You can get our new album on cassette - 40 years of Deacon Blue

BBC News21-03-2025

In 1985 Deacon Blue formed in Glasgow and over the years have achieved great success with 12 UK top 40 singles and two UK number 1 albums.Their debut album, Raintown, referring to Glasgow, spawned what is probably their most popular hit, Dignity, which is still regularly played at parties and has even been adopted by Dundee United fans.Forty years on, the band are still together - after a brief hiatus - and are releasing a new album, The Great Western Road. The album title gives a nod to the places they used to meet up for gigs back in the day and also serves as a metaphor for their lives."I was thinking about these big roads and avenues that lead out of Glasgow and at the time of life we're at it's this unknown ending," singer Ricky Ross tells BBC Radio's Good Morning Scotland programme."You have to think about these things so it became an interesting metaphor - the idea that you just don't know what's round the corner. It's also quite exciting."
Ross, a former teacher, points out that a lot has changed in 40 years, not least the music industry, which has changed almost beyond recognition. To celebrate this, and to mark their milestone, the band are releasing a cassette version of the new album."That's causing people quite a lot of amusement as they can't find a cassette player," Ross says. The band formed in the summer of 1985 - when Ross moved from Dundee to Glasgow - taking their name from the 1977 Steely Dan song Deacon Blues.Original members included Ross, singer Lorraine McIntosh - who married Ross in 1990 - drummer Dougie Vipond, keyboard player James Prime and guitarist Graeme Kelling."This all started when Dougie and I got together," Ross adds."Over the last 40 years our lives have changed and things have gone in different directions for everyone but those of us who started it are very, very close."They are the closest people in my life. We all created something very special when we started."
Ross says he really appreciates the older fans who still come to the gigs but is also pleased to see younger fans in their audiences."I am very grateful that people are still coming – that they've come all these years to see us," he says. "They are the core audience but its lovely that they've passed this on to other people as well."We were playing at the Albert Hall a couple of years ago – there were four guys in their early 20s and I thought 'are they taking the mickey here?' but they were for real and that was quite nice."The band are currently playing a string of gigs around the UK and Ireland, some of which are in smaller theatres."We wanted to do the new record and a lot of the songs we haven't got the chance to do when we play bigger shows," Ross says."But we're coming back later in the year – playing in Aberdeen and a couple of shows at the Hydro in Glasgow - when we'll do everything, all manner of things, which we always try to do."You always want to make people feel that they've got the best of you."

Married At First Sight's Sacha shares results of nose job surgery after bitter split from groom

