
WHOOP wants to slow time – and the Gulf is listening
'My name is Stephan Muller. I'm the Director for WHOOP in the Middle East,' he says. 'Unlocking human performance has always been in our DNA. It's something that's extremely important to us. But we're so pleased that we're now focusing additionally on healthspan.'
WHOOP tracks health, not just fitness
That shift has a name: WHOOP 5.0 and WHOOP MG. These aren't your average smartbands. They're built not just to track your workouts, but to act as mini-diagnostics labs on your wrist. 'We've come out with new hardware that includes things like heart screening, blood pressure insights, insights to your hormones and a few more other things that we can talk about,' says Muller.
It sounds clinical because it is. WHOOP MG is the company's first medical-grade wearable. Designed to surface insights typically reserved for hospital settings, it can monitor everything from cardiovascular strain to long-term hormonal health. The headline feature? WHOOP Age.
'It shows you the pace at which you're aging. For example, I'm 35. My WHOOP Age is currently 30, which is great. But it's also because I'm putting in the effort into working out, eating healthy, sleeping well, etc. That number can change very, very quickly depending on my lifestyle.'
Ageing, in this context, is not a passive process. It's a daily fluctuation. One day of sleep deprivation or poor eating habits can tilt the balance. WHOOP doesn't just track your health – it reflects back the cost of your lifestyle decisions in stark, sometimes uncomfortable terms.
'If I'm going through a stressful period, if I'm not eating well, if I'm having, you know, short nights of sleep, I will increase and accelerate my pace of aging very quickly. And it's measured by nine different metrics that we measure on ongoing basis at WHOOP,' says Muller.
This isn't just tech; it's behavioural psychology embedded in design. By creating a tight feedback loop between your actions and your health score, WHOOP turns wellness into a measurable, gamified discipline. And the company is reengineering its business model to support it. 'It was one membership option for everyone. Now we have three membership options. We want to make sure that we are as customised and personalised to the needs of our members,' Muller explains. 'We have One, Peak and Life.'
One gives you the fundamentals. It's targeted at those who want core performance data without the clinical detail. Peak offers more advanced performance insights, including recovery patterns, sleep cycles, and strain metrics. Life – the top tier – adds the hardware ridges that double as a 30-second heart screener. 'It's something that we found extremely important to include. And I'm actually wearing the top tier on this – you'll see these ridges here on the side. Effectively, what you do is you'll hold on to that for about 30 seconds when you have your WHOOP app open, and it'll give you your heart screener within that 30-second period.'
It doesn't stop there. Blood pressure readings are now continuous, provided you calibrate with three cuff-based measurements. That level of constant, passive monitoring is what elevates WHOOP from a lifestyle device to a preventative health tool. 'It gives you your estimated blood pressure on a consistent basis,' says Muller. 'One important thing to note, though is that in order to get the most accurate insights possible, you do need to provide three readings with the cuff. At first, you upload those insights onto the WHOOP app, and then from that moment onwards, it can accurately read your blood pressure on ongoing basis.'
In many ways, WHOOP reflects a broader shift in how people engage with healthcare: less reactive, more predictive. The platform isn't just used for peak performance anymore. It's targeting professionals, frequent travellers, parents – anyone whose life feels like an endurance sport. 'I think with our entry into healthspan and coming up with a medical-grade device, I think we're targeting a much broader audience. I think a lot more people are going to benefit from WHOOP that maybe weren't as attracted to it or as spoken to before.'
Gulf leads in wellness innovation
That broader audience is already emerging across the Gulf. From Saudi's AI hospitals to Dubai's biohacking clinics, the region is racing ahead of the global curve on health innovation.
The UAE alone has announced multiple national strategies tied to well-being, digital health, and AI-enabled diagnostics. WHOOP fits seamlessly into this narrative. Not just because of its hardware, but because of the mindset it represents: one where individuals take responsibility for their biology.
