MGS a key force behind the Muziris project, says Satheesan
'I vividly remember his spirited arguments with fellow historians during the initial seminar on Muziris, held at North Paravur. He openly voiced his apprehensions, firmly stating that there was insufficient archaeological evidence to claim Pattanam as the ancient Muziris port,' Mr. Satheesan recalls.
M.G.S. Narayanan consistently argued that Pattanam was not Muziris, and criticised the Kerala Council for Historical Research (KCHR) for what he believed were historical inaccuracies in their identification. He advocated for the use of 'Mahodaya'—a historically grounded name , instead of the Eurocentric 'Muziris.'
According to him, it was Kodungalloor, the harbour town ruled by the Cheraman chiefs of ancient Tamizhakam, with their political center located inland at Karur, near modern-day Tiruchi, that truly held the identity of ancient Muziris.
Yet, despite his theoretical differences, M.G.S. Narayanan never allowed his opposition to cloud his commitment to the Muziris Heritage Project.
'He was convinced of the existence of a thriving ancient port at Pattanam, which had trade links with over 34 countries. He recognised the evidence of a vibrant port culture in the region, unearthed during excavations,' Mr. Satheesan said.
'It was this conviction that led him to participate in the seminar on Muziris, even as he used the platform to publicly air his objections. As the organiser, I had to navigate between divergent scholarly opinions, but he respected my position too,' Mr. Satheesan added.
He also recalled M.G.S. Narayanan's deep concern over the slow progress of the Muziris Heritage Project in the past decade. 'That indeed highlighted the historian's dedication to preserving Kerala's rich historical legacy,' noted Mr.Satheesan.

Sharing his Independence Day greetings, Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan said thousands of freedom fighters, known and unknown, shed their blood so that the country could gain independence. Secularism and socialism were the slogans they raised. The Independence Day was a reminder to everyone of the responsibility to uphold the values they fought for, he said. Many forces were trying to divide the people by observing Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, turning people against each other, and fuelling communal disharmony. 'Everyone should stand united against such forces.' Only when those who loved the country came together in the struggle to protect constitutional and democratic values could one do justice to the freedom fighters, Mr. Satheesan said.

State govt refuses to observe Partition event in universities
T'puram: State govt made it clear that Partition Horrors Remembrance Day wouldn't be observed in universities in the state as directed by the chancellor. Higher education minister R Bindu on Wednesday said universities wouldn't organise any programmes to observe this day and strict instructions were issued in this regard. Hence, state govt is of the view that such an issue should not be encouraged on the campuses of the state, she added. The minister said if the seeds of division were being sown in universities, it seemed unlikely that any conciliatory efforts would succeed in the future. Meanwhile, governor sent another letter to vice-chancellors regarding the observance, requesting detailed information about the events. Based on this, the respective universities have written to individual colleges regarding this. Opposition leader V D Satheesan said governor's suggestion to observe Partition Horrors Remembrance Day was a serious mistake. "Governor should not attempt to implement Sangh Parivar agenda of dividing the country. If implemented, the opposition will resist it. They have come up with a new tool called Partition Fear to divide the people," he alleged. "Governor's actions, which undermine the spirit of Independence Day celebrations, are anti-national and anti-democratic. Chief minister has expressed his protest. However, the chief minister should be ready to directly convey the protest of state govt and its people to governor," he added. LDF and UDF ratchet up their demand for Suresh Gopi to clarify voter list fraud accusations
As accusations of voter list fraud in the Thrissur Lok Sabha constituency in the 2024 general elections appeared to turn from a trickle into a torrent, the ruling front and the opposition in Kerala ratcheted up their demand for a public accounting from Union Minister of State for Tourism, Suresh Gopi, MP. Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] general secretary, M.A. Baby, dismissed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) former State president K. Surendran's averment that Mr. Gopi owed no explanation and the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) and opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) were grousing belatedly about Election Commission of India (ECI) officials in Thrissur stacking the odds in favour of the Union Minister. Speaking to reporters in New Delhi, Mr. Baby said: 'Belated reporting of a theft did not absolve the perpetrator of the crime.
