LSU QB Garrett Nussmeier offers high praise for former Sooners

USA Today6 days ago
The Oklahoma Sooners lost a pair of playmakers to the transfer portal after the 2024 season. Bauer Sharp, who was arguably the Sooners best offensive player in 2024 and Nic Anderson, who was a star in 2023, but couldn't get on the field in 2024 due to injuries.
Now in Baton Rouge, the two former Sooners have impressed their new quarterback. Speaking at SEC media days, LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier had high praise for the new Tigers.
"Both of those guys are unbelievable players," Nussmeier said. "So I'll say for one, Bauer has kind of added another level of backbone to our offense, and that type of mindset he has. He's ready to take somebody's face off. And he can make plays and he's electric with the ball in his hand."
For all of the ways that the Sooners overextended Sharp last year, he had some good moments. He led the Sooners with 42 receptions and 324. However, Oklahoma's offense struggled throughout the season without its top five wide receivers, and the offensive line's inability to hold up in pass protection further overextended Sharp's role. Now playing on an LSU squad that is deep at wide receiver and has an experienced quarterback leading the way.
Anderson, a former four-star prospect in the 2022 class looked destined for Oklahoma stardom after a breakout 2023 season. But a hamstring injury kept him off the field for all but a few plays before he reaggravated the injury. Now with a fresh start, Anderson stood out to Nussmeier this offseason.
"Nic, on the other hand, is around the same way. He's very electric, very, very good football player, and makes plays on the ball in the air that are unbelievable. For him and me it's about getting the chemistry down and the timing and getting on the same page on things. And that's what the summer has been for and spring ball. Very excited for Nic, and looking forward to what he's going to be able to put out this year."
The Oklahoma Sooners will have an opportunity to play their former teammates at the end of the 2025 season when the Tigers come to Norman.

Jasiah Jervis of White Plains, N.Y. announced on Sunday that he has received an offer from the Michigan Wolverines. This is a notable development as Jervis has received an offer from the Spartans in late June and has started to pick up some more steam on the recruiting trail since then. Jervis ranks as the No. 7 shooting guard in 247Sports' rankings for the 2026 class. He is also listed as the No. 61 overall prospect and No. 4 player from New York in the class. Along with his notable offers from Michigan and Michigan State, Jervis has picked up offers from Tennessee, Texas, NC State and Villanova since late May. Prior to that, he received notable offers from Illinois, Virginia Tech, Rutgers, Northwestern, Wake Forest, Pitt and St. John's. Seahawks release former Iowa football TE Noah Fant

Noah Fant is looking for a new home in the NFL. The former Iowa tight end was released by the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday after spending three seasons in the Pacific Northwest. Reports are that the Seahawks released Fant to give more playing time to a couple of younger tight ends on the roster, AJ Barner and Elijah Arroyo. Fant was drafted 20th overall in the first round of the 2019 NFL draft by the Denver Broncos after a strong career with the Hawkeyes. Across three seasons in Iowa City, Fant appeared in 35 games and had 78 receptions for 1,083 yards and 19 touchdowns. What Fant lacked in blocking ability, he more than made up for in size and speed at the position. Fant was a matchup nightmare that had NFL offensive coordinators salivating. Fant was really good in Denver, playing in 47 games across three seasons in Mile High. Fant notched 170 receptions, 1,905 yards and 10 touchdowns during his time as a Bronco. Fant's time in Denver came to an end when he was shipped to Seattle in the Russell Wilson trade, a move that both sides may regret now. Fant played three seasons in Seattle, appearing in 48 games, registering 130 receptions, 1,400 yards, and five touchdowns as a Seahawk. The 6-foot-4 tight end never found quite the same level of success in Seattle as he did during his time in Denver. Part of that was due to a cut in his targets, which went from 249 in Denver to 170 in Seattle. It seems that both sides are looking for a change of scenery, leading to Fant's release on Sunday. Fant is still just 27 years old and should find a new home quickly. There are plenty of tight end-needy teams that would love the chance to take a flyer on a former first-round pick who's super talented and still has some tread left on his tires. But for now, it's the end of the Fant era in Seattle.