WHOOP is convinced that this mindset shift is permanent. And now, with a battery that lasts longer than ever, it's doubling down on that opportunity. 'It's a really exciting time for us. New fertility treatments offer hope in reversing declining birth rates
An Emirati woman has defied the odds by successfully giving birth to a healthy baby boy thanks to a scientific breakthrough, five years on from her first attempts at starting a family. Hussa, 42, was given a pioneering treatment of breast cancer drugs, repurposed to restore her uterus to optimum health, allowing her to conceive. When that was paired with a genetic test to ensure her eggs were in the best possible condition for fertilisation and a new technique removing them at a smaller growth stage than usual, Hussa and her husband Ahmed were told they had a successful pregnancy. The procedure at the Art Fertility Clinic in Abu Dhabi is the latest example of how personalised medical care is helping deliver the best possible outcome for patients. Fertility and birth rates around the world are on the slide due to economic, environmental and lifestyle factors. But with similar successes and new scientific discoveries, doctors hope that can be reversed to resolve the issue of declining populations. 'It's extremely important to realise that fertility is a very new field of medicine,' said Dr Human Fatema, a consultant in obstetrics, gynaecology and reproductive health at Art Fertility Clinics. 'IVF treatments have existed for only 45 years, whereas ophthalmologists, cardiologists and many other fields have been there for centuries. It means our knowledge is extremely poor and why research is important to go one step ahead. 'Now, we have reached the era of individualised medicine, it's not a one-size-fits-all approach any more. Every month, the endocrine profile of a woman differs, so the way you approach stimulating a woman for IVF is different.' Multiple techniques Hussa, who lives in Abu Dhabi, had been experiencing primary infertility for more than four years, with a history of endometriosis and severe adenomyosis, a condition where tissue that normally lines the uterus grows into its muscular wall. The couple underwent an intracytoplasmic sperm injection using frozen sperm from the Micro-TESE procedure, a technique that extracts sperm directly from the testes. The resulting embryos were subjected to preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy, which identified a single euploid embryo suitable for transfer. Then, a carefully designed five-month course of Decapeptyl 3.75 and Letrozole, two drugs used for breast cancer, was initiated, followed by a uterine wash and hormone replacement therapy. A first procedure took place during the pandemic, but when Hussa caught Covid-19, she lost the pregnancy. A second attempt proved a resounding success, with Hussa giving birth to a healthy baby boy five months ago. The couple now hope by revealing their struggles they can inspire others to not give up hope of starting a family. 'We used to operate on these type of cases, or suppress hormones with injections, but the success was very limited so we just tried to think a little bit out of the box,' said Dr Fatema. 'When we scanned Hussa's uterus, it was pushing against her lungs, which I have never seen before. We looked to combine these cancer drugs, plus the treatment of suppressing the hormones. 'After five months, the results were extraordinary and she had almost a completely normal uterus. If you see this kind of success, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Standard IVF doesn't exist any more.' In a world where fertility rates are steadily declining due to the fast-paced, high-stress lifestyles of modern couples, comprehensive, tailored approaches towards fertility are offering a viable path forward for hopeful parents. Plunging birth rates According to the UN's World Fertility Report 2024, the fertility rate in the UAE has dropped dramatically, from 3.76 live births per woman in 1994 to just 1.21 in 2024. It is a familiar pattern around the globe. Fertility rates in India have dropped from five to two births per woman since the 1970s, while in South Korea a total fertility rate of around six births per woman in the 1950s has plummeted to less than one in 2023. Dr Fatema said there were a number of contributing factors. 'The prevalence of infertility in the Gulf is significantly higher than what we see in the West,' he said. 'Key reasons are environmental and lifestyle. When you cover yourself, you have a lack of sun exposure, leading to a decline of vitamin D. 'This decreases the number of eggs, so women go earlier to menopause because they're fully covered and have no sun exposure. "Other factors are consanguinity and obesity. In married cousins, daughters have a reduced ovarian reserve and go earlier to menopause. 'Also, a lot of physicians do elective C-sections in this region, as they think this is the easy way to go, but those C-sections also reduce the receptivity of the uterus.' According to the Gulf Research Centre Foundation, fertility in Oman fell from six babies per woman, on average, in 1995 to four on 2016. In Saudi Arabia, the number fell from 3.6 in 2004 to 2.4 in 2016, and from 4.4 in 1997 to 3.2 in 2015 in Qatar. New parents Hussa and Ahmed, however, are looking forward to an exciting new future. 'I knew we would be happy if we had a child, I was on medication and I was suffering, despite that I always had hope,' said Hussa. 'Dr Fatema gave me that energy to come back after we had been trying for so long. I always wanted to get the feelings of being a mum and having a family of our own. I knew it would make our lives very different. It has made me happier. 'Family is a very important part of our culture. We need to have kids and actually we love a big family. But from my side, a small family is more than enough. 'If I could speak with any other couples who may be struggling, I would tell them to be patient, you will get good results eventually if you keep trying.'

