Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi to host 7th ASSELLMU Conference
SUAD to provide a regional platform for advancing sustainability, technology, and legal education in the MENA region

United Arab Emirates- Abu Dhabi - Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi (SUAD) is delighted to announce that it will host the 7th Scientific Conference of the Association of Environmental Law Lecturers in Middle East and North African Universities (ASSELLMU) from 9th to 10th February 2026.
Held under the theme ' Environmental Law in the Digital Age', the conference will explore how digital transformation, artificial intelligence, and emerging technologies are reshaping the teaching, research, practice, and implementation of environmental law and policy in the MENA region.
This edition marks the first time the conference will take place in the UAE, providing a vital forum for educators, university instructors, researchers and practitioners with expertise in environmental law and policy, as well as computer and data science, to collaborate on strengthening legal education and advancing sustainability development.
As part of the upcoming conference, SUAD invites scholars, practitioners and educators to submit abstracts that explore the intersection of environmental law and digital innovation, and align with one or more of the conference themes, which include: Teaching and practicing environmental law in the MENA region in the face of the digital transition; The potential of digital technologies to enhance the integration of environmental considerations into business practices; Legal pathways to harness the power of digital technology for sustainability; The regulation of emerging technological risks; and The legal status and regime of environmental data.
Submissions can take a regional, national, or comparative perspective, and may be theoretical, empirical, or interdisciplinary in nature. Abstracts are required to be between 500 and 700 words, and include the subject matter, key questions, methodology, and expected outcomes of the proposed paper, along with the author's professional and institutional affiliation details.
The deadline for abstract submission is 15th July 2025. Selected authors will be notified by 15th September 2025 and invited to submit full drafts of their papers by 15th December 2025. Revised versions will be presented at the conference, and final papers may be considered for publication in a journal special issue or edited volume.

The upcoming 2026 edition builds on the success of previous ASSELLMU conferences hosted in Doha, Settat, Amman, Sohar, and Riyadh, and is expected to attract participation from leading academic institutions, civil society, government bodies, and private sector stakeholders.
As the world approaches the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals deadline, ASSELLMU aims to examine how legal systems can adapt to support innovation and environmental protection across sectors including health, energy, water, food, culture and tourism, clean technology, trade, investments, and more.

Sharjah Research, Technology and Innovation Park board unveils strategy to build on phenomenal growth
Sharjah, UAE – In a high-level meeting chaired by Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi, the Board of Directors of the Sharjah Research, Technology and Innovation Park (SRTIP) in its 4th session set the stage for the next phase of growth, building on past year's phenomenal achievements that have made it one of the region's fastest growth technology parks. The meeting, hosted at the iconic headquarters of BEEAH Group, brought together industry, academic, and government stakeholders committed to reinforcing Sharjah's position as a leading regional hub for innovation. Opening the session, Sheikha Bodour extended her gratitude to board members and stressed the importance of building robust partnerships across sectors. 'SRTIP stands as a national model for innovation, where the synergy between research, industry, and policy continues to unlock transformative opportunities. Our shared mission is to deliver impactful outcomes in sectors that matter most to the future of our society—healthcare, mobility, sustainability, and manufacturing,' she noted. Driving Key Projects and Strategic Outlook SRTIP CEO Hussain Al Mahmoudi presented highlights of 2024, showcasing progress in major projects, business development, and further expansion. He outlined the outlook for 2025 with a renewed focus on infrastructure readiness, tenant growth, and attracting new innovation-driven enterprises. Master Planning and Sectoral Innovation in Focus A detailed review of the Park's masterplan and leasing strategies was presented by senior members of the management team. Updates were shared on the progression of Phase 1 clusters, key land allocations for the SOTI initiative, and commercial partnerships like Base39. Sector-specific innovation efforts in healthcare, advanced manufacturing, sustainability, and mobility were spotlighted during dedicated sessions, including projections for business growth and key milestones. A roadmap for enhancing ecosystem dynamics through deeper academic engagement with institutions such as AUS and UOS, was presented, alongside policies to attract talent and incentivize innovation. Brand & Digital Transformation The team also presented updates on brand visibility, digital transformation milestones, and SoiLab's role in driving innovation through prototyping and SME engagement. In an exclusive interview with Arabian Business Dr. Martin Visbeck, CEO of OceanQuest outlined the foundation's vision for inclusive, technologically driven exploration and its unique role in shaping the future of ocean science through global partnerships and local empowerment. A new era of ocean discovery 'OceanQuest was created to explore the unknown — not just for science, but for humanity,' said Dr. Visbeck. Collaboration across the global south At the heart of OceanQuest's model is a commitment to equitable global collaboration, with a particular focus on the Global South. The foundation has prioritized early partnerships in: Brazil, working with local institutions to study the Vitória-Trindade Seamount Chain and engage early-career researchers across Latin America. South Africa, building on the success of the Around Africa Expedition by expanding cooperation to neighbouring countries including Mozambique, Tanzania, and Madagascar. Lessons from the around Africa expedition OceanQuest's first major initiative, the Around Africa Expedition with OceanX, provided valuable insights. Highlights included: African scientific leadership, with regional scientists serving as chief scientists aboard the OceanXplorer vessel. Collaborative research, producing high-quality data and discovering previously undocumented marine life. Training over 30 ECOPs through floating labs — with more than 150 applicants underscoring growing demand for inclusive deep-sea training. Dr. Visbeck confirmed that the foundation will advocate for greater attention to seamounts and deep-ocean ecosystems in global marine science agendas. With global attention increasingly focused on SDG 14 (Life Below Water) and the ratification of new ocean governance frameworks like BBNJ, Dr. Visbeck believes now is the perfect moment for a deep-ocean foundation like OceanQuest.
