North Korea doesn't want foreigners in their new seaside resort, here's why
The South Korean media has dubbed the Wonsan-Kalma Coastal Tourist Zone as 'North Korea's Waikiki' which appears to be lined with high-rise hotels and waterparks. The report added that the sprawling seaside resort can purportedly accommodate some 20,000 people.
However, in a statement posted on an official website this week, the North Korea's National Tourism Administration said "foreign tourists are temporarily not being accepted". They didn't prove any details regarding this update.
During his early years in power, Kim Jong Un had shown a keen interest in developing North Korea's tourism industry and the coastal resort area was a particular focus.
During construction of the facilities Kim Jong Un often visited the site to oversee progress on a project that features about 7,000 guest rooms in luxury hotels and private villas, an outdoor waterpark and an airport, according to state media.
Quoting analysts, the report said that the opening of the beach resort may be termed as "one of the greatest successes this year" by North Korea and Kim may build more large-scale tourist zones "in the shortest time possible".
The report said that in 2024, North Korea permitted Russian tourists to return for the first time since the pandemic, and Western tour operators briefly returned in February 2025.
Meanwhile, South Korea's unification ministry expects the international tourism to the new resort was "likely to remain small in scale", citing the limited capacity of available flights.
Last week, Kim held talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Wonsan and offered Russia his full and "unconditional" support for its war in Ukraine, KCNA reported.
Reportedly, Lavrov hailed the seaside project as a "good tourist attraction" and expected it may become popular among both local and Russian visitors looking for new destinations.
Also, Russia announced that it would begin twice-a-week flights between Moscow and Pyongyang.

Musk says Tesla, Samsung sign $16.5 billion chip supply deal
Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the U.S. automaker had signed a $16.5 billion deal to source chips from Samsung Electronics , a move expected to bolster the South Korean tech giant's loss-making contract manufacturing business. Samsung's shares jumped as much as 6.8 per cent to their highest since September last year after news of the deal. Tesla shares were up 1.9 per cent in U.S. premarket trading. Musk said Samsung's new chip factory in Taylor, Texas will make Tesla's next-generation AI6 chip, potentially re-energizing the project that has faced long delays amid Samsung's difficulties in retaining and attracting major clients. "Samsung agreed to allow Tesla to assist in maximizing manufacturing efficiency. This is a critical point, as I will walk the line personally to accelerate the pace of progress. And the fab is conveniently located not far from my house," Musk said in a post on X on Monday. "The $16.5B number is just the bare minimum. Actual output is likely to be several times higher," he said in another post. According to a senior analyst at NH Investment & Securities, Ryu Young-ho, Samsung's Taylor fab "so far had virtually no customers, so this order is quite meaningful". In October, Reuters reported that Samsung had postponed taking deliveries of ASML chipmaking equipment for its Texas factory as it had not yet won any major customers for the project. It has already delayed the plant's operational start to 2026. Potential product timeline While no timeline was provided for AI6 chip production, Musk has previously said that next-generation AI5 chips will be produced at the end of 2026, suggesting AI6 would follow. Lee Dong-ju, an analyst at SK Securities, expects production in 2027 or 2028, but Tesla has a history of missing its targets. Samsung currently makes Tesla's AI4 chips, which power its Full Self-Driving driver assistant system, while TSMC is slated to make the AI5, initially in Taiwan and then Arizona, Musk has said. Samsung, the world's top memory chip maker, also produces logic chips designed by customers through its foundry business. The Texas project is central to Samsung Chairman Jay Y. Lee's strategy to expand beyond its bread-and-butter memory chips into contract chip manufacturing. It holds just 8 per cent of the global foundry market, far behind industry leader TSMC, which has a 67 per cent share, data from market researcher Trendforce show. Samsung had earlier announced the $16.5 billion chip supply deal without naming the client, saying the customer had requested confidentiality about the details of the deal, which will run through the end of 2033. Three sources briefed about the matter told Reuters that Tesla was the customer for the deal. Help Samsung's foundry business The deal with Tesla comes as Samsung, which is due to report its earnings on Thursday, faces mounting pressure in the race to produce artificial intelligence chips, where it trails rivals such as TSMC and SK Hynix. This lag has weighed heavily on its profit and share price. Earlier this month, Samsung projected a 56 per cent drop in second-quarter operating profit, partly due to widening losses of its foundry business. Pak Yuak, an analyst at Kiwoom Securities, said the deal would help reduce losses at Samsung's foundry business, which he estimates exceeded 5 trillion won ($3.6 billion) in the first half of the year. Analysts say Samsung has struggled to retain key clients, with many defecting to TSMC for advanced chips, underscoring technological challenges the firm faces in the race to stay relevant in the capital intensive business. TSMC counts Apple, Nvidia and Qualcomm among its customers. It is not clear whether the Samsung-Tesla deal is related to ongoing trade talks between South Korea and the United States. Seoul is seeking U.S. partnerships in chips and shipbuilding amid last-ditch efforts to reach a trade deal to eliminate or reduce potential 25 per cent U.S. tariffs.

Indian envoy to UK responds to criticism over purchase of Russian oil: 'Can't switch off its economy'
Over the past month, India, along with China and Brazil, has been at the centre of criticism from the West, mainly the US, for its purchase of Russian oil.(PTI) As the war in Ukraine rages on, several Western countries, led by the United States, have called out India and other nations for their purchase of Russian oil and other trade practices. In response to this criticism, Indian high commissioner to the UK said a country 'can't just switch off its economy'. Speaking to UK-based Times Radio last week, the Indian envoy Vikram K Doraiswami stated that while the West is criticising India for buying Russian oil, many European countries "continue to buy rare earth mineral from the same countries it does not want India to buy from." "Europe continues to buy rare earths from the same country they don't want India to buy oil from. You don't think that's a little odd?" he asked the journalist. The envoy further explained that India and Russia's "energy relationship" only started after New Delhi was displaced from other sources. "So we've been displaced out of the energy market largely, and the costs have gone up. We are the third-largest consumer of energy in the world. We import over 80% of our product. What would you have us do? Switch off our economy," said Doraiswami. "We also see around us relationships that other countries maintain for their own convenience with countries that are a source of difficulty for us. Do we ask you to come up with a little test of loyalty?" he said, adding that many Western nations did not sell India weapons, but would sell them to neighbouring countries, which would then use the same weapons to attack India. India slammed for close ties with Russia Over the past month, India, along with China and Brazil, has been at the centre of criticism from the West, mainly the US, for its purchase of Russian oil. US president Donald Trump has warned India and other BRICS nations of additional tariffs if the countries did not stop its trade with Russia. A similar warning was echoed by NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, who warned of 100 percent tariffs against India, China and Brazil if they did not pressure Russia to arrive at a ceasefire deal with Ukraine in 50 days. US senator and Trump aide Lindsey Graham has also been a vocal critic of India's ties with Russia and warned New Delhi, China and others of 'stern tariffs' from Trump. 'Trump is going to impose tariffs on people that buy Russian oil: China, India, and Brazil. Those three countries buy about 80 per cent of cheap Russian oil, and that's what keeps (Vladimir) Putin's war machine going. So, President Trump is going to put a 100 per cent tariff on all those countries, punishing them for helping Putin,' Graham told FOX News.