Banc, Downtown Dubai's newest hotspot, has just launched a brand-new menu for reduced appetites due to weightloss injections like Ozempic, Mounjaro and Wegovy. Ever since the news went out, it's generated a lot of interest. Everyone's calling it the 'Ozempic menu.' Banc's founders give us the lowdown on the facts, benefits and potential flipside of this trend. 'Let's clear one thing up right away — this isn't an 'Ozempic menu'. We're not doctors, and we're certainly not here to prescribe trends. But what we are seeing, both in London and now in Dubai, is a change in how people are eating. Appetite-suppressing medications like GLP-1s — which are prescribed by professionals for specific medical reasons — have a clear side effect: people just aren't eating as much. We were getting more and more guests asking, 'Can I get a smaller portion of this?' Some would share a main or skip dessert entirely. And we thought, why not meet people halfway? So we created The Mini Bancer – a menu featuring smaller portions of our most-popular dishes and drinks. It's all about flavour, just in less volume,' starts off Mazlum Topcu, co-founder of The Banc, located in Dubai and London. The founders noticed that in London, the guests still wanted the experience of dining out, but they were choosing differently. Hence, the idea of a 'skinny jab menu'. 'The average spending per head dipped, and that has a direct impact on the bottomline. But rather than fight it, we decided to get creative – without compromising on quality or creativity. Rather than a full three-course meal, they will order a few lighter plates,' says co-founder Can Topcu. The Mini Bancer menu is not just for people on GLP-1s (Type 2 diabetics); Banc is looking at a wider audience. 'We're seeing athletes, professionals, even foodies who just want to enjoy greater variety without feeling stuffed. It's also great for people with lighter appetites – or those trying to make more mindful choices without missing out on the pleasure of dining out,' explains Mazlum. The 'skinny jab menu' is for those with smaller appetites but still want to dine out and eat good food. Can Topcu adds, 'And let's be honest, Dubai is a city that loves a good night out, but it also cares deeply about health and image. This kind of menu fits naturally into that lifestyle. It's not about diet culture. It's about choice, balance, and still indulging in your favourite dishes – just in a way that suits how you're feeling that day. Guests don't want to feel left out or embarrassed by leaving half their meal or telling the table they are not drinking because they are on medication, have an early morning workout, or have other commitments.' By catering to GLP-1 users and health-conscious diners, Banc's 'inclusive' menu could be a game-changer. But what are the potential advantages and disadvantages of the 'Ozempic menu'? Will some diners feel self-conscious about ordering from a menu specifically designed for those on weight-loss medications? 'We see this as a new era for hospitality. It challenges us to think beyond 'bigger is better'. A miniature beverage or baklava bite dessert, they still use the same premium ingredients and techniques — it's not a shortcut – and the price reflects the smaller size. It's thoughtful, it's elegant, and frankly, it's a lot more fun than just saying 'no' to dessert,' says Mazlum. 'The upside is simple: it's inclusive. Whether you're on a medical programme, watching your portion sizes, or cutting back on drinking, this menu gives people the option to dine how they want. It's respectful of changing appetites, changing drinking habits, and a broader wellness mindset,' adds Can. The founders also believe that serving smaller portions could reduce food waste, aligning with sustainable dining practices. 'It's taken some adjusting. Smaller serves mean we've had to be smarter with curation, but the result is still high-impact and high-value. Sure, a few have called it a gimmick, but you can't please everyone. Introducing something new is always a gamble, but responding to guest feedback isn't trend-chasing – it's just good hospitality,' he says. After doing a trial run at their London location, the concept has made its UAE debut this month, blending The Banc's signature Mediterranean flavours with a narrower, health-conscious approach to dining. Terming their new menu as 'The Mini Bancer', this is a thoughtfully designed section of the menu, offering lighter, more intentional versions of the restaurant's most popular dishes and beverages. 'I think we're just trying to be honest with where people are right now. The way people eat is changing. Their habits, their appetites, their beverage choices – all of it. And as restaurateurs, we either adapt or get left behind. This isn't about Ozempic. It's about flexibility. Hospitality should never be one-size-fits-all,' explains Mazlum. Banc plans to tap into the UAE's growing market of health-conscious foodies who want nutritious and tasty options. 'We're deeply invested in Dubai, but the UAE has so many exciting markets. The feedback here has been incredible, and we're exploring opportunities to grow organically, without losing what makes The Banc special,' Can concludes.

