Soulja Boy arrested near his Melrose clothing shop on suspicion of felony weapons possession
Los Angeles police arrested the 35-year-old rap star, known for 'Crank That (Soulja Boy)' and 'Kiss Me Thru the Phone,' early Sunday morning on suspicion of being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, a police spokesperson confirmed to The Times. Soulja Boy — real name DeAndre Cortez Way — was arrested Sunday at around 2:50 a.m. near the intersection of Genesee Avenue and Melrose Avenue after police conducted a traffic stop. The rapper was arrested about five blocks west of his Melrose clothing store, SODMG Brand.
While investigating the vehicle, police identified Way as one of the passengers. Later that morning at around 6 a.m., the police booked the rapper into the jail at LAPD's Wilshire Division, according to the sheriff department's inmate database.
Additional information on what prompted the traffic stop and who else was in the vehicle was not immediately available, police said. A representative for Soulja Boy did not immediately respond Monday to The Times' request for comment.
A Chicago native and Grammy nominee, Soulja Boy rose to prominence in the early aughts, but in recent years has faced legal repercussions for his treatment of women in his inner circle.
In April 2023, a Santa Monica jury sided with his ex-girlfriend, who sued him in 2020 for assault, kidnapping and invasion of privacy, among other counts. Two years after that verdict, Soulja Boy was found liable for sexually assaulting and physically and emotionally abusing a former assistant.
In April, a Santa Monica jury found Soulja Boy to be liable after a three-week trial and decided he must pay the woman more than $4 million in compensatory damages. The rapper's lead defense attorney disagreed with the decision.
'We maintain that the evidence does not support the verdict. It is unfortunate that aspersions and misperceptions of a culture were allowed to influence the trial,' attorney Rickey Ivie said in April. 'Mr. Way fully intends to pursue his post-trial remedies and to fight for a just result in this case.'

The car, a Tesla, was stopped because it allegedly had tinted windows, prosecutors revealed in their charge evaluation worksheet obtained by Rolling Stone. '[Officers] discovered a firearm in the rear seat near a suspect. Both the suspect and the driver denied owning the firearm,' the worksheet said. Despite the denial, Way was booked on suspicion of being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. The rapper, 35, has a store for his SODMG clothing line on Melrose Avenue, near the location where he was arrested. He spent two nights in jail awaiting the charging decision. Way made headlines in April when a jury awarded one of his former girlfriends $4 million in damages for her claims he assaulted, sexually battered, and harassed her. Arrest made in Hollywood hit-and-run crash that left 37-year-old woman dead
After more than a month of investigation, Los Angeles police have announced an arrest in the deadly hit-and-run crash that left a 37-year-old woman dead in Hollywood in late June. The crash happened on June 29 at around 9 p.m., when Erika "Tilly" Edwards was struck by a Mercedes-Benz G Wagon in the 7500 block of W. Sunset Boulevard, police said at the time. Since then, police have continued their search for the suspect, which finally culminated in an arrest back on July 22, nearly a month after investigators first told CBS News Los Angeles that they believed they had a person if interest connected to the crash. He was identified by LAPD detectives as Davontay Robins on Wednesday. Police said that he was arrested at his home, which is not far from the scene of the crash. They said they made the connection by using security camera footage in the area and after they received an anonymous tip. Investigators located the G Wagon at a body shop, which they believe Robins brought the car to in order to repair the damage sustained in the crash. They said that some of the parts of the car had already been removed, and that there was spray paint on a portion of the vehicle's exterior. In the days after the tragedy, family and friends gathered to remember their beloved Tilly, who they said always strived to make people feel like they were loved and achieving the best in their own lives. "She was truly someone who just met people where they were at," said her friend Yasmine Mzayek at a candlelight vigil days after the crash. "She believed in knowing that everyone was doing their best." Edwards' husband Kris also spoke with CBS News Los Angeles, disclosing the series of events that led to the tragic discovery of his wife's death. He said that Tilly changed his life for the better, opening him up to new things he never would have experienced without her love. "She taught me how to do for love and not for expectation. ... She chased art and beauty for no reason but to experience it. She just opened my eyes to everything," he said. "She made me into the loving, accepting human I am." Robins was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and for driving on a suspended license. He was released after posting $52,000 bond, according to jail records. The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office says that the case is currently being filed.
