City & Guilds London: 50,000 students to receive certifications each year
The announcement was made during a media briefing held upon the return of a high-level Pakistani delegation from London, led by Minister of State for Education, Ms Wajiha Qamar.
The delegation included Gulmina Bilal, Chairperson of the National Vocational and Technical Training Commission (NAVTTC), Ghulam Ali Mallah, Executive Director of IBCC, Amir Saadati, Executive Director of GEMS Middle East, and Hussain Shaikh, Global Head of Strategy GEMS Pakistan.
Speaking at the briefing, Minister Wajiha Qamar and NAVTTC Chairperson Gulmina Bilal stated that a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) had been signed to offer global-standard technical training to youth in Pakistan. This initiative is expected to create vast employment opportunities abroad and enhance the competitiveness of Pakistani professionals in the international labour market.
'Our goal is to empower Pakistani youth with skills that meet global standards,' said Gulmina Bilal. 'Through this agreement, 50,000 students will be trained annually with the collaboration of City & Guilds, enabling them to secure quality employment opportunities in Europe, the Middle East, and other regions.'
The agreement was formalized at the headquarters of City & Guilds in London, where the Pakistani delegation signed the MoU with City & Guilds CEO Ms Kirstie Donnelly.
Ms Bilal added that this partnership will revolutionise Pakistan's vocational education sector and align its skilled workforce with international benchmarks. 'We do not want our youth to be limited to the local job market. This collaboration is a game-changer, as it will grant global recognition to Pakistani certifications,' she said.
During the visit, the delegation also met with Lord Boateng and discussed bilateral cooperation on workforce mobility and skills development. Lord Boateng appreciated Pakistan's initiative and assured full support for future collaboration.
The foundation for this partnership was laid during the UK delegation's visit to NAVTTC in Islamabad in 2024, where Pakistan's vocational training potential was recognized. Subsequently, City & Guilds certification programs were launched in Pakistan through GEMS representation.
This agreement marks a major milestone in opening global employment doors for Pakistan's youth and promises to contribute significantly to the country's economic growth.

Pakistan grants first-ever ferry licence for routes to Iran, gulf countries
The Ministry of Maritime Affairs on Monday approved its first-ever ferry service licence to an international ferry operator, Sea Keepers, authorising the company to operate routes connecting Pakistan with Iran and Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, according to a statement. The approval followed a high-level meeting of the Licensing Committee, comprising officials from Maritime Affairs, Defence, Foreign Affairs, and Interior ministries, along with representatives from the Pakistan National Shipping Corporation and Port & Shipping authorities. Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, hailed the move as a historic step aligned with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's vision and Pakistan's National Maritime Policy. Gwadar Port: govt announces new shipping lines, ferry service to GCC He emphasised the opportunity this licence creates for boosting regional connectivity, religious tourism, and economic activity via sea routes. The new ferry service is expected to serve hundreds of thousands annually, particularly pilgrims travelling to Iran and Iraq, alongside workers and tourists bound for GCC states. The minister noted that the ferry service will alleviate pressure on land routes and reduce travel costs compared to air transport for the Pakistani diaspora and religious travellers. 'Initial operations will commence from the ports of Karachi and Gwadar using modern ferry vessels equipped with essential amenities to ensure safe, affordable travel. Expansion of routes and port calls is planned based on demand and bilateral agreements,' he added. This ferry service launch forms part of Pakistan's broader strategy to develop its blue economy, improve trade logistics, and promote maritime tourism, reflecting a renewed commitment to sustainable regional sea transport infrastructure, the minister stated.

Bangladesh seeks Pakistani coal, limestone to meet industrial demand in trade talks
In a bid to meet its growing industrial and energy demands, Bangladesh is seeking closer trade cooperation with Pakistan, particularly in securing raw materials such as coal and limestone. The development came during a meeting between Federal Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal Khan and Bangladesh's High Commissioner to Pakistan, Iqbal Hussain Khan, where both sides explored deeper bilateral cooperation in trade, energy, logistics, and industrial linkages, read a statement released by the Ministry of Commerce. During the meeting, High Commissioner Khan shared insights from his recent visits to Pakistan's industrial hubs, noting enthusiastic engagement from local business chambers. The federal minister emphasised the strategic potential of the relationship, stating: 'Through focused collaboration in energy, logistics and food security, Pakistan and Bangladesh can develop a transformative economic partnership that benefits our entire region.' The meeting concluded with commitments to establish sector-specific business linkages and streamline trade mechanisms in the coming months.
