Alex Palou becomes first Spanish winner of Indianapolis 500, dashing Larson's 'Double' dreams

Álex Palou cemented his place in motorsport history on Sunday by winning the 109th running of the Indianapolis 500, becoming the first Spanish driver to take the chequered flag in 'The Greatest Spectacle in Racing.'
The 28-year-old passed 2022 winner Marcus Ericsson on lap 187 of 200 to secure a career-first Indy 500 triumph, marking his fifth win of the 2025 IndyCar season and the sixth overall for Chip Ganassi Racing at the iconic event.
'I cannot believe it. What an amazing day. What an amazing race,' said Palou, who led a jubilant celebration after the finish, drinking the traditional milk and kissing the famed Yard of Bricks at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. 'It's my first oval win — what better place than here?'
Palou, a native of Barcelona, said he hoped his historic victory would inspire more Spanish fans to follow the sport.
'Hopefully they are celebrating as much as I am here,' he said. 'But honestly, if I was the 50th Spanish driver to win it, I would be just as happy.'
Ericsson, driving for Andretti Global, was visibly disappointed after finishing second. 'I had the race covered,' he said. 'Second means nothing in this race.'
David Malukas finished third for AJ Foyt Racing, while American Josef Newgarden's hopes for a third consecutive Indy 500 ended prematurely due to a fuel pump failure.
Teammate Will Power also endured a difficult day, finishing 19th after both Penske drivers started from the rear following pre-qualifying infractions.
Earlier in the week, team owner Roger Penske sacked three executives following a second technical violation within a year — a move that further clouded the team's campaign despite its record 20 wins at the Brickyard.
Larson's 'Double' dashed again
NASCAR star Kyle Larson's highly anticipated attempt at the fabled 'Double' — racing both the Indy 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 in Charlotte on the same day — ended in disaster for the second straight year.
Larson spun out on lap 91, crashing into the wall after contact with Takuma Sato unsettled his car on a restart. He finished 27th.
'Just a bit crazy there on the restart,' said Larson. 'I got loose and kind of got all over the place. Just hate that — got a little too eager.'
The crash also ended the races of Sting Ray Robb and Kyffin Simpson.
Though Larson managed to reach Charlotte in time for the Coca-Cola 600, his misfortunes continued. He was involved in another crash on lap 246 and failed to finish.
This marked his second unsuccessful attempt to join Tony Stewart, who in 2001 became the only driver to complete the grueling 1,100-mile feat across two vastly different racing disciplines in one day.
Asked if he would attempt the double again in 2026, Larson remained uncertain. 'The double is a tough undertaking,' he admitted. 'The window of time is just too tight.'
Ganassi celebrates sixth Indy 500 win
The victory gave Chip Ganassi Racing its first Indy 500 title since 2022. Team owner Chip Ganassi praised Palou's drive, calling it 'an incredible thing.'
'It's going to make Alex Palou's career, it's going to make his life, and it has certainly made mine,' Ganassi said.
Palou has now won three IndyCar championships in four seasons and appears well on course for another as the 2025 season progresses.

Real Madrid sign Argentina teenager Mastantuono on six-year deal

Real Madrid have signed 17-year-old midfielder Franco Mastantuono from Argentine side River Plate on a six-year contract, the LaLiga club said on Friday. The Spanish outfit had agreed to sign Mastantuono for about $45 million last week and the talented teenager, who can also play on the wing, will be a Real Madrid player from August 14. Having come through River Plate's youth system, Mastantuono was part of the first team in the 2024-25 season. In February last year, he becane the youngest scorer in River's history. He also became the youngest at 17 to play an official match for Argentina when he featured in their World Cup qualifier against Chile last week. Mastantuono had been linked to top European clubs such as Manchester United and Paris St Germain after a stunning free kick in River Plate's Superclasico win over Boca Juniors in April put him on the map. Mastantuono is Real's third close-season recruit after they signed Premier League defenders Dean Huijsen and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Trent Alexander-Arnold delivers Spanish speech at Real Madrid unveiling after £10m transfer from Liverpool

Trent Alexander-Arnold gave a surprise all-Spanish welcome speech during his unveiling as a Real Madrid player at the Estadio Bernabéu, marking the start of a new chapter after a 20-year association with Liverpool. Trent Alexander-Arnold speaking in fluent Spanish at his Real Madrid unveiling 🇪🇸 — Sky Sports News (@SkySportsNews) June 12, 2025 The 26-year-old right-back joined the Spanish giants in a £10m transfer ahead of the Club World Cup, having chosen not to renew his contract at Anfield. Although he was expected to join for free at the end of June, the early move underlines the long-term nature of his decision. Speaking at the ceremony, Alexander-Arnold said in Spanish: 'It's a dream come true, I'm very happy and proud to be here… I want to win many titles and play alongside the best players.' In the press conference that followed, he revealed he had been learning the language 'for a few months,' suggesting his move had been in the works well before it was publicly confirmed. The event featured a tribute montage of Alexander-Arnold's highlights at Liverpool, including his iconic assist against Barcelona in the 2019 Champions League. His contribution was vital in that campaign, which saw the Reds lift Europe's top trophy. Over 354 appearances, he also helped secure two Premier League titles, two Carabao Cups, an FA Cup, and a Club World Cup. As he turns the page on his Liverpool legacy, changes are already evident. He will wear number 12 for Real Madrid—swapping his famous 66 due to LaLiga rules—and will go by 'Trent' on the back of his shirt. Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez hailed his arrival, calling him 'a legend in the game at just 26' and praising his choice to join 'the best club in the world.' Alexander-Arnold could debut on 18 June against Al-Hilal at Miami's Hard Rock Stadium.

Mbappe ‘not bitter' about PSG's Champions League triumph

STUTTGART: France captain Kylian Mbappe said Saturday he is not bitter Paris Saint-Germain won the Champions League the year after his departure for Real Madrid. 'I didn't leave too soon; my story with PSG was over. I am not bitter; I had reached the end of the road,' Mbappe said in a press conference ahead of Sunday's Nations League third place match against Germany in Stuttgart. PSG crushed Inter Milan 5-0 to win the Champions League in Munich last Saturday, the first time the club has won the competition. 'I tried everything, and it was destiny that meant it had to happen without me,' said Mbappe. 'PSG winning the Champions League without me doesn't affect me. I was happy, I think they deserved it. Ballon d'Or 'should go to Champions League winner', says Ronaldo 'They've had so many years where they struggled. I've been there too; I've played in every Champions League stage in Paris except for the victory. 'They're the best team in Europe. 'I don't remember seeing a team win 5-0 in a major final.' Mbappe has repeated his desire to win Europe's biggest club competition, but the closest the Paris-born forward got with his boyhood club was losing the final in 2020 to Bayern Munich. The 26-year-old moved to Madrid in the summer of 2024 hoping to lift the Champions League, but the Spanish giants crashed out in the quarter-finals of the competition to Arsenal in April. Real failed to win a trophy in the 2024-25 season, their first campaign without silverware in four years.
