Superintendent Rocky Hanna thanks supporters at his election watch party
Early results for Leon County are in and show incumbent Rocky Hanna has 73% of the vote in the Superintendent of Schools race.
After an almost weeklong snow break, the Leon County School Board met Tuesday to discuss concerns of constituents regarding potential ICE raids in schools and great community impacts from local partners.
The board opened the meeting by bidding farewell to Eric Clark, executive director of the Foundation for Leon County Schools. He plans to move to Tampa to live closer to his son and granddaughter. He's been with the district for over 10 years.
"It's all about the kids and the teachers and helping to support staff," Clark told board members who praised his work in securing funding for the district.
"Thank you for your service," Board member Alva Smith said.
"I just want to tell you thank you and a job well done. You have raised the bar so high, our expectations for the position have changed," board member Darryl Jones said.
Immigration raid concerns
"I know there are a lot of people that have been asking questions about immigration and its potential impact in our schools," Jones told Hanna during the meeting. "Have there been any conversations about methods or how that occurs?"
Hanna said he proactively connected with Leon County Schools' District Chief Jimmy Williams on providing clear instructions to school administrators on what to do if immigration agents show up to take students out of schools.
Hanna said he was contacted by Florida's Department of Education and questioned on how he would direct the district to respond to possible ICE raids at school sites, he said principals have been instructed to comply with the agents.
"We're going to follow the law," Hanna said. "I'm hoping that we won't see this in our schools."
"Our schools are safe places and safe havens for our children, and we will continue to do everything we legally can to make sure that they're protected."
The Florida Highway Patrol assisted in a Jefferson County raid Tuesday spearheaded by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security that resulted in 12 people being detained who were "believed to be illegally residing in the State of Florida."
Will SAIL get money for its engineering program?
SAIL High School could be getting an expansion to its Engineering Pathway Program funded by the federal government through the Florida Department of Education. The Workforce Development Capitalization Incentive Grant is provided by the state to support career access for students.
The program's expansion will include the purchase of new equipment and software for the robotics program, the installation of the materials and training for teachers. The grant's total is $519,123.
Board member Smith brought up a concern that the grant has federal funds tied to it.
"I'm just curious if this is something that could be put into action and then have it be pulled possibly," Smith said.
The Trump administration on Tuesday temporarily paused grant, loan and other financial assistance programs at the Office of Management and Budget. The freeze went into effect at 5 p.m. but was reversed the next day.
Organizations that depend on federal funding like the school board have expressed concern over the political power move.
The board's attorney Opal McKinney-Williams said if funding was ultimately revoked, the board would simply have to adjust. She advised the board to move forward with the agenda as normal.
Hanna said the district receives a little over $3 million a month in federal funding for programs like food service, transportation, and more.
"It's a big deal," Hanna said. "But we have no reason to believe at this moment that those programs and resources and revenue are going to be in jeopardy through at least the end of the school year."
Big Bend Minority Chamber of Commerce: 'A generous donation'
In other business, the Big Bend Minority Chamber of Commerce presented a check to the LCS Foundation totaling $30,000.
The money was generated from the organization's 2024 golf tournament hosted to support Title I schools. Separately, Fairview Middle received the lion's share of the total donation with $28,000 for winning the Longest Drive competition in the tournament.
"As we look around America and the times, we are facing, I am proud to say that I have a role to play in Leon County," chamber president Antonio Jefferson said.
Over the five years in which the organization has hosted the event, it has raised over $200,000 for Title I schools.
"The impact has been exponential," Jones told the chamber members present.
Raa Middle revamp unveils new site and video
In the district's first step to roll out more marketing efforts, Raa Middle School got a new website and marketing video.
The brief video features a montage of students in performing arts like dance, music, art, and athletics to the sound of uplifting music and a motivational speech.
"We are Augusta Raa," the narrator says in the video's final seconds.
The website is the first of middle school sites to get an updated website and video.
Other school board business
The school board retreat will be held 9 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 3. in the Aquilina Howell Center. The public is invited to attend.
The board unanimously approved several agreements and a $4 million salary package with the Leon Classroom Teachers Association. The latest bargaining session between the organization and the board avoided a lengthy impasse process.
Superintendent Rocky Hanna said the district is looking into the possibility of adding on an instructional day to make up for the three days students missed during a historic snowstorm.

