Charlotte Douglas was sixth busiest airport in the world in 2024: Rankings

Yahoo14-04-2025

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Charlotte now has the sixth busiest airport in the world in the latest Airports Council International rankings.
The ACI's 2024 preliminary ranking lists Charlotte Douglas International as sixth for aircraft operations, up from seventh a year ago, and seventh in North America for total passenger volume, a two-spot jump. The ranking has the airport at 23rd globally for passenger traffic, with final rankings to be released later this year.
Charlotte Douglas leaders explain why they're expecting drop in spring break travel
'This ranking reflects CLT's operational strength, the power of the American Airlines hub, and the dedication of our employees, airlines and terminal partners,' said CLT Chief Executive Officer Haley Gentry. 'Record-breaking traffic in 2024 made it an 'all in' year, and our team rose to the challenge. We're proud to be among the world's top airports and remain focused on building for the future.'
CLT says its sixth-place position for takeoffs and landings reflects an 11% increase in aircraft operations, rising from 539,066 in 2023 to 596,583 in 2024. The total exceeded global hubs Los Angeles International (LAX), Shanghai Pudong (PVG), Istanbul (IST) and Guangzhou (CAN).
Maintaining its record-breaking momentum, CLT set its all-time passenger record for the fifth time in eight years, welcoming 58.8 million travelers in 2024 — a 10% uptick from the previous record of 53.4 million in 2023.
International travel experienced a 13% surge, rising from 2.1 million passengers in 2023 to 2.4 million in 2024. Charlotte currently serves 42 international destinations and is home to three foreign flag carriers.
In 2025, CLT continues work on its Destination CLT terminal projects. Construction on the Terminal Lobby Expansion is slated for completion later this year. The project added 175,000 square feet of new space and renovates 191,000 square feet of existing space. Transportation Security Administration Checkpoint 2 opened March 24, completing the Airport's transition from five lettered checkpoints to three numbered ones.
A fourth parallel runway also is under construction at the airport.

Andy Nilsson files to challenge incumbent Senator Thom Tillis in 2026 midterms

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — The midterm elections are more than a year away, but candidates are already jockeying for a position. Retired Winston-Salem businessman Andy Nilsson has filed to challenge incumbent Senator Thom Tillis. 'We've got someone who, when he's voting, votes against the president, and doesn't really show up here to explain why or defend himself, it's like we've got a senator who's absent,' Nilsson told Queen City News. Nilsson spoke with Chief Political Correspondent Andy Weber in Greensboro Friday as the state GOP gathered for their annual convention. The odds are against the Republican challenger, as Tillis has already raised several million dollars and brought on staff with ties to the Trump presidential campaign. 'I knew getting into this, that was a big mountain to climb. I knew how big it was. I mean, this is a guy who's been in for 12 years, who's running for 18. He's got a lot of money, he's got a lot of PAC support, but that goes to the center of my argument, that he's out of touch,' insisted Nilsson. Nilsson argued not only is he a better choice over Tillis, but that he also is the right person to face a potential democratic nominee and former North Carolina Governor, Roy Cooper. 'I'm not a typical politician. Everybody that Roy Cooper has run against in however many elections that he run has been a typical, recycled, swamp-dwelling politician, I'm not. I was 30 years in business until I retired and started coaching high school football, now I'm working with special needs kids, that's what I do.' Cooper himself has not announced if he will run. Senator Tillis' campaign did not respond to a request for comment on Nilsson's campaign. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
