said the appeal was filed on May 21.

Mara to enhance collaboration with Cambridge University
LONDON: Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) will be enhancing its collaboration with Cambridge University, says Datuk Dr Ashraf Wadi Dusuki. The Mara chairman said he had a discussion with the university's representatives, who were told 12 Maktab Rendah Sains Mara (MRSM) taught the Cambridge International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) syllabus. "Student performance was very encouraging, with 147 scoring straight As. "We (Mara) also have a comprehensive educational ecosystem. "They (Cambridge representatives) were very excited when we shared these facts. "Our focus is not only sending students overseas but to ensure a path for them to enter Ivy League universities," he told reporters in London on Sunday (June 1). Ashraf Wadi is in London as part of the delegation for Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's working visit to Britain. He said Cambridge representatives have also agreed to go to MRSM to give students a taste of the Cambridge orientation. "In that sense, students can be prepared early," he said. Mara has also agreed to conduct joint research and co-funding with Cambridge in areas such as quantum technology and artificial intelligence, said Ashraf Wadi. "For example, we will send five lecturers for master's and doctorate courses in Cambridge and the university will sponsor another five," he said. He added that Mara has also agreed to conduct leadership professional courses to produce professors and lecturers for academia and also for industries. "The training module will be developed by Cambridge and will take one month," he said. On another matter, Ashraf Wadi said three top universities in the United Kingdom have agreed to offer discounts on tuition fees for Mara-sponsored students, namely Warwick University, Birmingham University and Edinburgh University. "Both Warwick University and Birmingham University have agreed to offer a 20% discount on tuition fees and Edinburgh University offered 10%. He said this could save Mara about RM103,000 per student over the span of three years. He added that with the savings, Mara could look into increasing allowances. "I met with students in Sheffield and Manchester and the feedback that I got is that their cost of living has increased significantly," he said.

PM makes surprise visit to MCF Chess event for grandson
KUALA LUMPUR: Amid a packed schedule, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today made a brief but meaningful stop to support his grandson, Sulaimaan Mohamad Khairul, at the Mini Chess Festival (MCF), held in conjunction with the Kuala Lumpur International Book Fair. The thirteen-year-old Sulaimaan is competing in the inaugural MCF, organised by the Malaysian Chess Federation (MCF) and the New Straits Times Press (NSTP), at the World Trade Centre (WTC). He is taking part in the Under-18 category of the MCF Open Rapid Team Chess Tournament. Upon arrival, Anwar was welcomed by NSTP Business Development and Special Projects Manager Tengku Kaifi Mirza Tuan Cherit and Berita Harian News Editor (Features and Religion) Nazmi Yaakub. The prime minister, who spent around 10 minutes at the venue, was also seen engaging warmly with participants and spectators. His presence sparked excitement among the young chess players, many of whom took the opportunity to greet him and snap quick photos. Sulaimaan, when met, said he joined the competition organised by NSTP and MCF with the aim of winning it. The eldest of four said he learned how to play chess at the KL Chess Academy in 2020. "Every year, I also take part in chess tournaments," he said. Sulaimaan's father, Mohamad Khairul Ahmad Jahudi, 45, said he was proud and happy with his son's achievement in participating in the chess competition. He said he also wanted his son to build character and experience the ups and downs of competing. "The highs and lows, the wins and losses are valuable experiences he can carry with him in life," he said. Speaking to NSTP reporters later, Tengku Kaifi said Anwar's visit was a meaningful gesture that affirmed NSTP and MCF's efforts in promoting educational and intellectual development among youth through chess. "Chess enhances strategic thinking and problem-solving skills and is a healthy form of competition that has a positive impact on students. "As such, we feel excited, appreciated and encouraged that what we are trying to promote to the public has been acknowledged by the prime minister himself. "It shows that he (Anwar) also supports efforts by the wider community to educate students and further strengthen their thinking skills through learning chess," he said. With four categories, children, adults, open, and team tournament, MCF has attracted more than 200 chess enthusiasts of all ages, offering a total prize pool of RM20,000. The festival, held from May 28 to June 1, involves different tournaments, including the Open Blitz, National Youth Blitz, Open Rapid Team, National Youth Rapid, and Open Rapid. Meanwhile, before visiting the tournament, Anwar also stopped by the NSTP booth at the book fair, where a selection of NSTP publications, New Straits Times, Berita Harian, and Harian Metro, was available to visitors.

No financial constraints, Pos Balar bridge reconstruction to begin soon
GUA MUSANG: The reconstruction of the collapsed bridge at Pos Balar is now in the final stage of procurement and is expected to begin shortly, according to the Orang Asli Development Department (JAKOA) director-general Datuk Sapiah Mohd Nor. She dismissed claims that financial issues had delayed the project, saying swift action was taken after the bridge collapsed on March 9. 'For any infrastructure project, including the Pos Balar bridge, procurement must comply with government procedures. 'This process involves budget allocation and technical assessments. The procurement decision has been finalised and construction is scheduled to start this month,' she said during a media briefing in Pos Pasik today. JAKOA has allocated RM400,000 for the project, which will see the construction of a more resilient and safer bridge for the remote Orang Asli community. 'The new design considers the area's geography and terrain, with weather conditions also influencing the construction specifications,' Sapiah said. Media reports yesterday noted that the collapsed bridge had yet to be repaired. The reports also called for intervention from Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Rural and Regional Development, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, to expedite the reconstruction.