How ‘South Park' became the buzziest thing on TV — in its 27th season

Would the famously confrontational, proudly juvenile 'South Park' creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone take the money and run to safer ground? The answer came swiftly with the series' A brief summary: Trump is having a sexual relationship with Satan, a privilege once reserved for Saddam Hussein (see: the 1999 movie 'South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut'). Satan is a little disappointed in the size of the president's penis. Advertisement In a private room at Mar-a-Lago, Dora the Explorer, who has been kidnapped by ICE agents, is found giving a man an intimate massage. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem goes on a rampage gunning down puppies — a reference to Noem's Vice President JD Vance is depicted as Tattoo, the little person portrayed by Hervé Villechaize in the original 'Fantasy Island,' welcoming guests to Mar-a-Lago. At one point, Trump, wearing a white suit worthy of Ricardo Montalban's Mr. Roarke, literally boots him offscreen. And so on. The White House responded to all of this by declaring that the series 'hasn't been relevant for over 20 years,' reaffirming that 'South Park' is actually more relevant than ever. Comedy Central announced this week that episode 2 of the new season had more than 6 million multi-platform viewers and the biggest audience share (the percentage of the television audience watching a particular program at one time) in the history of the series, which premiered in 1997. (In lieu of a new episode on Aug. 13, Comedy Central also proclaimed this Wednesday 'South Park Day,' which kind of sounds like something 'South Park' would take pleasure in mocking. Episode 3 of the new season is scheduled to drop on Aug. 20). 'South Park' is, by definition, ridiculous, and I mean that in the best possible way. The very first episode, which ran Wednesday instead of a new installment, was called 'Cartman Gets an Anal Probe' (I still remember it fondly). The show works in broad strokes; Noem wasn't entirely wrong when she took 'South Park' to task for hitting the easiest possible elements of her persona (shooting dogs, trying to look glamorous as she does inhumane things). But that's how satire often works. It pinpoints dominant traits and hammers away at them. And when Parker and Stone ridicule something, or someone, it means they deem those targets ridiculous. Not scary. Not corrupt. Ridiculous. Advertisement In the past, Parker and Stone have shown an eagerness to take on both liberal pieties and conservative sacred cows; they drew the ire of Sean Penn after depicting him and other famous Hollywood denizens as deluded, self-righteous crusaders in the 2004 film 'Team America: World Police.' Parker and Stone lean libertarian, which gives them more people to insult and enrage. But there's something perfect about the current 'South Park' moment. A series that detractors dismiss as crude and over-the-top has gotten under the skin of a president whose rhetoric has more in common with professional wrestling and internet trolling than diplomacy. The show is addressing him with blunt force mockery, a tone that he understands. And people are watching — not just NPR listeners, but also 'South Park' bros, many of whom presumably voted for Trump. Equal-opportunity offenders pull in an eclectic crowd. In summary: Parker and Stone got paid. Paramount got its merger. 'South Park' ratings are through the roof. And political satire and democracy live another day. Chris Vognar can be reached at

Trump administration threatens to withhold federal funds from 'sanctuary' states like VT

The Trump administration is threatening to sue and withhold federal funds from more than 20 "sanctuary" states, cities and counties, because of their lack of cooperation with federal immigration enforcement. The new list, released Aug. 5 by the U.S. Department of Justice's Office of Public Affairs, includes three states and one city in New England: Connecticut, Rhode Island, Vermont and Boston, Massachusetts. "Sanctuary policies impede law enforcement and put American citizens at risk by design," Attorney General Pam Bondi said in a statement. "The Department of Justice will continue bringing litigation against sanctuary jurisdictions and work closely with the Department of Homeland Security to eradicate these harmful policies around the country." Inclusion on the list comes with the explicit threat of lawsuits and federal funding halts. And border czar Tom Homan has previously promised to "flood" those jurisdictions with Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents. In February, he said he would be "bringing hell" to Boston. Several federal judges have blocked the administration's previous efforts to punish some of those jurisdictions, including Chicago and Portland, Oregon. Earlier this year, the White House published and then almost immediately withdrew a significantly longer list after many communities on the list said they were erroneously included. In many of the jurisdictions included on the new list, including Boston, local leaders have argued that allowing police to partner with ICE discourages crime victims and witnesses from coming forward regardless of their immigration status. In announcing the new list, which also includes both New York City and the state of New York, Chicago and San Francisco, the White House highlighted how Louisville, Kentucky, had agreed to end sanctuary policies while facing threat of a lawsuit. What is a 'sanctuary jurisdiction'? There's no specific legal definition of a sanctuary jurisdiction, but Bondi's office said it considered things like failure to collaborate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, providing government benefits to undocumented immigrants, or refusing to share immigration information about jail detainees. Federal courts are currently weighing several lawsuits brought by the Trump administration against jurisdictions on the sanctuary list. A federal judge last month threw out the Trump administration's sanctuary jurisdiction lawsuit against Chicago and surrounding Cook County. Is Boston a 'sanctuary city?' Under the Trust Act, Boston city law enforcement officials are prohibited from cooperating with ICE to carry out civil warrants. The 2014 law makes many characterize Boston as a sanctuary city, though Boston Mayor Michelle Wu's administration doesn't use the term. Boston police officers work with immigration officials only on criminal warrants. 'Whenever someone commits a crime, whenever there's a criminal warrant, we hold them accountable,' Wu said during a March hearing in front of Congress. 'If ICE deems that they are dangerous enough to obtain a criminal warrant, we hold them accountable.' During that hearing, Wu touted the city's safety record and pushed back against "the false narrative" that all immigrants are criminals. 'The false narrative is that immigrants in general are criminals, or immigrants in general cause all sorts of danger and harm, that is actually what is undermining safety in our communities,' Wu said. Massachusetts was named on the original list of sanctuary states released in May, but it wasn't included this time. MA Gov. Maura Healey has said several times the Massachusetts isn't a sanctuary state. Which communities have been described as immigrant 'sanctuaries'? According to the Department of Justice, the following communities are offering "sanctuary" to immigrants who lack the legal right to be in this country. United States Attorney General Pam Bondi has said the list could change as cities, counties or states changed policies in the future. States: California Colorado Connecticut Delaware District of Columbia Illinois Minnesota Nevada New York Oregon Rhode Island Vermont Washington Counties: Baltimore County, MD Cook County, IL San Diego County, CA San Francisco County, CA Cities: Albuquerque, NM Berkeley, CA Boston, MA Chicago, IL Denver, CO East Lansing, MI Hoboken, NJ Jersey City, NJ Los Angeles, CA New Orleans, LA New York City, NY Newark, NJ Paterson, NJ Philadelphia, PA Portland, OR Rochester, NY Seattle, WA San Francisco City, CA Contributing: Melina Khan This article originally appeared on The Patriot Ledger: Vermont named sanctuary state by Trump administration over immigration Solve the daily Crossword
