UAE to UN: Mere containment of Gaza conflict no longer acceptable

TAG 91.1a day ago
At a high-level United Nations conference, the UAE declared that after 21 months of Israel's war on Gaza, merely containing the conflict was no longer acceptable and that it was time to address "its root causes".
In a session led by Saudi Arabia and France, the UAE issued a strong call for urgent international action to end the ongoing violence and secure a lasting peace through a two-state solution.
Speaking on behalf of the UAE, Minister of State Khalifa Shaheen Al Marar highlighted the growing international consensus in favor of resolving the Palestinian-Israeli conflict through the two-state framework, pointing to recent announcements by France and the UK as key momentum-builders.
The translator for Al Marar stated as follows:
Al Marar stressed that while the path to peace remains critical, it must not distract from the urgent humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza and the escalating violence in the West Bank, including actions by Israeli settlers and extremist groups targeting Palestinian communities.
'The humanitarian situation in Gaza has reached an unprecedented critical stage that requires everyone to stand together to stop this catastrophe,' he said.
In response, the UAE has ramped up its aid operations, delivering relief by land, air and sea, including aerial drops into Gaza and pledged to continue these efforts. But aid alone, Al Marar emphasized, is not enough.
The UAE called for an immediate ceasefire, the release of hostages and prisoners, and a renewed international push to stop the war and create conditions for long-term peace.
To achieve this, the UAE outlined four key pillars.
First, the need to support a serious, UN-sponsored negotiation process, reaffirming that a two-state solution is the only realistic path forward.
Second, to establish a timeline and irreversible plan for a sovereign Palestinian state, living side by side in peace and security with Israel.
Third, to ensure a strong and capable Palestinian authority that upholds the rule of law, security and stability and is committed to combating extremism.
Finally, to coordinate efforts to counter terrorism, break cycles of violence and support development, prosperity and peaceful coexistence across the region.
Concluding his remarks, Al Marar warned that every day without progress widens the gap to peace, but affirmed that the groundwork laid by this conference offers a clear path forward.
'All we need now is the political courage to move towards peace as the optimal strategic option,' he said.
After 21 months since the start of Israel's war on the Gaza Strip, it is time to move from mere attempts to contain the conflict to addressing its root causes.

Opinion: Starmer's dangerous message: Palestinians can only have their basic rights if Israel allows it

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer's announcement on Tuesday that the UK intends to recognise a Palestinian state by September presents itself as a significant diplomatic shift. However, a closer examination reveals this to be a conditional statement, not a genuine step towards justice or an end to the brutal realities in Gaza and the Occupied West Bank. This move risks functioning as a distraction, obscuring the UK's complicity and absolving it of its historical and legal responsibilities. While Gaza's civilians starve under siege, the UK government dangles a conditional promise of statehood. Israel's assault on Gaza has been catastrophic, with over 60,000 Palestinians killed since October 2023, and the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (Unrwa) stating the starvation of the people of Gaza is "manufactured and man-made". There is, for all to see, a genocide unfolding. Yet, Starmer's response has been to pledge recognition of Palestine only if Israel first meets an extensive checklist: a ceasefire, unimpeded aid deliveries, a halt to West Bank annexations, and more. US sanctions Palestinian officials over ICJ and ICC cases

The United States said on Thursday that it was placing sanctions on officials in the Palestinian Authority (PA) and Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) over their work taking Israel to international courts. According to the State Department, the unnamed officials were 'not complying with their commitments and undermining the prospects for peace'. It cited 'initiating and supporting actions at international organizations' and 'taking actions to internationalize its conflict with Israel such as through the International Criminal Court (ICC) and International Court of Justice (ICJ)'. Washington accused the figures of violating the PLO Commitments Compliance Act of 1989 (PLOCCA) and the Middle East Peace Commitments Act of 2002 (MEPCA). Since the war on Gaza began in October 2023, Israel has found itself diplomatically isolated as a result of atrocities committed against Palestinians in Gaza and its occupation of the West Bank and East Jerusalem. The former was filed by South Africa and is backed by several other states, and the latter is a result of a UN General Assembly resolution from 2022, calling for the ICJ to issue an advisory opinion on the legality of the occupation. At the ICC, prosecutors have issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former minister of defence, Yoav Gallant, for crimes against humanity and war crimes. The US had previously sanctioned ICC prosecutor Karim Khan and had threatened Palestinian officials with sanctions for their role in using international law to bring Israel to account. Washington's manoeuvre against the PA comes as momentum builds in the international community for recognition of a Palestinian state. France has already announced that it will recognise the state of Palestine at the upcoming UN General Assembly, while Canada and the UK have announced they will also recognise the state under conditions that leave the countries diplomatic space to backtrack.