MARRIED At First Sight bride Sacha Jones has revealed the results of her recent nose job. Back in May, the E4 show alum, 29, shared a series of pictures from her hospital bed after having undergone the procedure. 7 7 7 7 Sacha showcased a snap in a blue hospital gown and white medical stockings to her Instagram Stories. She was seen stretched out on the bed and the Married At First Sight 2024 bride added a poll box to ask her followers: "What do you think I'm having done? (If you don't know already.)" Sacha, whose marriage to dad-of-one Ross on the matchmaking show ended in a bitter split, then showed an image of her face and nose taped up after the surgery - yet her full face transformation has now come to light. The Brummie beauty has now taken to Instagram after her bandages were removed - and her new nose had healed. She styled her blonde locks poker straight and wore a long-sleeve white top as she teased her fans about the "grand reveal." In the new clip, she gushed: "Arghhh, here she is," before showing off her new side-profile look. Sacha added: "Obviously she's still very swollen so the nose will go a lot smaller, I'm aware I look like Avatar from the front. "I can really tell what it's going to look like when the swelling has gone down. "It will take about six to 12 months to get the full final result. "My surgeon has done an incredible job." MAFS star shocks fans as she reveals she's had secret nose job after bitter split on show Sacha, who turned to Christianity following her failed MAFS experience, then added: "And I also want to take this time to address something. "That's a comment I keep getting in regard to my surgery and my faith. "So the Christian police have been out and commenting on my surgery videos about should a woman of God get surgery. "The way I always describe God and a relationship with God the father is literally like the relationship with your earthly father. Mafs couples that have stood the test of time Loved-up Tayah Victoria and Adam Aveling of series six fame had the first Mafs baby. The pair couldn't keep their hands off each other on the programme and quickly found their feet in the outside world, moving into Adam's Doncaster home. Just 18 months after meeting, the couple welcomed their daughter Beau. Season five couple Michelle Walder and Owen Jenkins also managed to make their marriage work away from the cameras and had their first child in December. Teacher Michelle, 29, has no regrets about taking part in the experiment. She told us: 'I just feel very lucky and thankful that it has worked out - and excited for everything to come.' Michelle and Owen were both sick of dating apps when they applied in 2019. Owen recalled: 'I had been out for some drinks with a friend after work. "While he was out for a cigarette I was scrolling on Instagram waiting for him to come back in. 'The MAFS advert was the last thing I saw, and I joked, 'Wouldn't it be funny if I signed up?' 'A few beers later when I was back at home I sent in the application, and the rest is history.' Another couple to make Mafs UK history is Zoe Clifton and Jenna Robinson. Despite a slight rocky start, where they clashed over Jenna's vegan lifestyle, the show's first same sex pairing are still going strong. They even have a successful podcast together called Life With a Pod. Jenna shed light on being involved in the show earlier this year when she told us: "We're not legally married, and I never felt like we were. I definitely feel the process makes you take the relationship a lot more seriously and having the help of the experts… if you can survive that process it sets a firm foundation for a long-lasting relationship." "When I told my dad about having my nose done for the first time I even knew what he was going to say but I said 'don't try and stop me because I'm going to do it anyway.' "He would rather me not do it - he says 'you're beautiful the way you are, I gave you that nose.'" She added: "Did it stop my dad being there for me when I was in Turkey, answering the phone at 4am to check I was OK, praying for my healing and was with me every step of the way. "Did that stop him from doing that? Did that make him disown me? No. "I believe that's the same with my heavenly father as well, did he turn his back on me? Did he disown me? Did it mean he wasn't with me every step of the way? "Would he rather me didn't do it because he thinks I'm perfect the way I am? Maybe." Sacha then told how she didn't see the difference between having hair coloured or teeth whitened to her nose job in terms of altering appearance and potential vanity. She said she and Jesus were still "working on some things" after only finding faith a year ago. CLAP BACK Yet despite her lengthy video argument, some of her followers remained unconvinced. One wrote: "This isn't me being critical, honestly. But you're a devout Christian and really try to follow the scriptures in your life, right? So I'm just wondering — isn't this kind of thing completely against what the Bible teaches us?" Another agreed and put: "Nothing can make God disown you, however that does not mean that you should go out of your way to do something you know he would prefer you not to. Insecurity comes from within rather than injections or surgical changes. All you have to do is ask for forgiveness, truthfully, and it'll be like it never happened. God bless you." Yet others were quick to back the TV star and one wrote: "Omg you look beautiful babe! Do what makes YOU happy." Another added: "Whatever your faith is, I think always do what's right for u & nobody else's opinion counts. You were lovely before & still lovely now! Be happy always." MAFS JOURNEY Sacha married Ross at the start of MAFS' 2024 series when sparks flew and everything seemed perfect between the pair. The couple then went from strength to strength in their marriage, with them dubbed as one of the strongest pairs early on in the programme. Yet cracks began to show and Ross' temper began to flare as they hit a series of bumps in the road. Sacha was keen to move to Manchester to be with Ross, with her even open to leaving her life in Birmingham behind. Her eventual split with Manchester-based Ross then came two weeks after filming wrapped. back in January. Yet all was not as it seemed, with the aesthetics practitioner stating she had: "Married our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ." Flashing a silver band, she added: "Now guys this is a purity ring and I just wanted to explain that to you. "A purity ring just represents your commitment to God and vowing to stay abstinent until marriage. "They're on your hand as a reminder of your vow to God if you ever get tempted." On MAFS UK, Sacha became famous for her abstinence, as she told Ross she wasn't planning to be intimate with him until their relationship was well established. 7 7 7

