Australia v West Indies, 3rd Test: Mitchell Starc brings up 100 Tests in day-night clash

News.com.aua day ago
Pakistan fast bowling legend Wasim Akram hailed Australia's Mitchell Starc as a 'modern-day great' for reaching 100 Test appearances.
Starc, who has often drawn comparisons with fellow left-arm quick Akram, will reach the milestone when the third Test against the West Indies begins in Jamaica.
'It is a big deal in this day and age to reach 100 Tests, congratulations to Starc,' Akram told AFP.
'That shows the quality and resolve of the man.'
The 35-year-old becomes the 83rd player and 16th Australian to play 100 Tests, and only the second Australian fast bowler after Glenn McGrath.
'To play 100 Tests shows how consistent Starc has been and also shows where his priorities lie -- that is to play red-ball cricket,' Akram said.
'He has also played Twenty20 and league cricket but his career in Test cricket is way ahead and to me he is a modern-day great.'
Starc stands on 395 Test wickets, so has the tantalising prospect of taking his landmark 400th wicket during his 100th Test.
His strike rate is remarkably similar to Akram, who retired in 2002 after taking 414 wickets in 104 Tests.
Both players, said Akram, had suffered injuries to 'every joint, every part of the body' during their careers.
'People often compare us but we have played in different eras,' Akram said.
'He's got the pace, he's got the swing and he's bowling very intelligently to the new batsman, especially with the new ball.'

Grace Kim played two shots of a lifetime to come from the clouds and clinch the Evian Championship in a playoff

Australia has a new major champion after Grace Kim played two of the greatest shots of her lifetime to first reach a playoff, then keep it alive before finally taking out the Evian Championship in unforgettable fashion. The 24-year-old from Sydney was three-shots off the lead before making in the final round at Evian-les-Bains before making birdies on her 15th and 16th holes then a stunning eagle on the final hole of regulation to get into a sudden death showdown with world No.2 Jeeno Thitikul. But in dramatic scenes, Kim looked to have blown her chances with an errant second shot going down the 18th hole again, using the same four-hybrid club which had been good to her just minutes earlier. Kim's approach sailed right into a pond, demanding she hole out a miracle chip to make a birdie and force Thitikul to step up. With her shoulders slumping, Kim floated her chip onto the green and watched as it rolled to3ard the cup and went in, causing delirium around the huge crowd. Grace Kim are you KIDDING?! She chips in on the first playoff hole after hitting her approach in the penalty area ðŸ'¥ — LPGA (@LPGA) July 13, 2025 Thitikul was left with the same putt she missed in regulation to win, to keep the tournament alive, and made up for her miss minutes earlier by making it, second the playoff to a second hole. With $1.8m on the line, and given another chance, Kim nailed her second shot, giving herself another chance at eagle, while Thitikul missed the green to the left. With adrenaline pumping, Kim wouldn't be denied, making the eagle to cue celebrations as she cemented a win for the ages for Kim who had only recorded two top-20 finishes in her 13 major appearances. The victory marked a stunning turnaround for Kim who, having started the day ashot off the lead, looked down and out after bogeying two of her opening four holes. She steadied but still found herself three shots off the clubhouse lead of 13-under with a horror double-bogey on her 12th hole. But, having endured some horrible bounces and bunker les throughout her rollercoaster round at Evian-les-Bains, and in a testament to her grit, Kim made birdies on her 15th and 16th holes to stay within touching distance. Her playing partner, world No.2 Jeeno Thitikul, made a 17th hole birdie to take a two-shot lead to the 18th hole, and Kim unleashed the shot of her life from the fairway to land the ball behind the flag, and watched as it rolled off a bank to within 30cm for would be a kick-in eagle putt. Thai star Thitikul, who missed the fairway, then laid up, put her third shot to 1.5m, leaving her a birdie putt to win. She missed, sending the year;s fourth major to a playoff, and Kim took control. Grace Kim isn't out of this one yet 🚨 She can make the eagle putt to tie — LPGA (@LPGA) July 13, 2025 Minjee Lee, who had the chance to launch into rare air with a fourth major championship having started the day one-shot off the lead, failed to get any real momentum, She was within one or two shots of the lead throughout the final round, before a bogey on the par five 15th snuffed out her chances. Fresh off her third major win two weeks ago at the PGA Championship, Lee rallied late, and a final hole eagle elevated her in to a tie for third after a closing three-under 68, just one shot behind the number needed to get in to the playoff. Gabi Ruffels, who started the day tied for the lead and in the final group with Lee, misfired early with an opening hole bogey and an inability to hit the fairways resulted in the 25-year-old fading from contention.

West Indies v Australia, third Test, day two - live coverage: Starc's late strike puts Australia on top

Mitchell Starc struck early in his 100th Test match as the West Indies reached 16 for one in response to Australia's first innings total of 225 on the opening day of the day/night third Test at Sabina Park in Jamaica. Dismissed for a 'duck' in an eventful final session as the tourists slipped from 157 for three, Starc bowled debutant Kevlon Anderson off the inside-edge to raise his tally of Test wickets to 396. King and captain Roston Chase will resume on the second day with the West Indies hoping that both Campbell and Louis will be fit to bat later in the innings as they seek a measure of consolation with the series already lost following defeats in the first two Tests in Barbados and Grenada.

Australia vs. West Indies third Test: Jayden Seales faces potential ban for ugly double send-off to Aussie batsmen

Don't miss out on the headlines from Cricket. Followed categories will be added to My News. West Indies fast bowler Jayden Seales is in line to receive a fresh sanction after a couple of fiery send-offs on day one of the third Test against Australia in Jamaica. Seales was given a caution by the on-field umpires after he screamed at Steve Smith after the vice-captain edged a Shamar Joseph delivery to second-slip. And later in the evening session, the 23-year-old was back at it again, screaming at skipper Pat Cummins after dismissing Mitchell Starc for a duck. Seales finished with figures of 3-59 from 16 overs but it may come at a cost, with the ICC likely not to look at his over the top send-offs too fondly. Seales was fined earlier this season after giving Cummins an almighty send-off on the opening day of the first Test. Jayden Seales could face sanctions for his double send-off. Image: Kayo As a result he was fined 15 per cent of his match fee. That's because send-offs are a thing of the past and are no longer within the rules. Article 2.5 of the ICC's code of conduct forbids 'using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon dismissal.' On the basis of that it would be highly likely the ICC could find on Sunday morning (AEDT) he broke that law again. For his last offence he copped a demerit point as well as his fan, bringing his total to two in the last 24-month period. If he cops a demerit point for each of his send offs in the third Test, he would receive a ban. That's because if a player accrues four demerit points in a 24-month period they receive a suspension. But speaking after stumps, Seales said he didn't direct his celebrations at opposition players. 'No send-off, that was pointed directly towards Alzarri. We had a conversation before the delivery. No send-offs,' Seales said. 'I'm not planning to get any fines or push the limits with the umpires anymore, so definitely not crossing that line.' But fans feel he may find himself in trouble. 'You just can't do it,' one wrote after Seales' first send-off of the day. 'Proper send-off for Steve Smith from Jayden Seales. Was jumping up & down yelling at Smith's face and the umpires pulled Seales aside for a chat immediately. They did have an exchange in the previous over too,' Bharat Sundaresan added on X. While a third wrote: 'Jayden Seales just giving everyone send offs todaywhat did the Aussies do to him lmao.' – with Fox Sports Originally published as West Indies quick Jayden Seales faces potential ban for double send-off of Aussie batsmen
