Airline to add direct flights from Charlotte to UAE on plane that will be unique to CLT
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A new airline will provide Charlotte passengers service to the United Arab Emirates. Charlotte Douglas International officials announced Friday that Etihad Airways is scheduled to join the airport next May as its fourth international carrier, but first with direct service to the city of Abu Dhabi and the Persian Gulf region. Real ID enforcement takes off Wednesday at Charlotte airport and across Carolinas The airline says the new route will operate four times per week on Etihad's flagship Boeing 787 Dreamliner. The 303-seat plane will offer business and economy cabins, with connections across the Middle East, the Indian Subcontinent and Asia. This will mark the first scheduled service by this style of Boeing aircraft in CLT history. 'Etihad's arrival is a milestone for CLT as we continue expanding our global reach,' said Haley Gentry, CEO of Charlotte Douglas. 'This new route opens the door to the Middle East and beyond, providing our passengers with greater access to international destinations and strengthening Charlotte's role as a key gateway for global travel.' Passengers will also benefit from U.S. Customs Preclearance in Abu Dhabi, allowing them to arrive in Charlotte as domestic travelers for a seamless entry. CLT officials say international travel in Charlotte has grown substantially in recent years. In 2024, the airport reportedly saw a 13% rise in international passenger traffic, increasing from 2.1 million in 2023 to 2.4 million. CLT holding off on popular screening system
CLEAR fans are going to have to wait a little longer before the popular facial recognition security screening system makes it to Charlotte Douglas International Airport. Last summer, a spokesperson at CLEAR parent Clear Secure Inc. (NYSE: YOU) told CBJ the company was interested in adding its biometric screening at CLT. ALSO READ: Airline makes sweeping cuts here At the time, the airport said that wrapping up an ongoing, $600 million renovation and expansion of the main lobby was a priority before exploring third-party security vendors such as CLEAR. Charlotte Douglas was sixth busiest airport in the world in 2024: Rankings
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Charlotte now has the sixth busiest airport in the world in the latest Airports Council International rankings. The ACI's 2024 preliminary ranking lists Charlotte Douglas International as sixth for aircraft operations, up from seventh a year ago, and seventh in North America for total passenger volume, a two-spot jump. The ranking has the airport at 23rd globally for passenger traffic, with final rankings to be released later this year. Charlotte Douglas leaders explain why they're expecting drop in spring break travel 'This ranking reflects CLT's operational strength, the power of the American Airlines hub, and the dedication of our employees, airlines and terminal partners,' said CLT Chief Executive Officer Haley Gentry. 'Record-breaking traffic in 2024 made it an 'all in' year, and our team rose to the challenge. We're proud to be among the world's top airports and remain focused on building for the future.' CLT says its sixth-place position for takeoffs and landings reflects an 11% increase in aircraft operations, rising from 539,066 in 2023 to 596,583 in 2024. The total exceeded global hubs Los Angeles International (LAX), Shanghai Pudong (PVG), Istanbul (IST) and Guangzhou (CAN). Maintaining its record-breaking momentum, CLT set its all-time passenger record for the fifth time in eight years, welcoming 58.8 million travelers in 2024 — a 10% uptick from the previous record of 53.4 million in 2023. International travel experienced a 13% surge, rising from 2.1 million passengers in 2023 to 2.4 million in 2024. Charlotte currently serves 42 international destinations and is home to three foreign flag carriers. In 2025, CLT continues work on its Destination CLT terminal projects. Construction on the Terminal Lobby Expansion is slated for completion later this year. The project added 175,000 square feet of new space and renovates 191,000 square feet of existing space. Transportation Security Administration Checkpoint 2 opened March 24, completing the Airport's transition from five lettered checkpoints to three numbered ones.
