UPSI bus tragedy probe still in early stage
KUALA LUMPUR: The investigation into the tragic bus crash that claimed 15 lives at KM53 of the East-West Highway near Tasik Banding, Gerik, early yesterday morning is still in its early stages, said Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay.
He said it was premature to draw any conclusions as the investigation is still ongoing.
'It's still too early to disclose any findings. The investigation is progressing and updates will be provided in due time. Yesterday, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husein, Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Shamsul Anuar Nasarah, and Perak police chief Datuk Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri issued statements regarding the case,' he told reporters.
Ayob Khan said this after officiating the 41st Annual General Meeting of the Retired Senior Police Officers Association of Malaysia (Respa), which was also attended by its chairman, Datuk Meor Chek Hussein Mahayuddin.
In the early morning crash, 15 students from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) were killed and 33 others injured when their bus overturned.
The chartered bus, carrying the students from Jertih, Terengganu, had departed at 9 pm on Sunday and was heading to the university's campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak, when the accident occurred.

MELAKA, June 14 — A post-mortem has confirmed that a mother and her eldest son were fatally stabbed in the chest and back, in an incident where the suspect is believed to be the woman's second son, aged 17. The teenager has been remanded for seven days until June 19 by Magistrate N. Gunmen on motorcycle open fire in Brickfields restaurant, killing one, injuring two
KUALA LUMPUR, June 14 — A man died while two of his friends were injured after being shot at a restaurant in Jalan Tun Sambanthan, Brickfields here, last night. Brickfields district police chief ACP Ku Mashariman Ku Mahmood said in the incident at about 10.50 pm, the three local men aged between 30 and 50 were eating with several friends before being approached by two men on a motorcycle who fired several shots at them. 'One of the victims was confirmed dead at the scene due to gunshots and his body was sent to the University Malaya Medical Centre (PPUM) for a post-mortem. 'Two other victims are receiving treatment at PPUM with one of them suffering serious injuries while the other sustained minor injuries,' he told reporters at the scene early this morning. Ku Mashariman said further investigations are underway including examining closed-circuit camera footage, identifying the motive for the incident and the suspects involved. 'There is nothing to alarm the public at this time and the police will investigate this case from various angles. 'Members of the public with information about the incident are advised to contact the police or the nearest police station to assist in the investigation,' he said, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code. — Bernama

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said the investigation will explore the possibility that the trio may have been deceived or exploited by an international syndicate. He said the Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) is currently reviewing information obtained from interrogations conducted by Laotian authorities. "The investigation will cover various angles, including the possibility that they were used as drug mules or were involved with a syndicate," said the nation's top cop when contacted today. The three men, aged between 25 and 29, were arrested at Wattay International Airport, Vientiane, on May 27 after a check of six luggage pieces belonging to them revealed 103 plastic packages containing 86 kilogrammes of marijuana. Razarudin said the suspects were believed to be planning to board a Thai Airways flight to Germany to deliver the drugs. The trio is currently held in Vientiane's Phontong Prison. "Checks with the Malaysian Immigration Department revealed that they departed from Kuala Lumpur International Airport on May 22. However, information from Thai authorities indicates there is no record of their entry into or exit from Thailand," he said. He added that the authorities will continue to cooperate with foreign enforcement agencies to identify the syndicate networks that may be involved, in addition to ensuring consular protection for the three Malaysians involved. Meanwhile, regarding the preliminary report on the accident involving Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) personnel in Teluk Intan, Perak, on May 13, Razarudin said a committee had been formed to review several recommendations aimed at enhancing the safety features of vehicles used by personnel on duty. He added that these include safer seating arrangements and the necessity to fully separate the passenger and cargo compartments, particularly during travel to operational sites rather than during operations themselves.
