Rory is getting millions to play in Australia. This is why it's worth it

Portrush, Northern Ireland: The boss of golf's European Tour has likened Rory McIlroy's upcoming visit to play the Australian Open to when Tiger Woods flew Down Under to play in Australia's marquee events more than a decade ago.
Woods won the Australian Masters in 2009 at Kingston Heath – where his scorecard remains mounted on the clubhouse wall – then returned a year later but was unable to hunt down Stuart Appleby at Victoria Golf Club.
McIlroy, now 36, has not played at the Open since 2014 when he was unable to defend the title he'd won in 2013 by outlasting Adam Scott. Eleven years on, he returns as a five-time major winner, and is being paid upwards of $3 million by the Victorian government, according to two industry sources who wouldn't comment publicly because of the confidential nature of the contract.
McIlroy finished the British Open at Portrush on Sunday tied for seventh, incredibly his 33rd top-10 finish at a major.
European Tour and Ryder Cup CEO Guy Kinnings – a long-time player manager – will be present when McIlroy tees off at Royal Melbourne's globally renowned composite course in the first week of December.
'I remember being there when Tiger came down … and Rory; we've been incredibly lucky. I've lived through an era when we had the biggest athlete on the planet in Tiger, and he transformed the game completely for everyone. I always go, 'everyone should go and shake him by the hand'. He changed the game completely.
'What Rory has done … and can do, for international golf is massive ... he has that same sort of appeal. People get very excited about Rory also. The great thing about Rory is he's his own man, and he's shown that he's going where he wants to go.'
Australian superstars Cameron Smith, Adam Scott, Marc Leishman, Lucas Herbert and Elvis Smylie are all expected to play the Open alongside McIlroy, with announcements expected in the near future.

Fever ready for fierce grand final battle with rivals

West Coast have had the wood on the Melbourne Vixens this season but star defender Fran Williams expects the battle-hardened Victorian outfit to put up a fierce challenge in the Super Netball grand final. Ahead of the decider on Saturday at Melbourne's Rod Laver Arena, on the Vixens' home patch after Netball Australia sold hosting rights, England captain Williams says the teams have formed a spicy rivalry. They have met in the grand final twice before, with Melbourne taking the honours in 2020 and the Fever winning their first-ever Super title in 2022 in a thumping 11-point victory. Fever have won both meetings this season en route to claiming the minor premiership and the record for the most consecutive wins, which is now up to 13. Williams joined the Fever last season and said she quickly became aware there was no love lost between her team and the Vixens. "There's a real rivalry and I noticed that when I arrived," the 27-year-old goal keeper said. "I think it's because they've had so many tightly-contested finals matches in the past and you kind of inherit that rivalry when you come and join this side." While Fever blitzed the NSW Swifts in the major semi-final to book a grand final berth, the fourth-placed Vixens edged reigning champions Adelaide by two points in the minor semi-final. They then upset the Swifts in Sydney in a one-goal thriller on Sunday to reach their fourth grand final in six seasons. "Playing Vixens is an exciting challenge for us and we're so up for it," said Williams. "We obviously played them in round 14, so quite fresh playing them ... we've got some evidence on how we've been able to beat them. "But also we know they're a quality, class side as well that bring some insane netball come finals time ... we'll be going in all guns blazing." Williams said her team would "embrace" the sell-out occasion in enemy territory, hopeful that some of the green army would make the trip east. "We've known from the start of the season that if we were going to win this whole thing, we were going to have to do it away so that's not feeling that new to us. "When you go away, our Fever bubble stays really strong and we kind of lean in on each other even more." Williams said she and Diamonds defender Sunday Aryang would be working hard to put pressure on the Vixens' Test shooting duo Sophie Garbin and Kiera Austin. "I thought Sophie was really impressive on the weekend and Keira as well with her super shot shooting, she was pretty clutch," Williams said. "They're very crafty with the ball so it's about winning your one on one battle first to kind of make them unsettled, and then making sure that they don't have those easy links and connections."

Tennis champion Naomi Osaka announces surprise split with coach Patrick Mouratoglou weeks before US Open

Four-time grand slam champion Naomi Osaka has announced she has split with coach Patrick Mouratoglou after less than a year. Osaka hired the long-time coach of her idol Serena Williams shortly after firing Wim Fissette following her second-round exit at last year's US Open. But the signs were ominous when Mouratoglou was absent from the DC Open this week. 'Merci Patrick,' Osaka said. 'It was such a great experience learning from you. Wishing you nothing but the best. 'You are one of the coolest people I've ever met and I'm sure I'll see you around.' She will now head to Toronto this week and then Flushing Meadows for the final grand slam of 2025 with a new-look team. The US Open, an event she has won twice, begins in New York on August 24. Osaka initially hesitated partnering up with Mouratoglou, fearful that Williams had elevated his reputation. 'I think the fact that he was Serena's coach for me made me want to avoid him just because his persona is so big,' she said last year. 'Like, this isn't rude because I found out it's not true, but I didn't know if he was a good coach or he coached Serena. 'Then I met him, talked to him, worked with him on the court. He absolutely is a really good coach. I'm really glad that he's taking this project on as well.' The former world No.1 is currently ranked 51st and has a 21-11 record this season. She hasn't been past the third round at a grand slam tournament since winning the 2021 Australian Open. Osaka later took time out to give birth to her daughter, whose birthday coincided with her defeat at Wimbledon earlier this month. 'Honestly, right now I'm just really upset,' she said after the match. 'I'm just gonna be a negative human being today. I'm so sorry. I have nothing positive to say about myself, which is something I'm working on. 'It was my daughter's birthday. I was happy about that this week. Other than that, today, I'm just constantly replaying the match. 'I think if I look back on it, I can be happy with how I played. I started getting a lot more comfortable on grass. 'It's because I actually thought I could play well in general. Not saying I didn't play well, but make a deep run here. I wanted to do better than I did before. Also, I felt like I was trying so hard. I low-key busted a vein in my hand.' 'I feel like, while I still have the opportunity to try to (compete), I want to. 'Even though I get very upset when I lose, but I think that's my competitive nature.' In tears after being eliminated from the French Open in May, having lost to 10th seed Paula Badosa in a nightmare first-round match-up, Osaka was asked to compare that to the Wimbledon defeat. 'I think in Paris ... when I sat here, I was very emotional. Now I don't feel anything,' she said. 'I guess I prefer to feel nothing than everything.' The Wimbledon press conference went viral where it was splashed across social media and various media outlets. But the 27-year-old later fumed about how she was portrayed. 'Bro ... why is it every time I do a press conference after a loss the ESPNs and blogs gotta clip it and put it up,' she said on X (formerly Twitter). 'WTF, why don't they clip my press conferences after I win? Like, why push the narrative that I'm always sad? 'Sure I was disappointed a couple hours ago, now I'm motivated to do better. That's human emotions. The way they clip me I feel like I should be fake happy all the time.'
