Steelers GM on seventh-round rookie: 'We expect him to contribute sooner than later'

USA Today6 hours ago

The Steelers have high expectations for seventh-round rookie CB Donte Kent, as GM Omar Khan recently hinted at what's in store for the young corner.
On Saturday's episode of The Standard, Khan spoke highly of Kent's ability to contribute on both defense and special teams:
'Donte [Kent], we spent a significant amount of time studying his film, looking at his production — not only on the defensive side, but also on special teams,' Khan said. 'And the more we watched him, the more excited we got about him. Solid character. Again, another guy who's got a really good opportunity, and we expect him to contribute sooner rather than later.'
During Kent's time at Central Michigan, he set the school record for pass breakups with 47 and was also a dominant force in the punt return game as a senior — averaging 13.6 yards per return, including an incredible 68-yard return touchdown.
Fans should keep an eye on Kent at July's training camp, as the young defender's versatility will help him compete for a spot on the Steelers' 53-man roster.

Tyreek Hill speaks his mind on Dolphins teammate, Steelers trade target Jalen Ramsey

The Jalen Ramsey-to-Pittsburgh rumors had begun to simmer down — which is music to Tyreek Hill's ears. At Fanatics Fest, the Dolphins' All-Pro wide receiver made his desire to keep Ramsey in Miami known: 'I'm going to hang out with Ramsey next week, man,' Hill said. 'I'm going to get him back. Full-court press, I'm getting Ramsey back in a Dolphins jersey. I don't care what they say — it's tampering, whatever. We need Ramsey. He's a dog. He's one of the best corners in the league — great leader, great teammate too, though. That's what he doesn't get a lot of credit for … We just need him on the Dolphins, man.' On last Friday's episode of The Pat McAfee Show, insider Adam Schefter boldly claimed that 'Ramsey will get traded' and preferred a landing spot on the West Coast — clearly bad news for a potential Steelers trade. Will Hill's sales pitch to Ramsey work in Miami's favor, or will Pittsburgh give Steelers fans what they're asking for with a blockbuster trade? Former Seahawk says Steelers' DK Metcalf wanted a trade to Raiders

DK Metcalf is carrying the hopes of Steelers offense on his shoulders — but a former Seahawk claims he almost went to the Las Vegas Raiders instead of Pittsburgh. On a recent episode of Da Get Got Pod, former Seahawks Mike Robinson and Marshawn Lynch joked with Raiders HC Pete Carroll about his pursuit of Seattle's players this offseason. After Lynch teased that Carroll "tried to bring everybody up out that building," Robinson chimed in with Metcalf's supposed preference: "I know," Robinson said. "Remember, DK wanted to go there." Carroll served as the Seahawks' head coach from 2010 to 2023 — and wasted little time trading for his former Seattle QB Geno Smith after becoming the new Raiders head coach this offseason. It makes complete sense that Metcalf preferred a reunion with his former quarterback and head coach in Las Vegas, but the Steelers' "really aggressive" trade package for DK was likely stronger than anything the Raiders offered. Steelers Legend Joey Porter Sr. Reflects on Famous Incident with Ray Lewis: ‘I'm About to Wolverine Myself'

Former Pittsburgh Steelers outside linebacker Joey Porter Sr. cleared the air on the famous 'bus incident' with Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis in Week 1 of the 2003 season. Porter did not play in the game, as he was recovering from a gun shot wound, which occurred outside of a night club in Denver. Porter nearly suited up, however. 'I had just got show in Denver. This is Week 1, I have to miss the game. I'm in pregame warm up, Ray Lewis is out there and getting ready for the game, he's looking at me and talking directly to me. 'This is my house, we about to do boom, boom, do this, X, Y and Z. I looked around like, 'Shit, who we talking, too? I looked, I said, 'Damn it's just me out here. I'm like, man, you talking to me?' Advertisement 'So I start stretching. I'm like, 'Shit, (Rodgers Freyvogel) go get my gear.' You think I can't go play, I'm about to play today. Mind you my ass just got shot. I'm about to Wolverine myself. This hole in my body is no longer there,' Porter said on Cam Heyward's Not Just Football podcast. 'Joey you're not playing,'' Porter added while imitating Bill Cowher's voice. 'So now I'm so damn angry because Ray got me so gassed up.' The Steelers defeated the Ravens, 34-15, but the animosity between the two teams continued after the game. 'Plax and Corey Fuller are going at it. They're talking having a conversation. Ray come out and he sees Corey. He's like Corey, 'You good over there?' And I'm like … 'Nah, he ain't good, come and check on him,' Porter explained. 'Then he said, 'Nah man, I'm (going to) pray for you.' And then he got on the bus, and that shit made me mad. That's why I started walking toward the bus. I'm like you talked all that shit. Now don't sent me a prayer. Don't pray for me mother******. Advertisement 'And then they see me walking toward (the bus), and that's when they start the story, 'Oh, Joey got on the bus trying to fight Ray Lewis!' People who know the story, they know.' So there you have it, Porter did not actually go on the Ravens' team bus and try to fight Ray Lewis. Nevertheless, it sure is an entertaining story. There was nothing like the Steelers-Ravens rivalry in the 2000s.
