Prof Mihir Mishra appointed member of OPSC; OSSC secures full strength
BHUBANESWAR: The state government on Tuesday appointed Prof Mihir Prasad Mishra, principal of SCS (Autonomous) College, Puri, as member, Odisha Public Service Commission (OPSC) and three others as members of Odisha Staff Selection Commission (OSSC).
With the appointment of Mishra, OPSC will now have three members leaving two posts vacant. The commission is a six-member body including chairman. Retired IPS officer Arun Sarangi is the current chairman and the two other members are Sarita Supakar and Shyama Bhakta Mishra. A notification issued by the General Administration department said Prof Mishra will have a term of six years from the date he joins office or until he attains the age of 62 years, whichever is earlier.
Director, Census Operations, Udaya Narayan Das, retired IAS officer Sudhakar Burgi and former professor in department of English of Berhampur University Shruti Das have been appointed as members of the Odisha Staff Selection Commission.

School land misuse case: Ludhiana court grants interim bail to Ashu, orders him to join probe
A court in Ludhiana Friday granted interim bail to Congress leader Bharat Bhushan Ashu but directed him to join the investigation in the school land misuse case in which he was issued summons Thursday by the Punjab Vigilance Bureau, leading to a political uproar. Ashu is Congress candidate for June 19 bypoll to Ludhiana West Assembly seat that he has represented twice in the past. 'The applicant (Ashu) was not named in the FIR, he has been subsequently named. The case of the prosecution is based on documentary evidence. So, the applicant is directed to join the investigation as and when called by the Investigating Officer and in the event of his arrest, the applicant shall be released on interim bail by the Arresting/Investigating officer,' read the order issued by court of additional sessions judge Jaspinder Singh. The court fixed June 11 as next date hearing. Ashu's counsel Vijay Mahendru said the Congress leader had submitted in the court that he was falsely implicated in the case 'only to sabotage his election campaign.' It was submitted in the court that the FIR in the case was registered on January 8, 2025 at Division Number 5 police station of Ludhiana on the complaint of Executive Officer, Ludhiana Improvement Trust (LIT) for action against management committee of New Senior Secondary School. It was alleged that under the scheme of LIT, 4.7 acres of land in Sarabha Nagar was allotted to the committee for running a senior secondary school. As per the agreement, the land could not be used for any other purpose. However, in March 1971, a complaint was received from local residents that a college was being constructed at the site. However, as per the agreement, only school could be constructed on it Thereafter, a letter was issued to stop the construction of the college. Further, in 2023, several other complaints were received that private playway schools and other shops/businesses were running on the allotted land. After an inquiry, the current FIR was registered under the sections 420, 120-B, 467, 468, 471 and 409 of IPC against management committee members. Row over TMC MLA's remarks on Operation Sindoor; party distances itself
Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Narendranath Chakraborty has sparked a controversy by allegedly saying that Operation Sindoor was '…warmongering initiated by the BJP.' The BJP minority cell filed an FIR against Chakraborty, who represents the Pandabeswar seat in Paschim Bardhaman district, for his remarks, and alleged that the TMC legislator belittled the valour of the armed forces. TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said Chakaraborty's remarks are 'his personal statements' and that the ruling party 'does not support it.' Despite repeated attempts to contact him, Chakraborty was unavailable for comment. BJP state President Sukanta Majumdar took to X to hit out at Chakraborty over his comments, saying, 'The outrageous and condemnable remarks made by Pandabeswar's TMC MLA Narendranath Chakraborty clearly reveals the extent to which the Trinamool Congress is trying to spread anti-national venom in West Bengal.' A BJP leader from the Asansol belt, Jitendra Tiwari, said, 'If he (Chakraborty) is so sympathetic towards Pakistan, it's better for him to go there, buy land and stay there. Who is David Huerta? SEIU California President arrested during ICE raid in Los Angeles, video surfaces
David Huerta, President of SEIU California, was injured and arrested during an ICE raid in Los Angeles on Friday, according to a statement released by the union. SEIU California says Huerta was detained while 'exercising his First Amendment right to observe and document law enforcement activity.' Tia Orr, Executive Director of SEIU California, said, 'SEIU California members call for the immediate release of our President, David Huerta, who was injured and detained at the site of one of today's ICE raids in Los Angeles. He is now receiving medical attention while in custody.' Orr continued, 'We are proud of President Huerta's righteous participation as a community observer, in keeping with his long history of advocating for immigrant workers and with the highest values of our movement: standing up to injustice, regardless of personal risk or the power of those perpetrating it.'
