Shrewsbury Parkway: Council explores funding options for station
A council is looking into options for funding a new railway station.Shropshire Council first announced plans for a potential new station - called Shrewsbury Parkway - in January.It would sit on the east side of the town, aiming to reduce traffic at the main station.Now, the authority said it was working with a new rail operator, Wrexham, Shropshire and Midlands Railway (WSMR) and consultancy business SLC Rail, to investigate the feasibility and private funding options for the new station.
The plans are part of a wider transport scheme for the town, called Shrewsbury Moves, a 10-year plan to transform movement across the town.The proposals were developed by Shropshire Council, Shrewsbury Town Council and Shrewsbury Business Improvement District.WSMR is also currently behind plans to introduce a direct train service between Wrexham, Shrewsbury and London.
"This is great news and an important first step forward for a parkway station that would provide a further boost for Shrewsbury and its transport infrastructure and attract the investment needed to help make our town an even better place for people to come to, whether to visit, live or work," said Dave Parry, chair of the Big Town Plan partnership.

STRUGGLING families can get £250 in cash or free fridges, freezers and washing machines delivered to their doorsteps. The help comes as part of the government's Household Support Fund (HSF) - a huge £742 million fund available to councils across England. 2 2 Enfield Council has bagged £5 million from the HSF to support residents between April 2025 and March 2026. Support includes free white goods - like fridges, freezers, washing machines and cookers - with home delivery for families in need. Households can also get a leg-up on essential costs like food, energy and water bills, as well as support covering expenses like broadband, phone bills and clothes. The help is usually given to those who are on a low income, are on benefits or are classed as vulnerable. Families deemed eligible meet the following criteria, as per the town's council's website. To claim the money, individuals are told to provide an explanation for the hardship they are experiencing and for the reason that they are unable to cover expenses. Without this information, applications will be rejected. The following proof is also required: Evidence of all household members' income A copy of a recent bank statement A utility bill Families can get FREE washing machines, fridges and kids' beds or £200 payments this summer – and you can apply now There is only one award per household. Once approved, payments for essentials will enter the applicant's bank account within 10 days. The council warns that application windows may close depending on demand. It comes as Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council is also lending hard-up households a helping hand through the HSF. Thousands of families will be able to receive free washing machines, fridges and kids' beds or £200 towards the cost of energy. People must meet the following criteria to qualify: Single Adult in Work: Their household income must be below £26,057 (before tax and National Insurance) Two or More Adults in Work: Their household income must be below £38,870 (before tax and National Insurance) Their household savings must be under £2,000 If they're a pensioner, their savings must be below £16,000 But it's not just through HSF that families can receive help covering the cost of white goods. Some councils are running schemes. Norfolk County Council has a Client Hardship Service (CHS) offering second-hand and new appliances to hard-up households. Those who will qualify have an age of 16 or older, live in Norfolk and are claiming a means-tested benefit like Universal Credit or Pension Credit. Meanwhile, Manchester City Council provides those resettling or moving out of temporary accommodation with basic furniture and white goods. Network Rail urged to resolve Wrexham-London rail concerns

The Labour-run authority is also lobbying for the direct trains to stop at Wellington station and has asked Wrexham, Shropshire and Midlands Railway to confirm it will be a stop on the Carter, the leader of Telford and Wrekin Council, said: "This is a major opportunity to reconnect our borough with the capital, boost our economy, and offer people a real alternative to car travel."The service, which received support from the Prime Minister last month, would also serve passengers in Wrexham, Gobowen, Shrewsbury, Walsall and would replace a service which ceased operating in June 2024. New nuclear development plans announced for Cumbria
The Prime Minister has announced plans which could see nuclear power generation return to West Cumbria. Sir Keir Starmer confirmed that land at Moorside, near Sellafield, will be freed up and leased to pave the way for a new nuclear power plant. Josh MacAlister, MP for Whitehaven and Workington said: "I made a promise at the General Election to do everything possible to unlock land at Moorside for new nuclear. "Some people thought it was a dead-end or a cynical promise that would be broken after the election. It hasn't been easy, but we've done it. 'Having the Prime Minister's backing is a real vote of confidence in West Cumbria and our people and I know we will rise to the challenge. 'Now we have the government behind us and an agreement on use of the land we can motor ahead to deliver Pioneer Park at pace. I can't promise we will get new nuclear, but unlocking this land gives us our best chance since the collapse of NuGen. 'What I can promise is I will do everything in my power to secure our nuclear future. We deserve nothing less." Josh MacAlister MP is now set to host a public meeting to discuss plans for new nuclear in West Cumbria. Cllr Mark Fryer, Leader of Cumberland Council, said: 'A clean energy development at Moorside is great news for Cumberland and West Cumbria in particular, as it would help grow and diversify our future economy. 'The main driver for me is generating enough power at Moorside, by whatever means, to attract industry and technology to Cumberland that will sustain our economy and create jobs for west Cumbrians long after the inevitable downturn in decommissioning at Sellafield. 'While I am open to all clean energy developments that benefit our community, new nuclear build, in the form of Small Modular Reactors, would unquestionably provide us with the most power capacity for the size of land being made available and give us our best chance of achieving our ultimate goal of attracting industry, technology and jobs into our community. 'The Council is fully committed to working with the NDA to understand how we can deliver maximum value and benefit from the land at Moorside for the local community.'
