Raising Cane's opening location in Portage this fall
The fast food chicken chain is set to open at the corner of Milham Avenue and Westnedge Avenue in Portage, Josh Weiner, the CEO of developer Meyer C. Weiner Company, confirmed to News 8. He said the two buildings that had been at that corner were demolished last week.
Raising Cane's aims to open restaurants in Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo areas
is expected to open there late this fall.
Weiner told News 8 over the phone Tuesday that his team is excited about developing that corner, something they've been working on for 15 years.
Raising Cane's, a Louisiana-founded chain known for its chicken, Texas toast and crinkle-cut fries, already has two locations in the east side of the state, with a third coming soon in Ann Arbor.
It's working to open more spots in Michigan, including in the Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo areas, a spokesperson previously told News 8. The goal is to open around 20 new locations over the next 10 years.
'Michigan has so many great Communities that we look forward to becoming a part of to not only serve, but to employ and give back,' the spokesperson said in a previous statement.

'The Lafayette area is a very unique area in the fact that we are a hub of the Cajun culture and certain arts and cultural history that is supremely unique and valuable,' she said. 'But we are moving forward in the areas of economic development and infrastructure improvements as the rest of the state is.' Emerson, who first ran for office at age 27, said she has seen both opportunities and challenges for women in politics during her time in Baton Rouge. 'Obviously, we'll touch a little bit on the issues affecting women, but also the issues affecting the state overall,' Emerson said. 'There are a lot of women who are leaders in our community, a really big part of economic development, and we are just honored to be here with them. But also encouraging women to stay involved in the government process.' She said she hopes her career encourages younger women to step forward and not wait for 'perfect timing' to pursue public service. 'I was very young when I ran,' Emerson said. 'I was 27 years old when I won my first term in the House of Representatives. So, I would just tell young women, 'Don't let anyone tell you they can't do it. Jump in, work hard, and prove everybody wrong.'' McGibboney guided the conversation toward lessons from the most recent legislative session, where both lawmakers said economic development, infrastructure and workforce opportunities dominated the agenda. But the event also highlighted something beyond policy: the value of women's voices in a historically male-dominated arena. Events like Leading Through Legislation, Spell said, provide a space for women in business and government to share strategies, build relationships and learn from one another.
