Dunelm's £19 bedside table reduced four times in sale as shoppers say it's 'gorgeous'

Decorating your home can come with quite a hefty expense as furniture's not always cheap, which is why it's always wise to keep an eye out when big homewear brands have a sale. Fortunately for shoppers looking to refresh their bedroom space, Dunelm has launched a massive clearance sale with reductions on items including rugs, bedding, storage and more. This particular Elements Griffin Compact Bedside Table was initially priced at £79 and has been slashed to £19.75. The item has been marked down four times since January, boasting an impressive average rating of 4.8 out of 5 from delighted customers online. Featuring a rounded compact design, the bedside table includes a drawer and open shelf with a 'modern' painted metal finish, reports the Liverpool Echo. Love dreamy Welsh homes? Customers have been commending its 'sturdy' construction in their reviews. On the Dunelm website, the complete product description states: "Crafted from durable metal, this bedside table features a contemporary design that effortlessly complements various decor styles. It includes one drawer and one shelf, providing ample storage space for your night time essentials. "The drawer offers a discreet spot to keep personal items out of sight, while the open shelf is perfect for books, magazines, or decorative items. The compact size of this bedside table makes it an ideal choice for smaller spaces, ensuring that even the cosiest bedrooms can benefit from its stylish functionality." Over on the Dunelm website, one customer remarked: "These bedside drawers are just so lovely to look at, very solid (heavy) metal construction, easy to put together." A second review stated: "Fab colour, good looking bedside table. Heavy and sturdy and good value. The drawer is a little stiff to close." A third customer commented: "This was easy to put together and much heavier than expected. Quite a quirky design which I like." However, some customers found the assembly of the bedside cabinet challenging. This sentiment was echoed in a review which read: "Lovely cabinet. It required 16 hex nuts to be fitted to fix the legs in position. You would think that would be easy. Nightmare." Another shopper added: "Really good quality and well packaged. Stylish and contemporary colour for my teenage son's bedroom." One reviewer noted: "Great quality, quite heavy and very sturdy. Looks more expensive than it was. Great design love the shelf." For a different bedside table in a more muted tone, Argos have the Habitat Otto 1 Drawer Round Bedside Table - Grey for £35. Alternatively, The Range has the Polo Round Bedside Table in White for £111.99 online.

£200 payment for state pensioners born before 1959 to be made soon

The one-off payment is worth at least £200 and is being paid out to pensioners as part of the Winter Fuel Payment scheme. This cash boost will automatically land in bank accounts later this year Around nine million pensioners are set to receive a payment of at least £200 as part of the Winter Fuel Payment scheme. With the current cost of living affecting many UK households, this financial support has been designed to help older people cover the cost of heating bills during the colder months. ‌ If you were born before September 22, 1959, you could be entitled between £100 and £300 to help you pay your heating bills for this winter. This payment is also known as 'Winter Fuel Payment', which is a one-off payment. This cash boost will automatically land in bank accounts later this year, with no need for individuals to claim it. ‌ ‌ Those eligible will receive the money between the months of November and December, ahead of the winter season and Christmas time. Thanks to changes in eligibility rules, millions more pensioners will benefit from this support this year. This means that many who missed out on the winter allowance in 2024 can anticipate this bonus in the coming year. Labour initially stripped millions of pensioners of this benefit before being compelled to reverse their decision. ‌ Now, approximately 75% of seniors, those earning less than £35,000, will retain this cash boost. Those under 80 will receive £200, while those over 80 will be granted £300, reports Birmingham Live. Winter Fuel Payments typically hit bank accounts in November, ensuring everyone has the funds in time for Christmas. Initially, all pensioners will receive the cash. As per the latest reports, around 11.6 million people received a Winter Fuel Payment in 2023-2024, an increase of 214,000 from the previous year, and numbers grow every year. However, it's important to note that HMRC will reclaim it from those whose incomes exceed the threshold of £35,000. Earlier this year, the Government backtracked on its unpopular decision to alter the winter fuel scheme. This follows the government's announcement to cut the Winter Fuel Payment in July 2024, removing the eligibility to millions of pensioners. However, after significant backlash, Prime Minister Keir Starmer committed in May 2025 to easing the cuts, expanding the eligibility to receive the one-off payment. By doing so, millions of pensioners will be able to receive the extra funds to help cover energy costs and household bills during the upcoming season. This is especially important to those with fixed incomes, offering relief and stability in the current cost-of-living situations.

UK drivers warned over 'avoiding' road instead of having to follow new rule

TfL has said it will 'closely monitor the situation' after new figures showed that around 13 per cent of drivers are dodging the toll fees at the Silvertown Tunnel in London A substantial number of drivers are shunning the recently launched Silvertown Tunnel - opting to boycott the crossing by refusing to stump up for its contentious toll fees. The route was free but now drivers will be charged up to £4 per journey. Statistics published by Transport for London (TfL) exposed the escalating problem, showing that roughly 13 per cent of motorists are deliberately swerving the crossing charge. ‌ Instead of paying the toll, numerous drivers have switched to the Woolwich Ferry as their preferred option - a change that has triggered a dramatic spike in ferry numbers since the tunnel's launch. During weekdays alone, the ferry has witnessed an extra 1,278 cars each day, marking a 36 per cent jump in traffic. ‌ ‌ The effect has proved even more striking at weekends, with daily numbers rocketing by 1,538 vehicles, amounting to a whopping 58 per cent surge, reports Birmingham Live. The figures highlight growing public defiance against the tunnel fees, as motorists hunt for cost-free alternatives despite extended queuing times and possible hold-ups. The Silvertown and Blackwall Tunnels three-month monitoring report stated: "We are reviewing how to manage potential longer-term increases, for example, with improved real-time information. We expect travel patterns to settle, but will continue to closely monitor the situation." ‌ Opened on April 7, 2025, the Silvertown Tunnel is a new road tunnel in East London that runs beneath the River Thames, connecting Silvertown with Greenwich Peninsula to ease pressure on the Blackwall Tunnel. The purpose was to manage traffic and generate revenue for improvements related to the tunnel. However, it was met with criticism from drivers, forcing them to find alternative routes to avoid the fees, Highway News explained. The Mayor of London, Labour Party politician Sadiq Khan, said: "The new data TfL has published today clearly demonstrates the impact the new Silvertown Tunnel is having. It's a big win for London." "Since it opened in April, we have seen congestion significantly reduced at the Blackwall Tunnel, ensuring more Londoners get to their destination on time. The discounts and concessions we have put in place have also helped to encourage public transport uptake, boosting the numbers of journeys being made on the three cross-river zero emission bus routes by 160 per cent." Alex Williams, Chief Customer and Strategy Officer at TfL, added: "We are fully committed to monitoring the impact of the tunnels, including how it impacts other river crossings and traffic along major and local roads in London."
