Margins to mainstream: Italy complete their T20 World Cup qualification job
New teams making the T20 World Cup has been the norm over the last few editions. Joining the storied climb of Afghanistan, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, Uganda and US next year would be Italy when they make their presence in the T20 World Cup to be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka in February-March.
Going into the final day on Friday, Italy, Netherlands and Jersey – a tiny island with just a population of 1,03, 267 that sits on the English Channel – were vying for the two spots available for the T20 World Cup. The day began with a shocker as Jersey pipped Scotland by one wicket off the final ball, which meant they had to wait till the outcome of the Italy versus The Netherlands fixture. The close result in the game played into Italy's hands.
Unlike their football team which has been deserted by luck, their cricket team got one as Jersey's tight win meant even if Italy lost the game, they had to ensure the Netherlands didn't win by a huge margin. After electing to bat at The Hague, Italy made 134/7 in 20 overs and all that they needed to ensure was that The Netherlands didn't chase the total inside 14 overs. A job their bowlers ensured despite the rapid start that the hosts got off to going at 11 runs an over in the powerplay before they took the gas off the pedals to coast home but also take Italy along with them to the sub-continent.
Starring in their qualification was a bunch of Aussie and English expats, who have moved to Italy alongside their captain Joe Burns. The Australian touch is hard to overlook, particularly given the head coach John Davison – famous for his century in the 2003 World Cup, is also from Australia. Joining Burns from Australia were Harry Manenti, Ben Manenti, Grant Stewart – a fast bowler born in Australia but played professional cricket for Kent before switching and Thomas Draca, who was in the IPL auction list recently.
Landing from England were opener Emilio Gay, who was part of England Lions, and Marcus Campopiano. Completing the Associate outfit were two expats from subcontinent – fast bowler Jaspreet Singh was born in Punjab's Phagwara and off-spinner Crishan Jorge Priyantha Fernando Kalugamage has Sri Lanka Lankan roots. Two of them – Justin and Anthony Mosca—are native Italians.
When the Netherlands raced to 94/1 in 11 overs, Italy appeared to be losing their way. But three tidy overs got the job done for them. 'Hopefully this is the stepping stone for a lot to come. It's a very emotional group at the moment. Being on the verge of a World Cup? It's very surreal,' Burns said.
Having missed the qualification last time by one win, this time Italy have finished the job, with assistant coach Kevin O'Brien crediting the preparation head of the Qualifiers for the turnaround. 'I think we've identified where we went wrong last time in Scotland (in the last cycle). We've looked at trying to change that, over the past few months or so,' he said.
'We're well set after the two warm-up games this week, and we had a nice camp in Horsham (Sussex) where we played three games. All in all, I think it's coming together, (and) the confidence is high in the group and we've got some very experienced players in the team, experience from all over the world as well,' O'Brien told ICC.

In came Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz from Bayern Leverkusen, Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth and Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt, while names such as Trent Alexander Arnold, Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez left for pastures anew. With the transfer window still active, Liverpool are also circling around stars like Parma's Giovanni Leoni, Crystal Palace's Marc Guehi and the biggest of them all, Alexander Isak from Newcastle. With so many signings in a single window, it does strengthen the squad but the club will also have to be adept in man management while dealing with them as the players bed in to the system. This has the potential to be a Man City-like evolution or a complete disaster of epic proportions. Only time will tell. Man City, meanwhile, are going into the new season with an air of uncertainty around them. Last year's meltdown is still fresh on everyone's minds and not even the most ardent of City haters must have had City finishing trophyless in their bingo card. But that is exactly what happened. Pep Guardiola's side suddenly sputtered, spewed and combusted, relinquishing the EPL title while also getting eliminated from the Round of 16 of the Champions League. Many will point out that the absence of Ballon d'Or winner Rodri might have been the source of City's miseries but while that might have been one of the issues, the signs were already there in the 23-24 season when they had been winless in the league for a whole month. They had recovered back then but last season with Liverpool firing on all cylinders, there was no comeback. The Citizens looked to address the concerns with new signings Rayan Ait-Nouri from Wolves, Rayan Cherki from Lyon and Tijjani Reijnders from AC Milan ahead of the expanded Club World Cup. But after an initial flurry, the malaise of conceding came back to haunt them when they lost 4-3 to Saudi club Al Hilal in another Round of 16 exit. Now if you come to Arsenal, they have been the most consistent team in the league for the past few seasons, regularly finishing second from 2022-2025. This might be a make-or-break season for manager Mikel Arteta who has been in charge since 2019 and has just a FA Cup to show for it. However, his philosophy has resonated with the squad with the Gunners playing their best football in quite some time, the culmination of which came last season when they knocked out the mighty Real Madrid from the UCL quarter finals. But they still needed a proven No.9 to get that final push to glory. And they have that in Viktor Gyokeres, who last season scored 97 goals in 102 games for Sporting, more than even Kylian Mbappe, Erling Haaland and Mohamed Salah. They have also reinforced their midfield and defence with huge signings like Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad, Christian Norgaard from Brentford, Nono Madueke from Chelsea and goalie Kepa Arrizabalaga from Bournemouth to name a few. However, the path to the title won't be easy with Arsenal given a fixture from hell where they face Manchester United in their very first match, followed by Liverpool, Man City and Newcastle, all within their first 6 matchdays. United and recent Club World Cup winners Chelsea have also made signings that plug in the gaps in their respective problem areas with the Red Devils set to field a new look front three with Matheus Cunha from Wolves, Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford and Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig while also chasing Brighton's Carlos Baleba in order to secure their mostly leaky midfield. As manager Ruben Amorim looks to recover from their lowly 15th place finish last term, even he knows it's going to be a long way back with United having to navigate through a tough opening period with clashes against Arsenal, City and Chelsea lined up in their first 5 fixtures. Chelsea, meanwhile, seemed to have found their mojo after a couple of underwhelming seasons, finishing 4th in the league in the 2024-25 season and also thrashing Champions League winners PSG 4-0 in the Club World Cup final. This was courtesy of an inspired signing of Joao Pedro from Brighton who has started life at Stamford Bridge with a bang. His partnership with Cole Palmer looks almost Kevin de Bruyne-Haaland-esque which might pose a problem for the rest of the teams. The Blues, however, have also signed Liam Delap from Ipswich Town, Jorrel Hato from Ajax and Jamie Gittens as their squad depth looks formidable heading into the new season.

