UAE to assess higher education landscape
The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MoHESR) has partnered with Times Higher Education (THE), a global university rankings provider, to conduct an in-depth analysis of the UAE's higher education landscape.
The collaboration aligns with the Ministry's efforts to boost the global competitiveness of UAE-based universities in both education and scientific research, while enhancing the integration of higher education outcomes with national priorities.
The announcement coincided with Emirati Day for Education, which is held under the theme 'Education By Everyone, For Everyone', which aims to support the strategic transformation of the UAE's education sector and deepen its connection to human and community development.
Under this collaboration, THE will leverage its expertise to evaluate the performance of higher education institutions (HEIs), benchmark it against leading global universities, and identify key areas for growth and development. The analysis will provide insights that will help refine policies aimed at maximising the contribution of UAE-based HEIs to developing the nation's sustainable, knowledge-based economy.

The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research is committed to enhancing the efficiency and competitiveness of UAE-based higher education institutions, strengthening the UAE's position as a pioneering global hub for innovation and cutting-edge research and future sciences.'
Dr. Hassan AlMheiri added, 'Our partnership with THE will enable us to assess the strengths and areas for improvement across our HEIs, ensuring they are even better positioned to produce world-class graduates. This will contribute to enhancing the national education system in a way that supports societal needs while keeping pace with future requirements.'
The project will be implemented across five phases. In the first phase, Nationwide Engagement, representatives of participating universities will attend training sessions to understand THE's ranking methodology and data submission processes. In the Data Submission and Quality Assurance phase, THE will collect data related to up to 11 subjects for a specific academic year for global benchmarking analysis. In phase three, Simulation and Rankings Production, THE will evaluate UAE-based universities based on their current performance and compare them to their peers.
After that, THE will move to phase four, Higher Education Landscape Analysis, where it will review local and federal institutional strategies, policies, and initiatives to assess their alignment with its World University Rankings metrics. In the final phase, THE will conduct International Peer Benchmarking against top-tier universities.

Participating universities will understand their position within the UAE higher education sector and receive suggestions for improvement as well as a detailed metrics-level ranking performance analysis report.
THE will lead engaging sessions with stakeholders across academia and government, and conduct masterclasses to train universities on the data submission and ranking methodologies. The initiative will culminate in the formulation of actionable strategies to take the UAE's higher education sector to new heights.

Held under the theme ' Environmental Law in the Digital Age', the conference will explore how digital transformation, artificial intelligence, and emerging technologies are reshaping the teaching, research, practice, and implementation of environmental law and policy in the MENA region. This edition marks the first time the conference will take place in the UAE, providing a vital forum for educators, university instructors, researchers and practitioners with expertise in environmental law and policy, as well as computer and data science, to collaborate on strengthening legal education and advancing sustainability development. As part of the upcoming conference, SUAD invites scholars, practitioners and educators to submit abstracts that explore the intersection of environmental law and digital innovation, and align with one or more of the conference themes, which include: Teaching and practicing environmental law in the MENA region in the face of the digital transition; The potential of digital technologies to enhance the integration of environmental considerations into business practices; Legal pathways to harness the power of digital technology for sustainability; The regulation of emerging technological risks; and The legal status and regime of environmental data. Submissions can take a regional, national, or comparative perspective, and may be theoretical, empirical, or interdisciplinary in nature. Abstracts are required to be between 500 and 700 words, and include the subject matter, key questions, methodology, and expected outcomes of the proposed paper, along with the author's professional and institutional affiliation details. The deadline for abstract submission is 15th July 2025. Selected authors will be notified by 15th September 2025 and invited to submit full drafts of their papers by 15th December 2025. Revised versions will be presented at the conference, and final papers may be considered for publication in a journal special issue or edited volume. Sharjah Research, Technology and Innovation Park board unveils strategy to build on phenomenal growth
Sharjah, UAE – In a high-level meeting chaired by Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi, the Board of Directors of the Sharjah Research, Technology and Innovation Park (SRTIP) in its 4th session set the stage for the next phase of growth, building on past year's phenomenal achievements that have made it one of the region's fastest growth technology parks. The meeting, hosted at the iconic headquarters of BEEAH Group, brought together industry, academic, and government stakeholders committed to reinforcing Sharjah's position as a leading regional hub for innovation. Opening the session, Sheikha Bodour extended her gratitude to board members and stressed the importance of building robust partnerships across sectors. 'SRTIP stands as a national model for innovation, where the synergy between research, industry, and policy continues to unlock transformative opportunities. Oceans face unprecedented challenges, says UAE Climate Minister
The health of the world's oceans is at serious risk warned Dr Amna Al Dahak, Minister of Climate Change and Environment. The minister was making her comments on World Oceans Day, June 8. The UAE is committed to protecting ocean ecosystems and enhancing their sustainability as a vital resource at both the national and global levels, she was quoted by state news agency Wam as saying. 'Covering more than 70 per cent of the Earth's surface, our oceans are undeniably essential to human lives and livelihoods,' said Dr Al Dahak. 'They are the lifeblood of our planet, regulating our climate, providing sustenance, and supporting countless ecosystems. 'We recognise, however, that our oceans face unprecedented challenges. From the impacts of climate change, evidenced by coral bleaching and rising sea levels, to the pressures of unsustainable fishing practices, the health of our oceans is at risk.' The UN has said that urgent action needs to be taken to address the harm being done to oceans, with 90 per cent of big fish populations depleted, and 50 per cent of coral reefs destroyed. Earlier this year, The National reported how Sylvia Earle, one of the world's most famous oceanographers and marine biologists, had raised the alarm over the threat posed to ocean ecosystems by climate change and overfishing. She said the world is 'perilously close' to tipping the balance of ocean life. 'As a nation deeply connected to the sea, we understand the urgency of these challenges and are committed to leading the way in finding solutions,' said Dr Al Dahak. 'We recognise the responsibility we have to safeguard these resources for future generations, and we are actively implementing strategies to mitigate these threats and restore the health of our marine ecosystems.' The UN states the ocean is key to the global economy with an estimated 40 million people being employed by ocean-based industries by 2030. Oceans also produce at least 50 per cent of the planet's oxygen. They also absorb about 30 per cent of carbon dioxide produced by humans, buffering the impacts of global warming. Dr Al Dahak highlighted the efforts being made by the UAE as examples of its commitment to tackling the issue both regionally and globally. 'Our efforts in mangrove preservation and coral rehabilitation have been highly successful. Work is under way on our coral rehabilitation project to outplant more than four million coral colonies in the emirate's waters by 2030,' she said. 'We are also working to achieve our 100 million mangrove plantation target by 2030. These are goals that we must all work together to achieve. 'Our commitment extends beyond our national waters. The UAE is proud to be the first nation in the Middle East to join the 100 Per Cent Alliance, a UN initiative by the High-Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy, calling on coastal states to commit to sustainable management of all ocean areas under their jurisdiction.'
