Civil servant fined RM7,000 for taking bribe
SHAH ALAM: A civil servant has been fined RM7,000 by the Sessions Court here after pleading guilty to taking a bribe from an individual as inducement to certify a payment.
Mohd Khairul Jamil, 45, a commander with the Special Malaysia Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (SMART), admitted Tuesday (May 13) to receiving the bribe from the 35-year-old individual.
The offence was committed at a restaurant in Taman Putra Prima, Puchong at 11.33pm on May 5.
He was charged under Section 165 of the Penal Code, which provides for a prison sentence of up to two years or a fine or both, if convicted.
According to the charge sheet, the inducement was received by Khairul to carry out an act related to his official duties as a SMART commander.
In this case, he was accused of certifying payment for the supply of wood to be used in shoring training for SMART.
Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) DPP Asmaa' Zamri prosecuted while Khairul was unrepresented.
Judge Mohd Nasir Nordin imposed the fine in default six months' jail.

KUANTAN: A retired nurse lost more than RM111,000 after falling victim to a phone scam involving individuals impersonating police officers and personnel from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). Pahang police chief Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman said the 72-year-old victim received a call on May 29 from an individual claiming to be a representative of the MCMC. The caller alleged that a money laundering suspect had deposited RM210,000 into her bank account. The call was then transferred to another individual posing as 'Inspector Zamri' from the Pahang contingent police headquarters, who instructed the victim to surrender all her bank cards and warned her not to inform anyone about the matter. "The victim, as instructed, placed her bank card complete with the PIN, in a package outside her house for a purported police officer from the Bentong district police headquarters to collect,' he said in a statement on Thursday (June 5). He added that the victim realised she had been scammed after checking her bank account and discovering that her savings of RM111,044.64 had been withdrawn. Yahaya advised members of the public who receive suspicious calls to immediately verify the information with the police or relevant government agencies to avoid falling victim to fraud. [UPDATED] Eight UMT students charged with assaulting fellow student causing serious injury
KUALA TERENGGANU: Eight Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) students pleaded not guilty at the magistrate's court here today to a charge of causing grievous injuries to a fellow student last year. The accused, all male and aged between 21 and 23, made the plea after the charge was read by the court interpreter before Magistrate Iffah Nabihah Mohd Ishak. According to the charge, all eight students were alleged to have intentionally caused grievous hurt to the 21-year-old victim. They were charged with committing the offence at a college in UMT's Kuala Nerus branch between 1.30am and 5am on December 15 last year. The charge was framed under Section 325 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing grievous hurt, which carries a maximum sentence of seven years' imprisonment and a fine upon conviction. The court set July 6 for mention and granted bail of RM5,000 to all the accused. Deputy public prosecutors Azizan Abdullah, Nur Nabihah Hanin Ayim, and Nur Aisyah Mohamad prosecuted the case. All the accused were represented by lawyers from the National Legal Aid Foundation. It was previously reported that police arrested 12 students from a public higher education institute in the state who were believed to be involved in a group assault at a residential college.

Fishing too close to shore: Vessel and crew seized Kota Kinabalu: A fishing vessel operating too close to shore was seized for breaching maritime regulations, along with its catch of almost a tonne. Sabah Maritime Director First Adm Mohd Khairulanuar Abd Majid @ Razali said its captain and five crew members, all Indonesians, were also detained by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA). 'Our team went to investigate and found that the vessel was fishing just about one nautical mile (1.85km) from shore, which is illegal,' he said, Wednesday.