In the second T20I between Australia and South Africa, Glenn Maxwell took on an unusual role — bowling inside the PowerPlay. Between the 2022 T20 World Cup and this series, he had bowled only five PowerPlay overs in T20Is. So when he dismissed South Africa captain Aiden Markram, the spin-bowling all-rounder reacted animatedly. By his own admission, Maxwell is just as surprised as anyone when he gets a wicket. 'I love getting wickets.' Maxwell told 'It's very surprising anytime I get anyone out. I'm there to do a job in the PowerPlay and I'm trying to execute that as well as I can.' With an eye on the 2026 T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka, Maxwell is looking to build his experience bowling under fielding restrictions. 'I think in the subcontinent you might be able to get a little bit more out of it as a spinner early on,' Maxwell, who has 49 T20I wickets, said. 'Especially that new ball, the hard seam, being able to grip on those dry surfaces. So it might be something we think about head forward,' he added. Maxwell has also spent most of his career shuffling through batting positions, adapting to team needs — whether taking on a favourable matchup or finishing the innings. 'I've been a bit of the shuffler around the order, up and down,' the 36-year-old said. 'I'm filling holes at the moment.' 'Even during the West Indies series, trying to combat Akeal Hosein (by) going up the top, this series going a little bit lower, trying to manage that back end (of the innings). (I'm) trying to play whatever role is needed for me in this side and just try and be as adaptable as possible,' Maxwell said.

R Ashwin on Tim David: ‘I shouldn't say this…told the decision makers of a few IPL teams to pick him'
Australian power-hitter Tim David has been in sublime form in T20Is. In the Caribbean, he managed to pull off a blistering ton, and in the first T20I against South Africa in Darwin, he pulled Australia out of trouble by scoring a substantial 83-run innings, which helped his team win the game. Earlier in the year, David was also part of the Indian Premier League-winning side Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Coming down the order, David played crucial knocks throughout the season and helped RCB nick off close games. Former Indian off-spinner R Ashwin claimed that he did flag a few franchises about David. 'I shouldn't say this, but I told the decision makers of a few IPL teams to pick him before the last auction. They all said, 'No, his game has dropped off drastically.' I believe the future of T20 cricket is going to be having tall batters with long levers and strong build. They are going to rule the roost if there are no changes brought to the wide line,' Ashwin said on his YouTube channel. 'A player RCB picked up at base price (₹3 crore) has taken his game to the next level. It's good to see Australia sending him up the order. A real steal for RCB,' Ashwin added. Intriguingly, David was seen wielding an SS Ton blade marked in the name of West Indies colossus Andre Russell who retired from international cricket after the previous T20I between the sides. 'I've spent a lot of time working on power hitting, but now I'm working on my shot selection. I've been carrying that Dre Russ bat around for a year, and it felt like it was the best time to use it,' David said at the post-match presentation ceremony after century in West Indies in the 3rd T20I. 'Was just having a great time in the middle playing for Australia. It was nice to have a period at home and get my body right. I didn't think I would get the opportunity to get a hundred for Australia, so I'm stoked,' David added.
