ERC Launches Bakery in Sheikh Zuweid to Supply Bread to Gaza Amid Ongoing Aid Efforts
The Egyptian Red Crescent (ERC) has established a humanitarian bakery in the town of Sheikh Zuweid, near the Rafah border crossing, to produce and send fresh bread daily into the Gaza Strip as part of intensified Egyptian relief efforts for the besieged enclave.
According to Alqahera News, humanitarian aid operations have continued uninterrupted since early morning, marking the fourth consecutive day of relief delivery to Gaza. Dozens of trucks carrying essential food and medical supplies began lining up at the designated area outside the crossing at 5:30 a.m., awaiting clearance to unload their cargo.
However, several trucks were reportedly forced to return to the Egyptian side after being rejected by Israeli authorities over what were described as 'formal issues' — including minor box misalignments or small alterations in the load. The incident underscores the procedural and logistical hurdles facing aid convoys attempting to reach civilians in the conflict-hit territory.
Al-Mot'ani noted that the previous three convoys delivered approximately 4,000 tons of aid, consisting of 1,866 tons of food parcels, 1,640 tons of flour, 150 tons of medical supplies, and 400 tons of personal care items. By the end of the day, the total volume of aid delivered is expected to surpass 5,000 tons — a reflection of Egypt's unwavering commitment to humanitarian support for Gaza.
The newly launched bakery in Sheikh Zuweid is a key component of this effort. Staffed and coordinated by Egyptian Red Crescent teams, the facility is designed to produce thousands of loaves of bread daily. The bread is transported to Gaza via logistical routes managed through the Kerem Shalom crossing, with teams ensuring the preparation, packaging, and timely delivery of the vital supplies.
Despite mounting challenges, Egypt has kept the Rafah border crossing open throughout this phase of emergency assistance, reinforcing its role as a critical humanitarian lifeline for Palestinians in Gaza.

Egypt dispatches 10th aid convoy to Gaza
Egypt's 10th aid convoy started rolling through the Rafah crossing on Thursday early morning towards the inspection point of the Karm Abu Salem crossing, waiting for permission to unload tons of life-saving food and medical supplies for the Palestinian Red Crescent and UN aid agencies to deliver to Gaza. The convoy is part of the emergency Egyptian response, in collaboration with the UN and its humanitarian partners, to stem famine conditions unfolding in Gaza over the past several weeks amid the Israeli genocidal war and engineered famine in the strip. The convoy is carrying freshly baked bread, hot meals, flour, and urgently needed medical supplies for the besieged strip, according to media reports. Late on Wednesday, Egyptian Red Crescent (ERC) Executive Director Amal Imam said the total aid sent from Egypt to the Gaza Strip since October 2023 has reached 36,000 trucks carrying over 500,000 tons of aid. Seventy percent of this is humanitarian aid, while the remaining 30 percent consists of relief and medical supplies. "This aid includes 200 trucks coordinated with the Egyptian National Alliance for Civil and Development Work," Imam told the Al-Hayat Al-Youm TV programme. Media reports also confirmed that aid trucks unload their cargoes at the Karm Abu Salem crossing after inspection by the Israeli occupation forces, waiting to be delivered to starved Palestinians by the Palestinian Red Crescent and other UN aid agencies working in the strip. The five-month-old complete Israeli blockade on the entry of food, water, and medicine to Gaza has driven most of the strip's 2.3 million population into famine. This Israeli-induced starvation has killed at least 200 Palestinians, including tens of children. Since 27 July, the ERC has managed to deliver 20,000 tons of aid supplies to Gaza under the Zad El-Ezza: From Egypt to Gaza humanitarian initiative to save starving Palestinians. However, Israel has continued to delay the entry of aid trucks into Gaza at the Karm Abu Salem crossing as Israeli soldiers inspected trucks over and over for hours at a time. On Wednesday, the Egyptian military spokesman said twelve Egyptian military transport aircraft have airdropped large quantities of food aid to areas in Gaza that are difficult to access by land over the past three days. The airdrops are conducted in parallel with land convoys through the Rafah crossing. On Tuesday, President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi described the war in Gaza as "a war of starvation and genocide," calling for an immediate ceasefire and the unrestricted entry of humanitarian aid to the strip. Climate Change Leads Great Barrier Reef to Suffer Record Coral Bleaching
Rana Atef Australia's Great Barrier Reef has experienced its most severe coral bleaching on record, with researchers citing 'climate change-induced thermal stress' as the main cause behind the widespread damage. A report released on Wednesday by the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) revealed that two of the reef's three regions, the northern and southern areas, saw the most significant annual decline in coral cover since monitoring began 39 years ago. In both regions, coral cover dropped by 25% to 33%, following several years of strong growth. 'We're now seeing increased variability in hard coral cover,' said Dr. Mike Emslie, head of AIMS's Long-Term Monitoring Program. 'This is a trend that has unfolded over the past 15 years and reflects the growing pressure on the ecosystem.' The Great Barrier Reef, the world's largest living structure, stretches over 2,400 kilometres off the coast of Queensland in northeastern Australia. Since 2016, it has endured five mass bleaching events, where elevated sea temperatures cause corals to lose their vibrant color and become vulnerable to death. The 2024 bleaching episode was especially devastating. According to the report, it had the most extensive impact ever recorded, with bleaching ranging from moderate to severe across all three reef regions. Although the reef is not currently listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site "in danger," the United Nations has recommended its inclusion due to the mounting ecological threats. Australia has long resisted this designation, citing concerns over its impact on tourism. Workshops Launched to Teach Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphics
Youth workshops in Cairo will cover the development of ancient Egyptian scripts, grammar, and royal symbols, with expert-led training starting August 7th at Taiba Academy. Aug 06, 2025 The Ministry of Youth and Sports has announced the launch of a new training course focused on ancient Egyptian hieroglyphic writing, set to begin on August 7th at Taiba Academy on the Nile Corniche. The initiative is being organised in collaboration with Misr El Kheir Foundation and the Yaru Egyptian Civilization Foundation. The course is aimed at introducing young participants to the structure and history of the ancient Egyptian language. Instruction will be led by specialists in ancient Egyptian civilization and will explore the development of writing systems, from their earliest forms through to later scripts such as hieratic, demotic and Coptic. Participants will learn about the function and context of each script, as well as the tools and surfaces used for writing, including papyrus, stone, tomb walls, and pottery shards. Sessions will also address the decipherment of hieroglyphics, with references to the Rosetta Stone, the work of Jean-François Champollion, and materials held by the British Museum. In addition to the alphabet and numerical systems, the programme will introduce sentence structures, grammatical forms, pronouns, prepositions, negation, and genitive constructions. Vocabulary and word formation will be linked to both ancient and modern Egyptian usage. Other topics include the writing of city and capital names, royal titles, and the use of cartouches. Instruction will also cover royal crowns, sacred symbols, religious rites, and offering formulas found in ancient Egyptian texts.
