Glenn Maxwell's timely reminder as Aussie masterclass leaves cricket world in awe
South Africa set the Aussies a competitive victory target of 173 after game two centurion Dewald Brevis once again starred for the Proteas with a half century. The power-hitting South African clubbed 53 runs off just 26 balls, with Rassie van der Dussen adding an unbeaten 38 (off 26) as the Proteas reached 7-172 off their 20 overs.
Aussie quick Aaron Hardie felt the brunt of the latest onslaught from Brevis, who clear the ropes six times in his latest heroics for South Africa. Brevis signalled his intent early by pulling Ben Dwarshuis (0-37) onto the Cazalys Stadium roof.
But it was in the 10th over against Hardie when the Proteas batter went into overdrive. Brevis hit four consecutive sixes after starting the over slowly. The first six went over cover and bounced onto the roof and out of the stadium.
His next six went straight down the ground and saw a fan crash into the boundary fence trying to take a catch. The next Hardie delivery was also sent straight down the ground, before the fourth was cut over cover. Brevis took 27 runs from that one Hardie over to leave South Africa well placed at 3-96 after 10 overs and 3-108 after 11.
But his innings came undone after a sensational diving catch from Maxwell in the deep that removed the danger man. Van der Dussen's late cameo ensured it would be a tricky total for the Aussies to chase, despite the visitors being restricted to 62 runs from the final 8.2 overs. Nathan Ellis (3-31) and leg spinner Adam Zampa (2-24) were the pick of the Aussie bowlers.
The home side were cruising in their chase at 2-83 after Travis Head (19) and Josh Inglis both went cheaply. Mitch Marsh's 54 off 37 balls had the Aussies in good shape until disaster struck. Australia lost 4-37 to put the contest firmly back in the balance, with Cameron Green (9), Tim David (17) and Hardie (1) all sent packing after Kwena Maphaka grabbed the prized wicket of Aussie skipper Marsh.
Glenn Maxwell stands tall in match-winning knock for Aussies
But it set the stage for the latest match-winning display from Maxwell, whose recent form raised some questions around his T20 future for Australia. Maxwell already announced his retirement from ODI cricket this year, and made scores of just one and 16 in the first two games, but exploded to life when Australia needed him the most.
Needing 27 runs off the final three overs, a chaotic beamer from paceman Kagiso Rabada gave Maxwell a free hit in the 18th over that proved a major turning point. He belted the free hit for six and whittled the equation down to 12 runs needed from 12 balls, with four wickets in hand.
More drama followed when Corbin Bosch (3-26) dismissed Dwarshuis and Ellis in consecutive deliveries to catapult South Africa back into the clash. Ten runs were needed off the final over, and it became four runs required off the last two balls. But with victory at his fingertips, Maxwell lashed a trademark reverse slog off Lungi Ngidi for four to seal an incredible victory with one ball to spare.

Huge boost for Scott Boland as Aussie great snubs Nathan Lyon
"It was a little bit nerve wracking," Maxwell said. "We were down to two wickets and I knew I had to do the majority of the striking. It was nice to get a couple out of the middle right near the end.
"We've had a great run with this T20 group, so to have another series win against a quality opposition in South Africa is great for our confidence heading forward. I think there's another 13 or 14 internationals before the T20 World Cup, and we're building something really nicely at the moment in this group."
This man is a big match player😀

Reds end Brewers' franchise-record, 14-game winning streak on Hays' bases-loaded hit in the 10th
CINCINNATI (AP) — Austin Hays' single with the bases loaded in the 10th inning gave the Cincinnati Reds a 3-2 victory over Milwaukee on Sunday, ending the Brewers' franchise-record winning streak at 14 games. Milwaukee had barely pulled out the previous two games in Cincinnati for its longest streak ever within one season and the longest in the majors since the St. Louis Cardinals won 17 straight from Sept. 11 to Sept. 28, 2021. This time, Spencer Steer's sacrifice bunt in the 10th advanced designated runner TJ Friedl to third. After intentional walks to Elly De La Cruz and Will Benson loaded the bases, Hays laced a single to down the third-base line for his second career walk-off hit. Milwaukee, which overcame a seven-run deficit on Friday and rallied to win in 14 innings Saturday, nearly came back for another win. William Contreras hit his 13th home run of the season, a two-run shot off Reds closer Emilio Pagan, to put Milwaukee ahead 2-1 in the ninth. But the Reds tied it when Benson reached on a fielding error by shortstop Joey Ortiz and later scored on Jose Trevino's single. The first-place Brewers fell to 53-17 in their last 70 games. The game was scoreless through six innings with Reds left-hander Andrew Abbott and Brewers lefty Jose Quintana allowing a combined six hits with 11 strikeouts. Cincinnati scored the game's first run when Hays led off the seventh with a double and scored on Trevino's sacrifice fly to the wall in center. Graham Ashcraft (7-4) earned the win for Cincinnati. Grant Anderson (2-4) took the loss. Key moment In the top of the 10th inning, designated runner Andrew Vaughn was thrown out at third base trying to advance on Blake Perkins' bunt. Key stat The Reds are the only team that has not been swept in a series this season. Their 40 series without a sweep is the longest in franchise history, eclipsing the 1970 team which went 32 straight series. It's the seventh time the Reds have won the final game of a series to avoid being swept. Up next Brewers RHP Freddy Peralta (14-5, 2.90) will start Monday against the Cubs at Wrigley Field. RHP Brady Singer (10-9, 4.31) will start Monday for the Reds against the Angels in Anaheim. ___ AP MLB:

Injured Wallabies Slipper and Pietsch ruled out of second test against South Africa
JOHANNESBURG (AP) — Australia prop James Slipper and winger Dylan Pietsch were ruled out of the second Rugby Championship test against South Africa in a double blow to the Wallabies' hopes on Sunday. Slipper reported concussion symptoms after the shock 38-22 win over the Springboks on Saturday in Johannesburg and failed a head injury check. Pietsch broke his jaw in a first-half tackle, not long after scoring Australia's first try. They returned home alongside flyhalf Ben Donaldson, whose adductor strain made him unavailable for the first test. Utility back Hamish Stewart has joined the Wallabies in Johannesburg, and winger Filipo Daugunu and prop Rhys van Nek will catch up with the squad in Cape Town, site of the second test on Saturday. No. 8 and captain Harry Wilson was forced from the field after a knee injury but Rugby Australia said he was walking more comfortably and staying in the republic. The injury to Slipper, the Wallabies' most capped player, means Aidan Ross could make his test debut for Australia three years after his sole test for New Zealand. Tom Robertson was another loosehead option. Andrew Kellaway is expected to replace Pietsch in the No. 11 jersey, but the uncapped Corey Toole will vie with Daugunu and Josh Flook as cover. ___ AP rugby:
