Serbia: Smoke bombs thrown in parliament as three MPs injured

Sky News04-03-2025

At least three Serbian MPs have been injured after smoke bombs and flares were thrown in the country's parliament.
Chaos erupted as politicians were scheduled to vote on a law that would increase funding for university education.
But opposition parties insisted this was illegal and the parliament should first confirm the resignation of Serbia 's prime minister Milos Vucevic and his government.
Members of the opposition blew whistles and held up a banner reading "Serbia has risen so the regime would fall!"
Video footage from the assembly hall showed a clash first between politicians, and later flares and smoke bombs being thrown. Serbian media said eggs and water bottles were also flung.
Parliamentary speaker Ana Brnabic said one of the injured politicians was in a serious condition and accused the opposition of being a "terrorist gang".
The incident reflects a deep political crisis in Serbia, where months-long anti-corruption protests have shaken the populist government.
Mr Vucevic resigned as prime minister in January as authorities faced protests over a concrete canopy collapse in November that killed 15 people. Critics blamed the collapse on rampant corruption.

Djokovic can beat Zverev and close on historic 25th grand slam title

Novak Djokovic has often rewritten the tennis history books by setting records throughout his amazing career but the biggest achievement of all, a 25th grand-slam singles title, could be just a few days away in Paris. The current world No.6 was not fancied heading into the French Open after lacklustre performances at Monte Carlo, where he lost to Alejandro Tabilo in the round of 32, and then in Madrid where he was beaten by Matteo Arnaldi in the round of 64. It seemed being stuck on 99 career titles was placing a heavy weight on his shoulders but reaching the 100-win milestone with success at the Geneva Open appears to have freshened up his approach. That's quite a remarkable achievement as only Jimmy Connors with 109 ATP triumphs and Roger Federer with 103 have achieved this feat in the open era of the men's game and the goal now for the 38-year-old Serbian is to win one more grand slam and move ahead of Margaret Court, who has also 24 slam trophies to her credit. Djokovic has won ten Australian Opens, seven Wimbledon crowns and four US Open titles but because of Rafael Nadal's dominance at the clay court tournament he has won only three times at Roland Garros, most recently two years ago. This, however, will be his 16th consecutive French Open quarter-final – and his 19th in total – which is his best run into the later stages of any of the slams and he has won ten straight matches at Roland Garros stretching back to his march to gold medal glory in last summer's Paris Olympics. Nole has yet to drop a set in the French capital this year, where he has also found time to celebrate with the Paris Saint-Germain team after their Champions League triumph. But will have to be at his best to reach the last four as Alexander Zverev has advanced to the semi-finals in each of the last four years and has finally recovered from the slump he tumbled into after losing the Australian Open final to Jannik Sinner at the start of the year. Djokovic, though, will be confident of victory as he enjoys an 8-5 record over the German including a straight sets victory at Roland Garros in 2019 and he is 4/1 with Betway and Bet Victor to win in four sets and 19/20 with the former firm to reach his 13th French Open semi-final. Whether or not he can then overpower Sinner or Alexander Bublik, who stunned British No.1 Jack Draper on Monday, is a fascinating proposition. Madison Keys and Coco Gauff clash in a scintillating all-American quarter-final at the French Open which is an encounter not to be missed. Reigning Australian Open champion Keys is bidding to reach her second semi-final on the Paris clay while Gauff reached the final three years ago only to be overwhelmed in a 6-1, 6-3 reversal to a majestic Iga Swiatek. Gauff has lost the last two meetings with her opponent, including at last year's Madrid Open quarter-final when Keys won their quarter-final encounter 7-6, 4-6, 6-4, but can level their head-to head record at three wins apiece by claiming the deciding set at 16/5 with Ladbrokes and Coral. More Trending Lois Boisson is the last French player standing at Roland Garros after stunning Jessica Pegula by battling back from losing the opening set in their fourth-round match to win 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. It was an astonishing victory for the wildcard , who has never previously played ata grand slam but despite the passionate support she will receive the 22-year-old world No.361 will be dismissed by talented teenager Mirra Andreeva in straight sets. That outcome is no better than 4/1 with Betway so take Russia's 18-year-old world No.6 to win by more than 5.5 games at 4/5 with Ladbrokes, Coral and William Hill. Has Serbia really fallen foul of Moscow?

Is it getting harder for Serbian president Aleksandar Vučić to maintain his balancing act between Moscow and the West? Why else, after all, would Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) suddenly revive a year-old story about covert arms supplies to Ukraine? Back in June of last year, the Financial Times splashed the story that Serbia had exported around €800 million (£673 million) worth of ammunition to third parties that then ended up being transferred to Ukraine. At the time, Vučić did not try to deny this, but said that it had nothing to do with Serbia. 'We have had many contracts with Americans, Spaniards, Czechs, others,' he said. 'What they do with that in the end is their job.' This is nonsense. Ammunition, like weapons, is covered by the international system of end-use certificates, which control their re-export. It is, of course, possible for unscrupulous facilitators to find some loopholes in the system, but €800 million worth? Hardly.

Aberdeen defender calls for 'shameful' thug who injured Jack MacKenzie to own up to authorities

Aberdeen defender Slobodan Rubezic has urged the 'shameful' thug who hit Jack MacKenzie with a seat at Tannadice to own up to the authorities. Full-back MacKenzie required stitches after being hit on the head by a piece of seat thrown from within the Aberdeen support in the upper deck of the Fair Play stand. MacKenzie received treatment on the pitch after the 2-1 loss to Dundee United, where there was a pitch-invasion by home fans at the final whistle. He was taken off the pitch in a wheelchair with his bloodied head bandaged. Both clubs are working in conjunction with Police Scotland to find the culprit. Currently on loan at Serbian top-flight Novi Pazar, centre-back Rubezic says the supporter involved is 'ruining the great image of Aberdeen fans' and should be ashamed. Rubezic said: 'If you have enough courage to throw anything, come forward and admit you did it, don't hide. 'There is no justification for something like this. 'Everyone understands frustration and everything related to it – but don't do this. 'Hurting someone like this makes no sense at all. 'He has a family as well and is sad like you with this act. 'You're ruining the image of great Aberdeen fans and supporters and is it very shameful to judge and comment, and allow individuals to tarnish players, coaches – anyone who holds a position in the club.' Aberdeen released a statement calling for fans who witnessed the incident to contact the club with any information which may help assist further discussions with authorities. Police Scotland have also appealed for anyone who saw what happened or has mobile phone footage of the incident to get in contact. Posting on Instagram, Rubezic said: 'Everyone has the right to express their frustration and dissatisfaction with the results or performance of the players. 'But there is a cultural way for that and the right way to express your frustration. 'Because every player or anyone who works for the club has the best intention and wants the best for the club he works for and from whom he eats. 'My first example is captain Shinnie and some situations related to him and again each of the players return your love and respect. 'So, for me, anyone who hits a player should be publicly ashamed and be ashamed of his home upbringing. 'Think before you want to do anything – don't be stupid!!!'