UAE: For heart attack recovery, check for anxiety, depression symptoms, say doctors
When someone survives a heart attack, the immediate focus tends to be on the physical crisis, the blocked artery, the stent, and the electrocardiogram (ECG). But experts say it's not just about the artery; it's about more than heart health. Recovery extends beyond repairing the heart muscle. It often involves navigating a wave of emotional aftershocks: fear, anxiety, vulnerability, and sometimes a profound identity crisis. Doctors emphasize that healing is not a linear path — it's a complex and ongoing journey that affects the mind, emotions, and relationships. Empathy helps healing 'Healing the heart involves far more than restoring blood flow. It also means helping patients deal with fear, anxiety, and often a profound sense of vulnerability,' said Dr Shady Habboush, Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at Saudi German Hospital, Dubai. Dr Habboush believes that effective healing starts with listening. Many patients don't volunteer that they feel anxious or depressed — unless someone asks. 'Simple screening tools like the PHQ‑2 for depression or GAD‑7 for anxiety during follow-up visits or cardiac rehab can be used. But beyond the forms, paying attention to what they're not saying — silence, hesitation, or the subtle shift in tone when they talk about the future — these are all emotional red flags," Dr Habboush said. A team effort toward recovery Emotional support plays a critical role in the healing process. Dr Habboush encourages involving family members as much as possible — both for educational purposes and for day-to-day motivation. 'A supportive spouse, a caring son or daughter — these people are often the ones making meals, managing medications, or encouraging walks when motivation is low," he said. Experts advised not to wait until signs of more profound emotional distress emerge. 'It's recommended that doctors refer patients to mental health professionals or cardiac support groups. Suppose they see signs of clinical depression, anxiety, or fear of recurrence. In that case, it's better not to hesitate to involve a psychologist,' he added. The invisible wound Dr Rahul Chaudhary, Interventional Cardiologist and Head of Department at International Modern Hospital Dubai, speaks of what he calls 'the invisible wound'. 'There's the anxiety that lingers long after the ECG normalizes. Some patients avoid physical activity entirely, fearing it might 'trigger' another attack. Others downplay their condition and resist follow-up, as if acknowledging the disease gives it power," Dr Chaudhary said. He explained that patients who were previously healthy and active may struggle to come to terms with their new reality. 'Suddenly, they go from being a provider, a leader, or an active individual to someone who feels fragile and uncertain.' For these individuals, lifestyle changes can feel overwhelming. 'One-size-fits-all advice rarely works. We have to acknowledge that lifestyle changes after a heart attack aren't minor tweaks — they are, for many, a full paradigm shift. People are often overwhelmed because they're given a list: stop smoking, walk more, take five medications, avoid stress, eat differently — all while processing a life-threatening event," he said. Essentials of recovery Dr Srinivasan Kandasamy, Specialist Cardiologist at Aster Hospital Qusais, outlines the core changes that must be made in the aftermath of a heart attack. 'Following a heart attack, the most critical lifestyle changes include quitting smoking, adopting a heart-healthy diet, engaging in regular physical activity, and maintaining a healthy weight — all while adhering strictly to prescribed medications.' He advised that most patients should avoid strenuous activity for four to six weeks. However, many can resume their regular daily routines within one to two weeks, depending on their recovery. When it comes to diet and exercise, he recommends a balanced, sustainable approach: "Diet recommendations focus on whole grains, lean proteins, healthy fats such as those found in nuts and PUFA oils, and minimizing sugary foods and beverages. Regular aerobic exercise — like brisk walking for 30 to 40 minutes, three to four times a week — is encouraged.' For smoking cessation, Dr Kandasamy emphasizes behavioural strategies, medication when needed, and identifying personal triggers. Long-term adherence, he says, depends on consistency, education, and support. 'Cardiac rehabilitation programs help assess and individualize a patient's functional capacity. They enhance cardiovascular fitness, provide psychological support, and help modify cardiac risk factors. While not mandatory for all, these programmes are highly recommended for most patients," he said.