Vicko Sevelj: Dundee United player of year makes bold prediction ahead of maiden European campaign

Vick Sevelj overcame major culture shocks – both on and off the pitch – to become Dundee United's player of the year. But the Croatian star insists Tangerines fans have yet to see him at his best. Sevelj was a stand-out performer for United in his first season with the club. In recognition of his efforts, he was presented with the top gong at the Tangerines' end-of-season awards night. But the defender believes the upcoming campaign will be even better – especially now he has fully settled into life in Scotland. He explained: 'It was hard for me for the first few months because the football here is very different. 'Even in the League Cup against the lower league teams it was difficult. 'But every game after that, I felt I stepped up and stepped up. Overall I feel I have done well and next season I think I will be even better. 'I will have a rest now. I am looking forward to going home to sunny Croatia for some holidays because I haven't been home for months. 'But when I get back next season, I am ready to work harder and hopefully become a better player. 'It will help that I know the league now; I have a year's experience of playing in this country, so I believe I will improve. 'The culture in Scotland is a little bit different to back home but I think I have settled in well to life here. 'It is cold and windy, of course, which is very different to home! 'But on the pitch everything is really good and I am enjoying life here.' Sevelj, like all of his Tannadice team-mates, has European football to look forward to upon his return to the club. It is a just reward for a superb first season back in the Premiership. But the 24-year-old admits continental competition was the last thing on his mind when he signed for United. 'In all honesty, I didn't think Europe would be possible when I was coming here,' he conceded. 'I knew the league would be so competitive, but we were coming from the Championship and I expected this season would be about staying in the league. 'The team who comes up is usually the favourite to be relegated, so I don't think anyone would have imagined we'd finish fourth. 'But it didn't take long after coming here, I could see we were a strong team with a good squad. 'I thought early on in the season we could have a good season because I could see how hard everyone works in training. 'There have been ups and downs, but when we had the down times we always came back strongly from them. 'After the split, we didn't play great but we had put ourselves in a nice position. 'Going into the Aberdeen game on the final day we had dreams and thankfully they came true. 'I think we deserved what we have achieved and everyone is looking forward to it now.' The closes Sevelj has come to playing European football in his career is a seat on the bench. Now he hopes to experience it in full – and help ensure United fans enjoy their 'adventure'. 'I haven't played in Europe before, I was in the squad at Hadjuk Split for a game against Galatasaray and a few others,' he said. 'But I never got on the pitch, so I didn't feel I was playing at that level. 'So to have the chance of doing it now is amazing, it's the level every player wants to be at. 'You want to play against these good teams with good players and for the fans it will be a fun adventure.

EastEnders' Vicki is disturbed as shocking new secret about Joel is revealed

EastEnders' Vicki Fowler (Alice Haig) is disturbed after finding out a shocking secret about her partner Ross Marshall's (Alex Walkinshaw) son Joel (Max Murray) next week. It was recently confirmed that teenager Joel will take feature in a dark incel plot, having arrived in Walford with Ross and Vicki hiding a huge secret earlier this year. It was later revealed that while still living in Australia, Joel had upskirted one of his schoolmates and shared the photo online. Ross paid the family off to prevent them going to the police, but they demanded that Joel did not return to Sydney. While Ross and Vicki hoped that Joel had changed his ways since moving onto Albert Square, his behaviour has only worsened, having recorded himself and Avani Nandra-Hart (Aaliyah James) having sex without her consent. While Avani remains unaware of the video's existence, she has been on the receiving end of online trolling after word spread around Walford High that she and Joel had slept together. In scenes to air this week, Amy Mitchell (Ellie Dadd) reveals to Vicki that Joel is the reason Avani is getting more abusive messages, as he shamed Avani for sleeping with him. A disgusted Vicki informs partner Ross about her discovery, and the couple agree that Joel needs more positive male role models in his life. More Trending While they hope his friendship with Tommy Moon (Sonny Kendall) will be good for him, little do they know that he recently encouraged Tommy to pay for adult content using Alfie Moon's (Shane Richie) credit card.
